Boston University says graduate student killed in marathon blast

BOSTON (Reuters) - The third of the three people killed in Monday's Boston Marathon bomb blasts was a Boston University graduate student, the university said on Tuesday.

University spokesman Colin Riley declined to provide the student's name or other identifying details.

The other two victims killed in the back-to-back blasts near the finish line of the storied distance race were Martin Richard, 8, and Krystle Campbell, 29, both from the Boston area. More than 170 other people were hurt by the two explosions.

Reid: Letter with ricin or poison sent to senator
4/16/13

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says a letter containing ricin or another poision was sent to the office of Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi.

In brief remarks to reporters in the Capitol, Reid did not say when the letter was sent. It's customary for mail addressed to congressional offices to be screened at an off-site facility.

Sen. Mary Landrieu also confirmed a letter containing poison had been to a sent to a senator. She said lawmakers were informed of the fact at a closed-door briefing about the Boston Marathon bombings.

Letter sent to Obama tests positive for ricin, officials say

A letter addressed to President Barack Obama tested positive for the poison ricin and was from the same sender who mailed a letter to a senator that also tested positive, officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

The letter to Obama was intercepted at an off-site White House mail facility and was being tested further, the FBI said. A federal law enforcement official said that the letter was “very similar” to one addressed to Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss.

Federal officials told NBC News that they believe they know who sent the letters, but no arrest was made because authorities were waiting for further test results.

Ricin is made from castor beans and can kill within 36 hours. There is no antidote. Some threatening letters simply contain ground castor beans, resulting in a positive field test for ricin without the concentrated poison. Results from full laboratory tests are expected in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Filters at a second government mail screening facility also tested positive for ricin in preliminary screening Wednesday.

An FBI official told NBC News that the agency did not initially believe the letters were related to the attack on the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Authorities cleared the atrium of a Senate office building Wednesday and were investigating a suspicious package there. Capitol police were also investigating a suspicious package at the office of Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala. Shelby’s staff had not been evacuated.

The Wicker letter was postmarked Memphis, Tenn., and had no return address. The FBI confirmed the preliminary positive test on it Tuesday. That letter was intercepted at a postal facility in Maryland that screens mail sent to Congress, and never reached Wicker’s office.

Other senators were made aware of the Wicker letter during a briefing Tuesday evening on the bombing in Boston. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said that the person who sent Wicker the letter writes often to elected officials.

People can be exposed to ricin by touching a ricin-laced letter or by inhaling particles that enter the air when the envelope is opened. Touching ricin can cause a rash but is not usually fatal. Inhaling it can cause trouble breathing, fever and other symptoms, and can be fatal.

Field tests are conducted anytime suspicious powder is found in a mail facility, and the FBI cautioned that field tests and other preliminary tests can produce inconsistent results. When tests show the possibility of a biological agent, the material is sent to a laboratory for full analysis.

Boston Marathon investigation: FBI may have suspect, CNN reports

Authorities may have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, CNN reports.

The FBI is holding a press conference at 5:00 p.m. and may announce the news then. CNN attributed the news to an unnamed source, and reported that the breakthrough in the investigation came from analyzing department store surveillance video and video from a news station.

The Boston Globe reported that officials have found an image of "a suspect carrying, and perhaps dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene."

An FBI spokesman in Boston declined to comment on the reports to Yahoo News.

MORE Propaganda...

http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/boston-marathon-explosion-photo-of-terrified-child-puts-time-magazine-in-spotlight-161645169.html
Boston Marathon Explosion Photo of Terrified Child Puts Time Magazine in Spotlight
4/17/13

Time magazine, no stranger to controversial cover photos, has just released a Boston Marathon explosion doozy: A close-up image of a terrorized, redheaded boy of about 3, blood smeared into his hair, being held by an police officer in the immediate aftermath of Monday’s attack, under the headline “Tragedy in Boston.” It’s the cover shot of a special tablet-only issue, to be published Thursday, which Time previewed online on Wednesday. (See photo, which may be disturbing to some viewers, at the bottom of this post.)

Though the image manages to movingly convey the emotions of the moment without being as graphic as some other images we've seen, public reaction to it, perhaps because its subject is a child, has so far been mixed.

