President Carter Says Catholic Church Should Ordain Women; All Religions Should Promote Gender Equality

YAH, come on Frank, what do you say?

President Jimmy Carter waded in the tricky waters of gender and religion in an interview with Time.com in which he said that the Catholic church was wrong not to ordain women.

In anticipation of a conference called 'Mobilizing Faith for Women' to be held at The Carter Center this week, the former President and current Sunday school teacher was asked if "religion can be a force for women’s rights instead of a source of women’s oppression" by Time's Elizabeth Dias.

The former president said that there was movement towards equality in the major world religion but that religion had done much to support discrimination by 'ordaining' that women were not equal to men:

This has been done and still is done by the Catholic Church ever since the third century, when the Catholic Church ordained that a woman cannot be a priest for instance but a man can. A woman can be a nurse or a teacher but she can’t be a priest. This is wrong, I think.

There is a small but growing movement of dissident Catholics that is ordaining women as priests outside of the official Catholic Church hierarchy. According to a New York Times/CBS News poll, seventy percent of U.S. Catholics believe that women should be allowed to be priests.

Carter also lamented the backward movement of his former denomination. In the last decades, the Southern Baptist Convention reversed its former gender equality policies around the ordination of women, which Carter cites the reason he and his wife Rosalynn left the denomination.

Carter named the Apostle Paul's letter to the Galatians as the Christian scripture he looks to to support equal rights between men and women. It reads:

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Well, you think wrong Jimmy!

If you actually read a real bible, you'd know WHY women are to be silent in the church.

As for Catholics, who cares? At least they got it right about women preachers.

And they aren't preachers not because of equality, which scripture in fact says we are equal, it's because of what Eve did in the garden. That's it, no other reason. But man and woman are still equal, as both are sinners!

And this guy calls himself a Sunday school teacher?  Roll Eyes

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter says some religions sexist

Former President Jimmy Carter, who is sponsoring a conference this week on equality for women in religion, said that some religious institutions are sexist, including the Roman Catholic Church.

"How many Catholic priests do you know that are women? None," Carter said in a telephone interview.

This week at the Carter Centre in Atlanta, Carter will open a conference called Mobilizing Faith for Women to encourage religious leaders to advance equal rights. The conference will include discussion of sex trafficking and war's impact on women.

Carter was known during his political career for being open about his "born-again" Baptist faith.  Cheesy must be the same one George Bush has too

But he publicly broke with the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant denomination, over its decision in 2000 to oppose women as pastors, and is now vocal about discrimination against women by religious leaders.

In the interview conducted on June 20, Carter identified many ways in which women are treated as second-class citizens, including unequal pay in the United States.

"The root cause of it is two-fold," Carter said. "The major religions preach women are inferior to men, and the other thing is just the general condonement of violence in society. The U.S. is one of the prime examples of constant war."nope, its because Jesus said so. Im so glad you know so much better than him

He said the way the Islamic faith is interpreted in some regimes is "very punitive" toward women, such as in Saudi Arabia, where women are banned from driving cars. The Taliban, an Islamic fundamentalist political movement in Afghanistan, shows "extreme prejudice" toward women, Carter said. and there you go, its all about the true believers.

"In some areas, women are treated as children all their lives," Carter said.

Carter belongs to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a moderate group that split from the Southern Baptist Convention. That means in name only, NOT TRUE BELIEVERS, not FUNDAMENTALISTS

"We believe in complete equality between men and women," he said. they believe in effimanite men

Carter's wife, Rosalynn, is a deacon at their Plains, Georgia church, where he teaches Sunday school. Well who would of thought that?

He sees progress in equal treatment of women among certain Protestant denominations including the Methodists and Episcopalians. That is called the Great falling away

He also sees progress in some Islamic countries, such as Tunisia. Also, a group of religious and traditional leaders in Africa called Tostan have eliminated genital cutting and reduced child marriages in 6,000 villages.

Tunisia is considered one of the most progressive of Islamic countries on women's rights, including the right to education and gender equality. But human rights groups have recently expressed concern that the country could retreat on these rights.

"There's a stirring of realization that abuse of women is not only, I would say, morally wrong, but is detrimental to the country's economic progress," Carter said. "Because to omit the tremendous capability among women from the economic growth of the country is beginning to be seen as a negative factor."

Carter said religious writings are often interpreted to permit the oppression of women, just as they once were interpreted to tolerate slavery. But times change, and that can change the way religious texts are viewed, and which texts are emphasized over others. ahhh, here the crux, Yea, hath God said...

He noted, for example, that Saint Paul said there is no difference between women and men, slaves and masters and Jews and Gentiles, that all are equal in the eyes of God.

"That's the primary verse that I quote when I do get into an argument," Carter said. "Not that many people argue with me about it because they know how I feel."

Despite his criticism of Catholicism's lack of female priests, Carter said he thinks Pope Francis has so far done "quite well" in his new role. Bet Carter believes we all worship the same god, except those that worship the God of the Bible

"He has experienced poverty and has lived among poverty-stricken people," Carter said.

He said Francis could emphasize justice and equality of treatment of the very poor more than some of his predecessors.

