NSA 'spied' on most Latin American nations: Brazil paper

The U.S. National Security Agency has targeted most Latin American countries in its spying programs, with Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil and Mexico ranking among those of highest priority for the U.S. intelligence agency, a leading Brazilian newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Citing documents leaked by Edward Snowden, the fugitive former American intelligence contractor, O Globo newspaper said the NSA programs went beyond military affairs to what it termed "commercial secrets."

These included petroleum in Venezuela and energy in Mexico, according to a graphic O Globo identified as being from the NSA and dated February of this year.

Also swept up in what O Globo termed as U.S. spying were Argentina, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Paraguay, Chile, Peru and El Salvador.

Peru's President Ollanta Humala said on Tuesday that the reported spying was worrisome.

"We are against these kinds of espionage activities," Humala said in a televised interview. "It would be good for (Peru's) Congress to look with concern at privacy issues related to personal information."

The most intense surveillance was directed at Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil and Mexico, the newspaper said.

The Globo article was written by Glenn Greenwald, Roberto Kaz and José Casado. Greenwald, an American citizen who works for Britain's Guardian newspaper and lives in Rio de Janeiro, was the journalist who first revealed classified documents provided by Snowden, outlining the extent of U.S. communications monitoring activity at home and abroad.

Greenwald said on Sunday in a Twitter message that he had worked with O Globo on the reports to relay more quickly the scope and reach of the alleged surveillance. The bulk of Greenwald's stories thus far have appeared in the Guardian.

As disclosed by Snowden to the Guardian, the NSA's Prism program collated mail, Internet chat and files directly from the servers of companies such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and Skype.

O Globo cited documents saying that from January to March this year, NSA agents carried out "spying actions" via "Boundless Informant," which it said cataloged telephone calls and access to the Internet. Agents also used Prism from February 2 to 8 this year, O Globo said.

A main NSA surveillance target was Colombia, the United States' top military ally in the region, where drug trafficking and movements by the FARC guerrilla group were monitored, O Globo said.

In Venezuela the NSA spied on military procurement and the oil industry, and in Mexico the agency gathered information on the drug trade, the energy sector and political affairs using Prism.

The newspaper reported on Sunday that the NSA and the Central Intelligence Agency had gathered telephone and email data in Brazil, based on documents Snowden provided to Greenwald.

Brazil's telecommunications agency said on Monday it would investigate whether local operators had violated customer privacy rules in alleged surveillance of Brazilian telecommunications data by the U.S. spy agencies.

The decision came as U.S. officials, including the American ambassador in Brasilia, sought to reassure Brazil that O Globo reports on Sunday and Monday about NSA surveillance of Brazilian communications were incorrect.

According to O Globo, access to Brazilian communications was obtained through American companies that were partners with Brazilian telecommunications companies. The report did not identify any of the companies but said an NSA program called Silverzephyr was used to access phone calls, faxes and emails.

O Globo also reported this week that the CIA and the NSA jointly ran monitoring stations to gather information from foreign satellites in 65 countries, including five in Latin America, citing documents dating from 2002 leaked by Snowden.

The so-called Special Collection Service operated from the capitals of Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Mexico and Brazil. The newspaper said it was not known whether the alleged satellite espionage continued after 2002.

What have we been saying for years now? I mean really. All people have to do is stop doing everything online and with their cellphones. And STOP USING WIFI, or any "wireless" technology whenever reasonably possible.

Legal or not, one SHOULD assume any digital communications are being monitored, period. These news reports shows it's a fact. HELLO!  Roll Eyes

When is the public going to get a clue? According to scripture, many never will.

Who is this Snowden guy, and how in the world has he continued to be elusive DESPITE all the high level technology intelligence equipment this country has?

Reminds me over how Bob Chapman(formerly of International Forecaster and appeared on Alex Jones's show regularly before he died recently) claimed how he was able to hide himself outside of the country from American intelligence authorities(but somehow managed to go unscathed on Jesuit/CIA agent Alex's show).

Personally, it just seems like everything we see on the national(and local) news is nothing but a puppet show. No, I am not denying the NSA spying leaks.

Snowden worked for "them", so he knows their tricks. And also the US government have apparently canceled his passport, allegedly causing him to be stuck at an airport in Russia, or rather, so far as we know, prevents him from entering any country. They know where he is, they just can't go get him without causing a circus I'd say because there are some countries that appreciate his revealing that those countries are being spied on by the US.

White House opposes amendment to curb NSA spying

The White House said the amendment will "hastily dismantle" counterterrorism tools

The amendment proposed by Rep. Justin Amash, a Republican from Michigan, would limit spending only to orders by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that collect phone and other data only of a person who is the subject of an investigation.

Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden disclosed through newspaper reports in June that the NSA was collecting phone metadata from Verizon customers in the U.S. as part of its surveillance, which was said to include data collected from Internet companies.

The authorization to the NSA to collect phone metadata in bulk was last week renewed by the FISC court. The Department of Justice has said that it has to retain the bulk data required by its counterterrorism tools, as it need not be retained by telecommunications service providers.