Many in the Twitterverse have reacted with comments like, “Heartbreaking,” or “unbelievable and moving,” but others were not impressed.

“Disgusting. Giving the bad guys what they want. Idiots,” tweeted one critic. “Media taking it too far,” wrote another
.

Reader comments on the Time preview mostly gave praise to the photograph, as well as the handful of others previewed in a slide show, though some voiced concern. "These images should not be published," wrote one. Another offered a more cynical view, "Let's all thank the media...whose ratings go sky high with tragedy...do they really care or is it just $$ to them."

The photos, by Boston-based freelancer Bill Hoenk, may be the only ones that record the scene following the second blast, Time notes in its preview. “I was horrified by what I was seeing, but there was some sort of instinct that said, don’t worry about that, just keep shooting, because you’re the only person with a camera around that I could see and it needs to be done,” he said. “So I kept shooting.”

Hoenk, Time reports, was using a telephoto lens at the time of the blast, so he had to “move back quite a ways” to capture the full scene of the policeman carrying the child away. “I saw the cop lift up the baby,” he said. “When I look at the photos, I cry. The baby was screaming.”

Just seconds after capturing the image, Hoenk said, the police started “frantically screaming for people to leave” the scene, worried about the chances of a third explosion. “That’s when I decided that I didn’t want to be there anymore.”

I, for one, am glad that he was there at all, and find any outrage about the image confusing. Was Nick Ut’s Pulitzer Prize winning photo of the naked 9-year-old Vietnamese girl running from the napalm attack on her village too over-the-top? What about the famous 1943 shot of the Warsaw ghetto, in which a boy of about 10 is shown, hands in the air, after being pulled out of dugouts by Nazis?

Tragedies and disasters and terrorist attacks, as we all know too well by this point, happen. And they often affect children. And telling honest, accurate stories through the use of candid photos is simply good, moving journalism.

At least in my humble opinion. What’s yours?

Here's the photo, from Time:

Suspect to be taken into custody, brought to court, AP reports

Image shows suspect carrying, perhaps dropping, black bag

An official briefed on the Boston Marathon bombing investigation said today that authorities have an image of a suspect carrying, and perhaps dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene on Boylston Street, outside of the Forum restaurant.

Investigators are “very close” in the investigation, said the official, who declined to be named.

That official said authorities may publicize their finding as early as this afternoon.

The same official also said a surveillance camera at Lord & Taylor, located directly across the street, has provided clear video of the area, though it was unclear whether the image of the suspect was taken from that camera.

Authorities planned to brief the media on the progress of the investigation at 5 p.m. today.

“The camera from Lord & Taylor is the best source of video so far,” said Dot Joyce, a spokeswoman for Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “All I know is that they are making progress.”

Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis said shortly before noon after leaving FBI headquarters that investigators were “working hard and there’s a lot going on,” but he had no comment on whether progress had been made. No arrests were reported this morning.

The Associated Press reported this afternoon that an arrest was “imminent” in the bombing case, citing a law enforcement source. The suspect was to be brought to court, the news service reported.

Authorities had appealed to the public for video and photographs of the area near the bombing scene at the finish line of the marathon, noting that many people among the crowd were likely to have taken photos of the conclusion of the world-renowned event.

Two bombs exploded within seconds of each other at 2:50 p.m. Monday near the Boylston Street finish line, killing three people and injuring 176, many of whom suffered major trauma from flying shrapnel, including nails and ball bearings that authorities have said were stuffed into the explosive devices by their makers.

A massive investigation is underway, involving local, state, and federal law enforcement, and officials have promised to go to the “ends of the earth” to find the culprit or culprits.

A spokesman for President Obama said at a Washington media briefing that the president would bring a message of “resolve” and “commonality” when he travels to the city Thursday for an interfaith service at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.

“The way that the people of Boston and the city of Boston responded reminds us — and reminds the world — of just who we are as a people,” Jay Carney said in a media briefing in Washington, where he was also questioned about poisoned letters sent to the president and a senator.

Asked whether the letters and the bombs were considered linked, Carney deferred to an FBI statement that said there was no indication of a connection.

The bombings killed Martin Richard, 8, of Dorchester; Krystle Campbell, 29, of Arlington, and Boston University graduate student Lingzu Lu, a native of Shenyang, China, who was in her 20s.

The Globe reported today that investigators had found evidence that timing devices were used to detonate the bombs. Working at the city’s largest-ever crime scene, investigators also determined that bombs were probably fashioned from 6-liter pressure cookers, filled with nails and small ball bearings, like buckshot, to increase the carnage, and then hidden in black nylon bags or backpacks and left on the ground.

CNN and the Associated Press reported this morning that the lid of one of the pressure cookers was located on the rooftop of a nearby building.

FBI bomb experts at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., will try to rebuild the devices from fragments that include a circuit board that indicated the bombs were detonated on a timer, rather than remote control.

The FBI, which is leading the investigation into the bombing, had asked the public for tips on anyone who may have been lugging a heavy black bag near the finish line.

Authorities arrest suspect in Boston bombings, source says

Authorities arrested a suspect Wednesday in the fatal bombings at the Boston Marathon, a federal law enforcement source told CNN's Fran Townsend.

Details about the suspect's identity and motive were not immediately available. News of the arrest was first reported by CNN.

Investigators identified the suspect based on two videos taken before Monday's attack, the federal law enforcement source told Townsend.

One of the videos was surveillance footage taken at the nearby Lord & Taylor department store, the other was shot by a Boston television station, a source who has has been briefed on the investigation exclusively told CNN's John King.

The development came after a chaotic day in which investigators revealed more details about the makeup of the bombs and apparently unrelated scares over letters containing ricin gripped the nation's capital.

Boston Marathon investigation: FBI has suspect, authorities say no arrest has been made

Authorities have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings and denied news reports that an arrest had been made in the attack.

The Associated Press and the Boston Globe reported a suspect had been arrested and was en route to the Moakley Federal Courthouse in South Boston. But the Boston Police Department and the US Attorney's office in Boston denied those reports on Wednesday afternoon, saying no arrest had been made. CNN also reported no suspect was in custody, backtracking from its earlier report that a suspect had been nabbed.

Authorities combed through video footage to find an image of "a suspect carrying, and perhaps dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene" The Boston Globe reported. CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reported that the video showed a man in a black jacket talking on his cell phone "placing a black bag at the second bomb site outside of the Forum restaurant on Boylston Street and then leaving the area before that explosion." Police used the time stamp on the video to scan all the calls made in the area and track him down.

The FBI is holding a press conference at 5 p.m. and is expected to announce the news then. CNN reported that the breakthrough in the investigation came from analyzing department store surveillance video and video from a news station.

An FBI spokesman in Boston and a spokeswoman for Boston Mayor Tom Menino declined to comment on the reports to Yahoo News.

Security officers order staff, media to clear Boston courthouse

BOSTON (Reuters) - Security officials on Wednesday ordered staff, media and attorneys to evacuate Boston's federal courthouse, according to a Reuters reporter on the scene. Scores of people could be seen leaving the building. No further details were immediately available. "Get away from the building. I can't stress this enough, people," a uniformed law enforcement official yelled at the crowd.

Authorities seek man seen leaving bag near Boston blast site

Authorities investigating the Boston Marathon bombing said Wednesday they have the face but not the name of someone seen on video leaving a black bag near the scene of the blasts.

The person was seen on a surveillance camera from a Lord & Taylor department store, one official said.

The FBI, Boston police, the U.S. attorney in Boston, a senior White House official and other NBC News sources all said there had not been an arrest. The statements came after several media outlets reported an arrest in the case.

“Despite reports to the contrary there has not been an arrest in the Marathon attack,” Boston police said from an official Twitter account.

Hard to separate journalist that are trying to get a jump on a story from somebody revealing something on purpose. Was the claim of an arrest simply zealous reporters, or did somebody leak something?  Roll Eyes

This caught my eye...

What bonafide terrorist would use a cellphone that could be linked back to them? Are they serious? Sorry, that's just stupid on the "suspect's" part, IF the claim is even true. I really don't think any person with half a brain would use a phone like that. Who doesn't know calls and GPS on cellphones can be traced? That leaves the question what type person WOULD use a traceable cell phone? I'd venture to say somebody that is using a traceable phone on purpose.

You just cannot trust what the media serves up, being so filled with lies and deception.