Besides Carter, forum participants will include Sister Simone Campbell, who helped organize "Nuns on the Bus," which protested budget policies seen as hurting the poor; Zainah Anwar, founder of Sisters in Islam; and Mona Rishmawi, of the United Nations human rights office. The event will be on live webcast Friday and Saturday at www.cartercenter.org.

The Carter Centre is a not-for-profit focused on advancing human rights, founded by Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter.

I read one of Carter's books on his faith at the public library a few years ago - it wasn't completely doctrinally flawed, per se, but every now and then when he has the reader hooked(like myself then), he would slip in some leaven to where he's putting it up as a question/for debate. For example, he said how there's nowhere in the bible where Jesus condemns homosexuality.(and this book was written YEARS ago)

Yeah, not that I recommend reading this book, but nonetheless if you don't ground yourself in the word of God daily, you're going to walk right into a trap that carrot leads you to every time.

As for Carter's statements that Jesus said nothing about homosexuality...

Rom 1:20  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Rom 1:21  Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Rom 1:22  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23  And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Rom 1:24  Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Rom 1:25  Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Rom 1:26  For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Rom 1:27  And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Rom 1:28  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

For example, he said how there's nowhere in the bible where Jesus condemns homosexuality.

it isn't often i get to school a President of the United States.

Mat 19:4  And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
Mat 19:5  And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
Mat 19:6  Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Here Mr. President, the Lord is saying Have ye not read. So that means that the idea he is trying to get across here has been written BEFORE this conversation he is having. Now what the Lord id referencing here is found in the book of Genesis chapter 2.

Gen 2:24  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Wow look at the Mr. President, the Lord is speaking on marriage, and how it is completely created for 1 man and 1 woman. Now i know, you will say that that is about marriage and not homosexuality, or as the Lord calls it SODOMY. But you did praise the DOMA retraction and all.

well lets see here.

Joh_5:46  For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.

hmmm, seems the Lord is giving full credence to the writings of Moses. No surprise as...

2Ti_3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Hmmm, so what we have here is the Lord approving of Moses's writings as they were inspired by the Lord himself!!!  Cheesy Jesus is awesome!!

So what did Moses write?

Lev 18:22  Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Shocked Did Moses write from inspiration from the Lord? Why yes, yes he did. So if Jesus inspired Moses to write it, and Jesus is GOD, Joh 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God., then its very SAFE to say the Lord condemned homosexuality. period. He even backed it up in the NEW TESTAMENT, heck he even use's it as a judgment!!

Rom 1:24  Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Rom 1:26  For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Rom 1:27  And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Shocked Looks like Jesus does not like homosexuality. Guess that makes you a liar, but then if you weren't, you wouldn't have been a President of the United States would you. You really need to repent of your sins and turn to the Lord, he is coming back here real soon, and im afraid that you will be found wanting.

p.s.: see also 1 Cor 6:9-10, 1 Tim 1:9-10 and Jude 7. The Lord has condemned homosexuality, and you sir are a liar.

Just one problem Mark, Jimmy Carter doesn't believe the bible, much less read it.

Carter is nothing but a globalist sellout. And even by worldly standards, he's a weak-kneed sissy! No wonder his brother Billy drank so much (who I met way back in the late 70's in Plains GA on their property for a tennis tourney). He was walking around with a PBR in his hand.

I see Carter playing the same role as Ron Paul, the meek quiet mouthpiece, acting as the good cop, when in reality, he's just as evil as the next one.

Come to think of it, the "alternative" media and the "truth" movement have said nice things about Carter - for example, whenever I read articles from their sites about globalist takeovers with certain agendas et al, every now and then they'll slip in how Carter was a 1 term President b/c he (supposedly)didn't want to promote their agendas.

Also, Carter sides with the Palestinians, which is probably why the "truth" movement likes him.

As for Carter being a 1 term President - Ronald Reagan was being groomed for that position for a long time, so it's a moot argument.

This seems to be gaing some traction as another assault against those dirty fundies

But im really disturbed by this story. Mostly for the pic used.  Huh

Mayor Jon Gnarr: "Stop abuse against women in the name of religion" Featured

Mayor of Reykjavik, Jón Gnarr, posted on facebook page this morning a message to show his support for women in Ireland (and everywhere) that have to fight for their rights. The mayor is disgusted by the abuse of women in the name of religion.

This is what Jón Gnarr posted on his page:

Stop abuse against women in the name of religion.

Women are not inferior to man in any way.

What your religion says about it is outdated nonsense.

Women fight for your rights!

  He also posted this story:

Irish Women Emerge From Shadows Of 'National Shame'

The mayor then added a comment:
This is really offensive, go to the link if you want to read it. But here is the pic used for this story

Just what kind of women are they promoting here? thats a guy

That's the thing with the world, even "one of their own" can tell SOME truth in what they say, but it's still born of unbelief and their words WILL be filled with lies, though they may try to "salt" it with some biblical reference.

10  For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
11  Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.
12  One of themselves, [even] a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians [are] alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.
13  This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
14  Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
Titus 1:10-14 (KJB)