The Obama administration said Tuesday that it opposes "the current effort in the House to hastily dismantle one of our Intelligence Community's counterterrorism tools. This blunt approach is not the product of an informed, open, or deliberative process," it added.

Obama Denounces Congress for Focusing on ‘Phony Scandals,’ Promises More Executive Action

President Barack Obama, whose administration is staving off questions about several controversies, including the IRS-Tea Party investigation and the National Security Agency telephone surveillance offense – said Congress needs to move beyond “phony scandals.” Speaking at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., on Wednesday, Obama gave the first of what will be several speeches on his economic proposals. He harshly criticized gridlock in Congress and pledged executive action. “With this endless parade of distractions and political posturing and phony scandals, Washington’s taken its eye off the ball,” Obama said. “And I’m here to say, this needs to stop. This needs to stop.” -

Well, in Caesar's world, it doesn't need to stop, because what he calls "phony scandals" is actually the government getting caught red-handed with their socialist agenda.

It's called accountability from representatives in government. It's part of rendering to Caesar. Not one recent scandal isn't true and Obama knows it.

Ultimately, it's not going to stop. Evil can't help itself. It will continue to do evil things till Jesus puts it down.

Feds Demand Major Internet Companies Turn Over User Passwords

The federal government has demanded that major internet companies turn over users’ stored passwords, two sources told the respected tech website CNet.

So what exactly does this “escalation” — as CNet calls it — mean?

“If the government is able to determine a person’s password, which is typically stored in encrypted form, the credential could be used to log in to an account to peruse confidential correspondence or even impersonate the user,” the report says. “Obtaining it also would aid in deciphering encrypted devices in situations where passwords are reused.”

But it doesn’t end there. The government is not only requesting the passwords, but its also asking for algorithms and even security questions:

Some of the government orders demand not only a user’s password but also the encryption algorithm and the so-called salt, according to a person familiar with the requests. A salt is a random string of letters or numbers used to make it more difficult to reverse the encryption process and determine the original password. Other orders demand the secret question codes often associated with user accounts.

According to the report’s sources, the government has requested password information on numerous occasions. Still, both sources said the companies fight them.

“We push back,” one said.

“There’s a lot of ‘over my dead body,’” said another.

Most of the big internet companies — Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo — declined to comment or give any specific information regarding the allegations, but Yahoo did say, “”If we receive a request from law enforcement for a user’s password, we deny such requests on the grounds that they would allow overly broad access to our users’ private information. If we are required to provide information, we do so only in the strictest interpretation of what is required by law.”

Still, CNet does offer some hope for those who may be concerned about this new era of government surveillance: it’s not guaranteed that if the government gets a stored or encrypted password that they can crack it.

“Even if the National Security Agency or the FBI successfully obtains an encrypted password, salt, and details about the algorithm used, unearthing a user’s original password is hardly guaranteed,” the report says. “The odds of success depend in large part on two factors: the type of algorithm and the complexity of the password.”

There is some advice, though, buried deep in the report. Although the author doesn’t expressly say it, he does note that longer passwords that contain odd characters are much harder to crack — even with an algorithm:

One popular algorithm, used by Twitter and LinkedIn, is called bcrypt. A 2009 paper (PDF) by computer scientist Colin Percival estimated that it would cost a mere $4 to crack, in an average of one year, an 8-character bcrypt password composed only of letters. To do it in an average of one day, the hardware cost would jump to approximately $1,500.

But if a password of the same length included numbers, asterisks, punctuation marks, and other special characters, the cost-per-year leaps to $130,000. Increasing the length to any 10 characters, Percival estimated in 2009, brings the estimated cracking cost to a staggering $1.2 billion.

It almost makes you want to go back and read TheBlaze’s report on five ways to thwart the government from spying on you.

Read CNet’s full report for more.

Like I've said before, people really need to start re-thinking their usage of the world's digital toys. As time passes, the restrictions and demands of using those things is rising.

Personally, I see my time coming to an end having internet service, a driver's license, etc. We plan on moving, God willing, in a couple years out of Arizona, and head back east, but that means a new state, and likely means I won't get a new license where we move to, and I'm really giving second thoughts to cable/satellite service as well. Even though I use a non-smart phone, cellular service is on it's way out too. The time to go off grid I think is rapidly approaching.

Well, the 12th and 14th Amendments in the US Constitutions are officially RIP now. First Obama, and now the Illuminati GOP establishment is pushing Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz(at least for now) for 2016...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Cruz
Born
Rafael Edward Cruz
December 22, 1970 (age 42)
Calgary, Alberta, Canada[1]

And to boot only Cruz's mother has an American born citizenship, while his father doesn't - so right there he shouldn't be eligible.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marco_Rubio
Born
Marco Antonio Rubio
May 28, 1971 (age 42)
Miami, Florida, U.S.