Interfaith prayer service to honor victims of Marathon bombing begins at 11 a.m. Thursday

An interfaith prayer service to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Washington Street in Boston’s South End.

President Obama and Michelle Obama will attend the service, called “Healing Our City.”

“The point is to offer hope to people and to come together as a community,” said the Rev. Liz Walker of Roxbury Presbyterian Church, who will help lead the service.

Invited guests will include victims’ families, first responders, medical personnel, government officials, business leaders, and others.

Members of the public who wish to attend will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors to the cathedral will open at 8 a.m. Those attending should use the entrance at Washington Street and Monsignor Reynolds Way.

A joint release from the offices of Governor Deval Patrick and Mayor Thomas M. Menino says people should be prepared for “airport-like security” and expect lines and delays. Bags, sharp objects, liquids, and signs are prohibited.

Parking is limited, so organizers strongly advise using public transportation.

U.S. 'deporting Saudi person of interest'
Obama has unscheduled meeting with foreign minister

An expert on terrorism says the Saudi national who was the original “person of interest” in connection with Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing is going to be deported from the U.S. next week.

The foreign student from Revere, Mass., is identified as 20-year-old Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi.

“I just learned from my own sources that he is now going to be deported on national security grounds next Tuesday, which is very unusual,” Steve Emerson of the Investigative Project on Terrorism told Sean Hannity of Fox News Wednesday night.

The Reuters news agency reported President Barack Obama met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal on Wednesday, noting “the meeting was not on Obama’s public schedule.”

After that meeting was mentioned, Emerson told Hannity, “That’s very interesting because this is the way things are done with Saudi Arabia. You don’t arrest their citizens. You deport them, because they don’t want them to be embarrassed and that’s the way we appease them.”

Meanwhile, Tuesday morning, a meeting Secretary of State John Kerry held with the Saudi foreign minister was abruptly closed to press coverage.

“The State Department initially provided no reason for the change, which was announced just 15 minutes before the scheduled 10 a.m. session,” reported Politico.

But later in the day, department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said the preclusion of news media from the meeting was due to Kerry’s busy schedule.

“This was just a scheduling change on our part,” Ventrell said.

Journalists found the claim hard to believe, as they had been told the meeting would include a so-called “camera spray” at the beginning of the session.

“Are you really trying to say that this [meeting was moved from a] camera/photo op to being closed, for scheduling reasons? Is that seriously your answer: that because the secretary was tired after 10 days on the road and is going to the Hill tomorrow?” Matt Lee of the Associated Press asked.

“What I’m saying is he has a very tight schedule here in the building and elsewhere,” Ventrell said, noting the fact Kerry met with Al-Faisal amidst that busy schedule reflects the importance of the U.S. Saudi-relationship.

“So does it save time somehow, canceling the photo op? It doesn’t wash,” Lee replied. “I find it hard to believe that you expect us to believe that that’s the real reason for this.”

WND reported Wednesday morning that the Saudi student Alharbi shares the same last name as a major Saudi clan that includes scores of al-Qaida operatives.

Some in the clan are senior al-Qaida members while others are reportedly being held by the U.S. in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba.

Two Saudi nationals were reportedly injured in the bombings in Boston, with one, Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi, initially put under armed guard at a hospital. Alharbi is reportedly studying in the U.S. on a student visa.

A large group of federal and state law enforcement agents reportedly raided Alharbi’s apartment in Revere, Mass.

CNN reported the search took place by consent, according to a federal law-enforcement source, meaning no search warrant was needed

Now the Saudi embassy in Washington has said Alharbi was no longer under detention and is not a suspect in the bomb blasts.

Saudi diplomat Azzam bin Abdel Karim reportedly visited Alharbi in the hospital.

Nail Al-Jubeir, a spokesman for the Saudi mission in Washington, stated that U.S. authorities told the embassy “no Saudi national was a suspect in the Boston Marathon attack and that the Saudi national in question was a witness, not a suspect.”

While it is not clear whether the Alharbi questioned as part of the marathon probe is a member of the well-known Saudi clan, his Facebook page, reviewed by WND, lists him as Facebook friends with at least seven other Alharbis, located in both Boston and in Saudi Arabia.

One of the Alharbis on his Facebook friends list, Ahmed Alharbi, is listed as a pharmacy technician at the Saudi Ministry of Health. Most others live in Riyadh.

The Alharbi clan has long been active in al-Qaida. Khaled bin Ouda bin Mohammed al-Harbi, for example, is a Saudi national who joined Osama bin Laden’s mujahadeen group in the 1980s. He reportedly became an al-Qaida member in the mid-1990s. He turned himself in to Saudi authorities in 2004 as part of an amnesty deal.

The BBC reported Khaled Alharbi was married to the daughter of al-Qaida’s number two, Ayman al-Zawahri. He reportedly appeared with bin Laden in a video praising the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Another top al-Qaida operative is Adel Radi Saqr al-Wahabi al-Harbi, a Saudi national identified by the State Department as “a key member of an al-Qaida network operating in Iran.”

The State Department has offered a multimillion-dollar reward for the capture of Abdel Alharbi, saying he is an Iran-based al-Qaida facilitator who serves as the deputy to Muhsin al-Fadhl, who runs al-Qaida’s Iran network.

On his website, former Palestinian Liberation Organization operative Walid Shoebat translated a list of the Saudi government’s 85 wanted al-Qaida members.

The list includes several members of the Alharbi clan:

    Badr Saud Uwaid Al-Awufi Al-Harbi
    Muhammad Atiq Uwaid Al-Awufi Al-Harbi
    Khalid Salim Uwaid Al-Lahibi Al-Harbi
    Raed Abdullah Salem Al-Thahiri Al-Harbi
Abdullah Abdul Rahman Muhammad Al-Harbi (leader)
    Fayez Ghuneim Humeid Al-Hijri Al-Harbi

Shoebat also points out that several Alharbi clan members are being held by the U.S. government at Guantanamo Bay, including Salim Salman Awadallah Al-Saidi Al-Harbi, Majid Abdullah Hussein Al-Harbi, Muhammad Abdullah Saqr Al-Alawi Al-Harbi, Ghanem Abdul Rahman Ghanem Al-Harbi and Muhammad Atiq Uwaid Al-Awfi Al-Harbi.

Sounds like the 9/11 Saudi Royal family sudden exit of the country under cover of darkness and US aid.

There's much more going on with that Saudi national. I don't believe he's just a 20 year old student.

Authorities circulate photos of two men spotted carrying bags near site of Boston bombings

Investigators probing the deadly Boston Marathon bombings are circulating photos of two men spotted chatting near the packed finish line, The Post has learned.

In the photos being distributed by law-enforcement officials among themselves, one of the men is carrying a blue duffel bag. The other is wearing a black backpack in the first photo, taken at 10:53 a.m., but it is not visible in the second, taken at 12:30 p.m.

“The attached photos are being circulated in an attempt to identify the individuals highlighted therein,” said an e-mail obtained by The Post. “Feel free to pass this around to any of your fellow agents elsewhere.”

These officials need to get on the same page and tell the media to quit speculating because it's causing confusion.

At first it's reported some "dark-skinned" guy. Then they are saying a white guy they are looking for.

Now they show pictures of dark-skinned guys, neither of which are wearing a hoodie, and the one with the hat, it isn't on backwards. Rarely does a guy wearing a ball cap backwards decide to turn it around and wear it correctly. Notice the sunglasses on the bill of the cap. A person who wears caps a lot does that, it's habit. Just look at NASCAR drivers, they all wear caps, and nearly every one of them put their sunglasses on the bill like that. People who don't wear it backwards do that.

While the color of the back pack is still being called black, the other bag seems to be uncertain, as they have pointed out more than one color. Was the second bag blue, orange, a combination? They don't seem to really know.

Here's the thing though, with that picture, they can trace the crowds by all the cameras and likely find those two guys elsewhere. That blue, what looks like a running suit, really stands out, and so does that white hat.

On Wednesday, a law enforcement official who is being regularly briefed on the investigation told CNN's Susan Candiotti that images showing two men near the marathon finish line were being circulated to state and federal law enforcement agencies. The source described the men as "possible suspects."

But a source told CNN's Deb Feyerick on Thursday that those individuals are no longer of high interest to investigators.

The men faced scrutiny and were considered potentially important to the case because one of them had been carrying a black backpack close to one of the bombing sites.