And to boot Rubio's parents were born in Cuba, and didn't get USA citizenship until 1975(4 year AFTER he was born) - so he shouldn't be eligible either.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_born_citizen_of_the_United_States
The Constitution does not define the phrase natural-born citizen, and various opinions have been offered over time regarding its precise meaning. A 2011 Congressional Research Service report stated that

The weight of legal and historical authority indicates that the term "natural born" citizen would mean a person who is entitled to U.S. citizenship "by birth" or "at birth", either by being born "in" the United States and under its jurisdiction, even those born to alien parents; by being born abroad to U.S. citizen-parents; or by being born in other situations meeting legal requirements for U.S. citizenship "at birth". Such term, however, would not include a person who was not a U.S. citizen by birth or at birth, and who was thus born an "alien" required to go through the legal process of "naturalization" to become a U.S. citizen.[1]

Ok thanks(didn't know that part).

Sorry I detoured this thread a bit - let's get back to the discussion of this thread.

Anyhow - forgot the Bush II stuff - it seems like now it's come to a point where people in power(whether they're politicians, pastors, or whoever) will blatantly lie for the whole world to see, but en yet no one will question them b/c they're more occupied with their own worldly materials.

Obama lying about the US government having no spying program is another example - we will see how everyone reacts to this, but so far you can hear a pin drop.

Obama calls off Putin summit amid Snowden tensions

LOS ANGELES (AP) - In a rare diplomatic rebuke, President Barack Obama called off an upcoming Moscow summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, sending a stern message of disapproval over Russia's harboring of National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. Although U.S. frustration with Moscow has been growing over other key issues such as missile defense and human rights, it was Russia's decision to grant Snowden asylum in defiance of Obama's repeated requests that dealt the latest blow to uneasy U.S. relations with a former Cold War foe.

Obama to Jay Leno: Russian Laws Against Homosexuality ‘Violating Basic Morality’

During his recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Barack Obama said that Russia and other countries like it are ‘violating basic morality’ by passing laws in opposition to the homosexual lifestyle. After Obama was asked about his reaction to Russia granting asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden, Leno then delved into the issue of homosexuality and the 2014 Olympics. “Well, something that shocked me about Russia — and I’m surprised this is not a huge story — suddenly, homosexuality is against the law,” he said. “I mean, this seems like Germany:  Let’s round up the Jews, let’s round up the gays, let’s round up the blacks. I mean, it starts with that. You round up people who you don’t — I mean, why is not more of the world outraged at this?”

Brazil demands clarifications on NSA surveillance

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — Brazil demanded answers Tuesday from the U.S. about National Security Agency spying in the country and warned that trust between the two nations would be damaged if U.S. explanations about the program were not satisfactory.

HUH? The US has been caught red-handed, and has admitted to secretly spying on Brazil and others, and they say there would be lack of trust if they don't explain themselves satisfactorily? They were already lying to you, and deceiving you, and you still trust them?!  Roll Eyes

Well, I'm surprised Congress and governors in America haven't come out to amend the Constitution a long time ago if they have no problems with Presidents not being naturalized born citizens. First Obama, and apparently Ted Cruz(a potential 2016 candidate) isn't either. And then throw in the whole Hegelian Dialectic game to cause more confusion(read the article, and you'll see why)...

The New Birthers: Republican Ted Cruz's Presidential Eligibility Questioned
8/14/13

Some members of the Republican party who have spent years questioning whether President Obama was really born in the U.S. now find one of their own rising stars in a birther controversy: Ted Cruz, the Canadian-born Tea Party darling.

Leading the conservative-leaning Drudge Report this morning is the headline "CNN: IS CRUZ ELIGIBLE?" The insinuation is that just as people on the right have questioned Obama's roots, CNN -- which many conservatives suspect of a left-wing bias -- is going after a rising conservative.

In other words: They do it, too, so it's okay when we do it
.

To be blunt, Cruz's eligibilty to run is much less certain than Obama's. Obama's isn't even a real question. He's proven repeatedly he was born in Hawaii, and anyone who chooses to believe otherwise truly chooses to believe otherwise. Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta, to an American mother and Cuban father. That's a potential problem, because the Constitution says presidents must be "natural born citizens."

But... why exactly? Because babies born just across the border may be raised to become president and tear down the government from within? That would seem equally easy/hard for natural-born babies. Also, this seems like kind of a slow-going and unlikely way to destroy America. The Kardashians are doing a much better job. Ba-dum.

As CNN notes, the Senate passed a 2008 resolution calling John McCain a "natural born American" despite his birth in a naval air station in the Panama Canal Zone, where his father was serving. That was a good idea. No one objected, because it would be ridiculous to say the children of servicemen and women can't run.

But maybe we can take that common-sense approach to Cruz, too. And Obama. Maybe it's time to amend one of the sillier parts of the Constitution. It's the height of xenophobia to pretend that every single "natural born" American is more qualified to lead the U.S. than anyone from any other country in the world, whether that country is Canada or Kenya.

Not that I'm saying Obama was born in -- nevermind. Not going there again.

Here's the CNN report:
