Leading Scientist Says NASA Close to Knowing Whether Alien Life Exists (Video)

In a bold prediction, one of the world’s leading scientists claims NASA is close to discovering whether alien life truly exists.

Dr. John Grunsfeld, the physicist and former astronaut who heads NASA’s Science Mission Directorate was among a panel of scientists who spoke to the House Science, Space and Technology Committee on Tuesday.

Grunsfeld remarked, “Are we alone? Many, many people on planet Earth want to know…We are on the cusp of being able to answer that question.”

Grunsfeld and his fellow panelists urged legislators to continue current levels of funding for space exploration by describing recent developments in the field.

One such accomplishment is the New Horizons space probe, which recently completed the first-ever flyby of Pluto–the former planet on the outer edge of the solar system.

So far, only a small amount of data has made it back to Earth. Full transmission will take around 16 months.

Dr. Alan Stern, the New Horizons mission’s principal investigator noted, “We found evidence of nitrogen glaciers…[and]…A mountain range as tall as the Rockies…This is quite a ride, scientifically.”

In addition to Pluto’s wealth of information, the search for alien life has been buoyed by NASA’s recent discovery of a potentially-Earth-like planet 1400 light years away.

The planet, Kepler-452b, resides in a “habitable zone” where temperatures would theoretically allow for liquid water, and with it, life.

Apollo 14 Astronaut Claims Extraterrestrials Witnessed the First U.S. Nuclear Detonation and Tried to ‘Keep Us From Going to War’

NASA Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell has been open about his views regarding extraterrestrial life and most recently he’s claiming that UFOs interfered with military missiles and attempted to “keep us from going to war.”

Speaking with the U.K. tabloid the Daily Mirror this week, Mitchell, who was the sixth man on the moon, said that other people have told him UFOs were present during the first U.S. nuclear weapons test in White Sands desert in New Mexico, and that “ETs had been attempting to keep us from going to war and help create peace on Earth.”

Mitchell’s latest comments come after the 70th anniversary of two  atomic bombs being dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

He also told the tabloid that others have shared with him experiences of UFOs interfering with missiles later on.

“I have spoken to many Air Force officers who worked at these silos during the Cold War. They told me UFOs were frequently seen overhead and often disabled their missiles,” he recounted to the Mirror. “Other officers from bases on the Pacific coast told me their [test] missiles were frequently shot down by alien spacecraft.”

Nick Pope, a journalist who used to investigate UFO reports for the British Ministry of Defence, told the Mirror he thinks Mitchell is an “honorable and truthful man,” but added “most of his information on this issue comes not from things he’s experienced himself, but from things he’s been told by others.”

“Clearly, because of who he is, he’s had access to government, military and intelligence community personnel at the highest level, but because — quite understandably — he won’t name his sources, we can’t be certain these people were being straight with him, or indeed that they were privy to any classified information about UFOs,” Pope told the tabloid newspaper.

He added that the idea of “peace-loving extraterrestrials” wanting to help save humanity is similar to the plot of a 1951 science-fiction film.

Pope also provided an alternative explanation for some of the UFO sightings.

“[...] some of these sightings are attributable to espionage activity involving secret spy planes or drones,” he told the Mirror.

A couple of years ago, Bloomberg News spoke with Mitchell regarding his views on UFOs. He was described at the time as “no dummy”:

While on active duty as a test pilot for the U.S. Navy, he completed an M.S. in aeronautical engineering at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and a doctorate in aeronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mitchell also served in combat during the Korean War as a fighter pilot. In 1970, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Though he admitting to never seeing a UFO himself, Mitchell told Bloomberg people related to witnesses of the 1947 Roswell incident contacted him after his spaceflight in the 1970s.

“I was contacted by descendants of the original Roswell observers, including the person who delivered the child-sized coffins to the Air Force to contain alien bodies. Another was one of the children of the deputy sheriff who was patrolling traffic around the site,” he told Bloomberg. “There was also a military officer who was a friend of the families not involved in that particular operation, but who did share office space there. They all seemed credible with their stories that the bodies found were alien.”

Mitchell said he thinks the government might have engaged in a cover up because “leadership officials thought people weren’t ready to handle it.”

“But we are well past that now,” he told Bloomberg.

Exo Vaticana | Re-educate | Integrate | Incorporate | Exterminate

Lenin once said: “Give me just one generation of youth and I will transform the whole world.”

The appointed time for such an all encompassing endeavor is upon us and the re-educational authority apparently delegated to the Vatican and Unesco. They, by means of spiritual and cognitive terraforming, progress to integrate all formerly opposing belief systems striving to integrate even those entities beyond earthly dimensions.

E is for education | V is for vision | O is for oneness

‘Education is an essential dimension of human dignity and the fight against exclusion and poverty,’ Pope Francis declared during his visit to Unesco early this year. Building on this mind setting ground work, last June he called for “a new vision of humanity in relation to the planet that is our home. This is a call for courage and unity, where every woman and man has opportunities and skills to contribute, especially the most marginalized, where sustainability means much than green laws and policies – it means new ways of thinking and behaving as global citizens, it means a new focus on the ocean and biodiversity. We need this vision and courage more than ever to reach a new climate change agreement this year in Paris”.

His socio-religious unification progresses rapidly. In another address Pope Francis made it a point to say that he believes that Muslims and Christians worship and pray to the “one God” that he also worships. This “all roads lead to the same God” philosophy is a hallmark of the one world religion that the global elite have been slowly building toward for decades.

On the onset of his visit to the US to address the UN General Assembly this September, his vision has extended to the premise that even creation and evolution can co-exist.

“Speaking to the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope said, “The Big Bang, which nowadays is positioned as the origin of the world, does not contradict the divine act of creating, but rather requires it. The evolution of nature does not contrast with the notion of Creation, because evolution presupposes the creation of beings that evolve.

We witness minds and hearts worldwide being re-programmed to believe and act upon the greatest lies ever conceptualized.

D is for discernment

Let us be responsive, use and strengthen our discernment and share our Lord’s truth, way and life through His son Jesus before they are sealed.

For further study:

Unicef alien diversity

UNICEF Chile’s recent public service announcement featured a young alien hybrid boy being introduced as the “new kid” in school. The alien hybrid child appears to be green with a speckled forehead and vary large eyes.

He is dressed like a human, and even at first glance appears to be human. A second glance however shows us that he is indeed not human and the human kids look at him with fear and disgust. He is teased, made fun of, bullied and the poor boy stares up at the ceiling of his room wondering if he will ever fit in. Eventually, the students learn to adapt and befriend the young alien boy.

Cris Putnam states on his website:

“The Vatican has positioned itself to be the religious authority if a genuine intelligent ET makes contact. For this reason, it’s quite intriguing that UNICEF has released a video laying the ground for ET integration into classrooms with human children.”

You are not alone: most people believe that aliens exist

Majorities across Britain, Germany and the USA believe that extra-terrestrial life exists

More than one in two people in the UK, Germany and the US believe there is intelligent life out there in the universe. The next time the subject comes up at the dinner table and you hear sniggers when someone admits they believe in aliens, it is worth remembering that it is not a fringe belief to think there is intelligent life out there – it is the mainstream viewpoint across the western world.

New YouGov research reveals that majorities of the public in Britain, Germany and the US believe that living creatures who have the ability to communicate and do not come from Earth exist.

Germans (56%) are the most likely to believe this, followed by Americans (54%) and then British people (52). At most a third (32% in Germany) assertively do not believe in extra-terrestrial live, although this is lower in Britain and the US.

Men, across all three countries, are more likely to believe in extra-terrestrial life. Only in Germany do a majority of women (51%) believe. The oldest people are the least likely to believe in all three countries – in Britain, for example, 45% of over-60s believe in aliens compared to 59% of 18-24s.
The Fermi Paradox

Stephen Hawking has described the search for extra-terrestrial life as "the most exciting quest in 21st-century science" and backed a new project, the Breakthrough Initiative, the biggest effort yet to search for alien intelligence.

Our total lack of evidence for intelligent life contradicts the incredibly low chance that ours is the only planet where it exists in the 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planet universe, a problem knows as the 'Fermi Paradox'. British people who believe alien life exists say the most likely reasons for the paradox are that intelligent life is too far away for us to be able to contact it, and that our technology is not advanced enough for communication.

University of California Scientists: 'Camouflaged' Aliens Live Among Us

Scientists of the University of California came up with an unusual hypothesis suggesting that space aliens have long settled on Earth and lived among us as observers.

Of course, there is no evidence of this, but according to ancient sources, including the Bible, nope our planet has been visited by representatives of extraterrestrial civilizations since its inception.

In 2000 scientists of the University of California, led by Professor Jonathan Malkisom, held a press conference, during which the sensational news that representatives of extraterrestrial civilizations have long been among humans was reported. They adopted human appearance and closely monitor our every move.

“It’s like an extreme version of the camouflage found in some insects and animals. Moreover, according to historical records, there have been aliens on Earth from the beginning of creation,” says Adrian Kent of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada.

A confirmation of the words of the Canadian scientist can be found in the Book of Genesis, at the point where the confrontation of Jacob with the Almighty is described:

“And Jacob remained alone; and a man wrestled with him until the rising of the dawn.” Not an alien

The ancient philosophers were always looking for the answer to the question whether beings arriving from the sky are members of the same tribe as the angels. But as a rule, the answer was no, since the arriving beings were mortal, while the angels live forever.

The question of extraterrestrial civilizations was openly and seriously discussed for the first time only in the twentieth century, especially after the CIA declassified a small part of the archive on the so-called Roswell case, when the U.S. militaries found a crashed flying saucer and delivered its parts to the base.

There is information that in addition to the unknown space object debris, the bodies of three aliens were found and taken to the base. The cause of the incident was the impact of ground radars on the navigation equipment of aliens.

According to another version, the UFO was hit by lightning.

There are reports that U.S. President John F. Kennedy, a few days before his death, asked the head of the CIA to provide all the materials about the incident, but he did not manage to access the most secret archives.

From the 1980′s, many people started claiming that they not only had seen the appearance of a UFO in the sky, but had been inside these objects, and even had come into contact with the aliens.
Picture
One of the most famous contactees is Bulgarian prophet Vanga:

“Sometimes one of the aliens takes my hand. They communicate only with a few inhabitants of our planet. They are constantly watching us,” said Vanga about her contacts with representatives of extraterrestrial civilizations.

What do aliens want on Earth?

There is only a hypothesis, which was suggested by British scientist Timothy Good in his book, Beyond Top Secret: The Worldwide UFO Security Threat:
“The Earth is no longer an 'intermediate base.' They have settled here for a good long time now.”

In January 2011, British scientists announced the need to prepare for emergency meeting with an extraterrestrial civilization, and even suggested the foundation of a special committee at the UN.

CTI Receives NASA Grant

The Center of Theological Inquiry (CTI) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant by the NASA Astrobiology Program to convene an interdisciplinary inquiry into the societal implications of the search for life in the universe.

The project is intended to refresh and expand scholarly and public dialogue on this subject, which is of growing interest due to the discovery of thousands of extrasolar planets and the ongoing search for potentially habitable environments in our solar system and beyond. With this $1.108 million grant, CTI will oversee a resident team of visiting scholars in theology, the humanities, and social sciences that will conduct an interdisciplinary inquiry on the societal implications of astrobiology, the study of the origins, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe.

This inquiry will extend over two academic years from 2015 to 2017. It will focus on the societal implications of astrobiology’s current research goals and findings, which will be studied in symposia and video-linked conversations with leading scientists in the field. Applications will be welcomed from collaborative scholars who are examining the concerns raised by astrobiology for the humanities, or pursuing research on societal issues related to the evolution and future of life.

Announcing the NASA grant, CTI’s director William Storrar said, “The aim of this inquiry is to foster theology’s dialogue with astrobiology on its societal implications, enriched by the contribution of scholars in the humanities and social sciences. We are grateful to the NASA Astrobiology Program for making this pioneering conversation possible.”

CTI is an independent academic institution for interdisciplinary research on global concerns with an international visiting scholar program in Princeton, NJ. Further information on CTI’s resident program and application process can be found on the Center’s website at: www.ctinquiry.org. The Request for Proposals on this topic for the 2015-2016 academic year can be found here, with the online application window open from December 15, 2014 to January 31, 2015.

NASA Says No More Live Feed From ISS

Looks like NASA finally had enough of alternative news outlets reporting on the UFO's from the streams.

Despite many people monitor that feed and then post videos and photos of what they have found NASA has decided to end the live feed from the International Space Station which will be phased out in August and discontinued Sept 1, 2016.

But unless there is a legitimate reason they cannot shut them down and they forget that we, the tax payers, own those cams, we paid for them as well as to be sent up. NASA tried this before and people complained and NASA was forced to put them back online.

The unexpected ending of this live feed only proves once again that NASA is trying to hide something from us or maybe a big event is coming up.

Read NASA's statement here. http://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-announces-changes-to-international-space-station-coverage

Is the Pope About to Make an ET Disclosure at World Religion Unification Conference?

There will soon be an ecumenical gathering between the three monotheist faiths. Thee event will take place from September 4-23, 2016. This monumental event will occur in the Old City of Jerusalem. This is not just a religious event as the event will also consist of musical artists, actors and media and other famous personalities from the four corners of the globe. I feel compelled to ask the question, “Will this also be a Bohemian Grove II”?

One thing that we can say for certain, is that the Pope is the central figure in this event and as we know from his past statements, he will not be representing Jesus at the conference. In fact, the Pope likens the spreading of the word of Jesus to a form of Jihadism.  Many Christians have already dubbed the Pope the new leader of Chislam, which is a made-up term to describe the blending of Islam and Christianity into one religion.

Catholoic Doctrine has Been Morphed Into the Perverted Practice Global Religious Unification

The leaders of the multi-religious, pagan event, have named this unholy gathering as “Mekudeshet”. They have announced plans to perform an 11 day consecration. This can only mean one thing. This is the beginning of the mandatory One World Religion. This is something that Francis has been working towards. However, this is not the only thing that the Pope, or more accurately, the anti-Pope has been pursuing over the last couple of years. He has seemingly been on a man crusade to promote belief in the notion of the existence of exterrestial life.

The Pope and ET’s

I have been noticing a trend in Hollywood movies with an extraterrestrial overtone (e.g. Independence Day) and this tone is reaching a crescendo within the past month. In a search for predictive programming trends, I have noticed a distinct pattern with regard various networks to play older movies that involve the people of the Earth versus some alien threat.

Christianity and Islam worship the same God.

pope and etI have long thought that this Pope might be suffering from early onset dementia as he recently said he would baptize extraterrestrials as they would visit the Earth. This is the same Pope who has stated that Islam and Christianity are basically one and the same religion. This false doctrine sets the stage for the official state sponsored (United Nations) approved religion which we commonly call Gaia which is about as a pagan of a religion that there is. In light of these facts, does anyone have any questions as to why I have great trepidation with regard to the upcoming religious unification conference?

Before I discuss Operation Blue Beam, it is important to note that the predictive programming for this event goes far beyond Hollywood as we are seeing predictive programming in many segments of our society.

Key General Predicts that Graduating Officers Will One Day Fight Aliens

The following video depicts General Mark A Milley, mentioning “little green men”, and he’s not joking” as being one of the potential adversaries in the lineup of enemies that a graduating class of military officers will one day have to fight.

Is ET Disclosure On the Table for This Conference?

Some people that I have spoken are fearful that Operation Blue Beam will be the end result from this conference. A Catholic Bishop, speaking on a condition of anonymity, reached out to me and referenced what I have written in the past regarding a false flag event that is referred to as Operation Blue Beam. He told me how close to the truth I have been in the past and that he wanted me to keep intense attention on this event. .

The Blue Beam Project has four different steps in order to implement a new age religion, along with the roll out of a fake Antichrist at its head. Oh, I believe that we will see an Anti-Christ, but this will not be it. We must remember that the new age religion is the very foundation for the new world government, without which religion the dictatorship of the New World Order is completely impossible. In the final stage of the plan, it will be made clear to the people that an alien invasion is imminent and the consolidation of government will be “needed” for mankind to survive. Operation Blue Beam then calls for a demonstration of ET power which can be faked through the use of holograms. But by then, resistance will be too late, because all opposition will have been eliminated.

Hillary Clinton and the UFO Question

Hillary Clinton was viewed at the Rockefeller Ranch holding a book by Paul Davies regarding the implications of extraterrestrial life.

Interestingly, Vince Foster, friend and advisor to President Clinton, was tasked with two missions upon Bill Clinton’s election. First, find out who killed JFK. Secondly, find out the truth behind the alien question. Foster, as all will recall, committed “suicide” under some very mysterious circumstances.

“President” Hillary Clinton would be ideal to usher in this new theology in response to a manufactured ET threat. The Clinton have been obsessed with the topic of ETs for a very long time.

Dr. Carol Rosin and Wernher Von Braun

Dr. Rosin recounts her four year association with Von Braun, and is she is quick to point out that he predicted that mankind would have a series of “boogey men” designed to manipulate mankind on the way to a New World Order.

First, Von Braun said we would fear the Russians followed by terrorists and then we would fear asteroids and then, finally, mankind would be manipulated into believing that the earth was going to be attacked by aliens. The end game from this reign of terror would be planetary unification.

Conclusion

When and if this plan materializes, don’t believe a single word of it, no matter how real ET seems to be. Why not? Because this event fits under the Biblical category of “Rumors of War”.
It is my sincere belief that we are not going to have to wiat very long for this false doctrine, from the false prophet to appear as we have already been pre-programmed for this event.

Here is a video which encapsulaate the attempt to unify all world religions.

I don't agree with everything the guy says, but when he speaks, which is for most of the video, he gives vital information and the callers talk about their experiences being abducted.

WIKILEAKS’ EMAIL LEAKS UNCOVER THE VATICAN’S POSSIBLE KNOWLEDGE OF EXTRATERRESTRIALS

Yesterday, we published an article detailing the most recent leaks made by Wikileaks’ Julian Assange, which included the disclosure of more emails connected to the Clinton Campaign. This time, it was John Podesta’s account, showing multiple emails from Dr. Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 astronaut, showing how Mitchell (1940-2016) had big plans, and big meetings set up.

Edgar Mitchell was very active in moving the “disclosure” process by discussing the matter with various contacts inside of the White House and Pentagon, along with the Disclosure Project’s Dr. Steven Greer.

Here is one of the emails that was recently released by Wikileaks, and it mentions the Vatican:

“Dear John, As 2015 unfolds, I understand you are leaving the Administration in February. It is urgent that we agree on a date and time to meet to discuss Disclosure and Zero Point Energy, at your earliest available after your departure. My Catholic colleague Terri Mansfield will be there too, to bring us up to date on the Vatican’s awareness of ETI. Another colleague is working on a new Space Treaty, citing involvement with Russia and China. However with Russia’s extreme interference in Ukraine, I believe we must pursue another route for peace in space and ZPE on Earth. I met with President Obama’s Honolulu childhood friend, US Ambassador Pamela Hamamoto on July 4 at the US Mission in Geneva, when I was able to tell her briefly about Zero Point Energy. I believe we can enlist her as a confidante and resource in our presentation for President Obama. I appreciate Eryn’s assistance in working with Terri to set up our meeting.” (source)

The Vatican & ETs

As you can imagine, the topic of extraterrestrial life dives into various sub-topics, and one of them is the religious interpretation of extraterrestrials, and there are many.

The first step, however, seems to be to have religious people accept the fact that ‘ET’ doesn’t have to contradict what they believe in.

For the past few years, the world’s largest church has played a major role in the alien debate.

For example, Monsignor Corrado Balducci, a longtime friend of Pope John Paul II and the Vatican’s leading exorcist, is one of multiple people from within the Vatican who has been very outspoken about extraterrestrials. On multiple occasions, he has stated that contact between humans and extraterrestrials has already happened.

“The existence of these beings is real. We can’t have doubts.” (source)

In 2005, Vatican astronomer Guy Consolmagno said that humankind is facing a future discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence. In 2008, Vatican chief astronomer Father Jose Gabriel Funes stated that the discovery of intelligent extraterrestrial life, and its existence on a planet other than Earth, doesn’t contradict their faith.

Ask yourself this question: why would all of these Vatican authorities speak so openly and passionately about the subject?   Perhaps there is something going on here?

The email from Dr. Mitchell certainly hints to that possibility, and the constant discussions regarding extraterrestrials coming out of the Vatican in the form of public statements also does.

As for Pope Francis, this is what he has had to say:

“He created beings and allowed them to develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one, so that they were able to develop and to arrive at their fullness of being. He gave autonomy to the beings of the universe at the same time at which he assured them of his continuous presence, giving being to every reality. And so creation continued for centuries and centuries, millennia and millennia, until it became which we know today, precisely because God is not a demiurge or a magician, but the creator who gives being to all things.” (source)

He has also said that extraterrestrial beings would be welcomed, and that he would try to have them baptized. Guy Consolmagno (mentioned earlier) has expressed the same sentiment. (source)

In most cases, religion actually confirms the existence of life beyond our own world. For example, in Sikhism, God did not limit life to our planet, but created it throughout the cosmos. In Islam, God created other planets similar to Earth, full of other life forms. Islam also speaks of the Jinn, multidimensional creatures who can be “good” or “evil.” In Christianity, there are various interpretations of life beyond our own world, and in many ancient Vedic scriptures we have the same. The list goes on and on.

Vatican/Religious Controversy

Another discussion that’s going to stem from any type of ET disclosure and the religious interpretation from certain places, is deception and misinformation. If you think about it, this might not be the easiest process, especially because we are dealing with people’s belief systems here.

As many of you probably already know, the Vatican has been shrouded in massive sex abuse scandals, and accused of hiding and concealing ancient knowledge inside of its library.

Whether they’ve used religion as a form of control, and plan on doing the same thing when it comes to extraterrestrial life, who knows. Pope Francis has been making a lot of positive headlines lately, which seems to have many people confused, given the fact that a massive amount of people perceive an organization like the Vatican to be a ‘dark’ one (just as many people perceive it to be a ‘good’ one).

I've been seeing ads for this site for some time now. Gaia.com, this is a very high level new age site that is pushing alien disclosure. Of course their aliens all live on higher lanes of reality.  Cheesy IE: devils in disguise. Beware of their literature and stuff that is making the rounds. Oh and avoid anything with David Wilcox  Cheesy tool

Strange messages coming from the stars are ‘probably’ from aliens, scientists say

'It is too early to unequivocally attribute these purported signals to the activities of extraterrestrial civilizations,' a group of scientists looking for aliens have warned – but the signals are encouraging

Scientists have heard hugely unusual messages from deep in space that they think are coming from aliens.

A new analysis of strange modulations in a tiny set of stars appears to indicate that it could be coming from extraterrestrial intelligence that is looking to alert us to their existence.

The new study reports the finding of specific modulations in just 234 out of the 2.5 million stars that have been observed during a survey of the sky. The work found that a tiny fraction of them seemed to be behaving strangely.

And there appears to be no obvious explanation for what is going on, leaving the scientists behind the paper to conclude that the messages are coming from aliens.

“We find that the detected signals have exactly the shape of an [extraterrestrial intelligence] signal predicted in the previous publication and are therefore in agreement with this hypothesis,” write EF Borra and E Trottier in a new paper. “The fact that they are only found in a very small fraction of stars within a narrow spectral range centered near the spectral type of the sun is also in agreement with the ETI hypothesis,” the two scientists from Laval University in Quebec write.

The research has appeaed in the journal Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, under the title 'Discovery of peculiar periodic spectral modulations in a small fraction of solar type stars'. It appears to have been originally suggested for publication with the name 'Signals probably from Extraterrestrial Intelligence', according to a pre-print version of the paper hosted online.

But they make clear that further work will need to be done to confirm or deny that hypothesis. That will need to be done by watching for the same signals on different equipment so that all other explanations can be discarded.

Breakthrough Listen – an initiative set up this year to look for alien life and supported by people including Stephen Hawking and Mark Zuckerberg – said that the message was promising. But they said that further work will have to be done before they can be “unequivocally attributed” to aliens.

“The one in 10,000 objects with unusual spectra seen by Borra and Trottier are certainly worthy of additional study,” the team said in a statement. “However, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

“It is too early to unequivocally attribute these purported signals to the activities of extraterrestrial civilizations. Internationally agreed-upon protocols for searches for evidence of advanced life beyond Earth (SETI) require candidates to be confirmed by independent groups using their own telescopes, and for all natural explanations to be exhausted before invoking extraterrestrial agents as an explanation.

“Careful work must be undertaken to determine false positive rates, to rule out natural and instrumental explanations, and most importantly, to confirm detections using two or more independent telescopes.”

Could Mysterious Cosmic Light Flashes Be Powering Alien Spacecraft?

Bizarre flashes of cosmic light may actually be generated by advanced alien civilizations, as a way to accelerate interstellar spacecraft to tremendous speeds, a new study suggests.

Astronomers have catalogued just 20 or so of these brief, superbright flashes, which are known as fast radio bursts (FRBs), since the first one was detected in 2007. FRBs seem to be coming from galaxies billions of light-years away, but what's causing them remains a mystery.

"Fast radio bursts are exceedingly bright given their short duration and origin at great distances, and we haven't identified a possible natural source with any confidence," study co-author Avi Loeb, a theorist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said in a statement Thursday (March 9). "An artificial origin is worth contemplating and checking." [5 Bold Claims of Alien Life]

One potential artificial origin, according to the new study, might be a gigantic radio transmitter built by intelligent aliens. So Loeb and lead author Manasvi Lingam, of Harvard University, investigated the feasibility of this possible explanation.

The duo calculated that a solar-powered transmitter could indeed beam FRB-like signals across the cosmos — but it would require a sunlight-collecting area twice the size of Earth to generate the necessary power.

And the huge amounts of energy involved wouldn't necessarily melt the structure, as long as it was water-cooled. So, Lingam and Loeb determined, such a gigantic transmitter is technologically feasible (though beyond humanity's current capabilities).

Why would aliens build such a structure? The most plausible explanation, according to the study team, is to blast interstellar spacecraft to incredible speeds. These craft would be equipped with light sails, which harness the momentum imparted by photons, much as regular ships' sails harness the wind. (Humanity has demonstrated light sails in space, and the technology is the backbone of Breakthrough Starshot, a project that aims to send tiny robotic probes to nearby star systems.)

Indeed, a transmitter capable of generating FRB-like signals could drive an interstellar spacecraft weighing 1 million tons or so, Lingam and Loeb calculated.

"That's big enough to carry living passengers across interstellar or even intergalactic distances," Lingam said in the same statement.

Humanity would catch only fleeting glimpses of the "leakage" from these powerful beams (which would be trained on the spacecraft's sail at all times), because the light source would be moving constantly with respect to Earth, the researchers pointed out.

The duo took things a bit further. Assuming that ET is responsible for most FRBs, and taking into account the estimated number of potentially habitable planets in the Milky Way (about 10 billion), Lingam and Loeb calculated an upper limit for the number of advanced alien civilizations in a galaxy like our own: 10,000.

Lingam and Loeb acknowledge the speculative nature of the study. They aren't claiming that FRBs are indeed caused by aliens; rather, they're saying that this hypothesis is worthy of consideration.

"Science isn't a matter of belief; it's a matter of evidence," Loeb said. "Deciding what’s likely ahead of time limits the possibilities. It's worth putting ideas out there and letting the data be the judge."

The new study has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. You can read it for free on the online preprint site arXiv.org.

Hackers claim NASA was to announce ‘alien life’

Hacking group ‘Anonymous’ has claimed NASA is on the verge of announcing the discovery of alien life.

In a video posted to YouTube, the group suggests NASA scientists made the announcement at the last meeting of the US Science, Space and Technology committee.

The hackers claim NASA Science Mission Directorate Professor Thomas Zurbuchen told the meeting that our civilisation was on the verge of discovering evidence of alien life in cosmos.

“Taking into account all of the different activities and missions that are searching for alien life, we are on the verge of making one of the most profound, unprecedented discoveries in history,” he said according to the hackers.

Quoting a NASA spokesperson, the video also says there are many who claim that unofficially, mankind has already made contact with aliens and not just little micro-organisms floating around inside a massive alien ocean, “but advanced space-faring civilisations.”

The suggestion comes after the space agency announced its Kepler space observatory discovered 2019 “potential news worlds” in other solar systems which could be in the “goldilocks” zone – which is adequate temperature to permit life.

“Twenty-five years ago, we didn't know that planets existed beyond our solar system,” the spokesperson said, according to the video.

"Today we have confirmed the existence of over 3,400 exoplanets that orbit other suns, and we continue to make new discoveries."

'Strange' signals that appear to be coming from a star close to Earth may have been sent by ALIENS, scientists say

FREQUENCY FLIERS

Astronomers picked up the communications in May and have refused to rule out the possibility they were sent by extraterrestrials

STARGAZERS have received “some very peculiar signals” while observing a distant dwarf star.

Experts listening in at the Arecibo Observatory were on a planet-spotting mission when the strange “pulses” came over the radio between April and May.

However, while boffins have not ruled out the possibility that the signals were produced by aliens, it’s not currently the top theory about their origin.

It wasn’t until two weeks after the project finished that they noticed the strange signals which came from Ross 128 (GJ447), some 11 light years away, on 12 May at 1.53 AM (BST).

Ross 128 is a small red dwarf that is the 12th closest star to Earth – which makes it very close indeed when compared to the billions and billions of other suns out there in the universe.

“We believe that the signals are not local radio frequency interferences (RFI) since they are unique to Ross 128 and observations of other stars immediately before and after did not show anything similar,” wrote Professor Abel Mendez in a blogpost last week.

The planetary astrobiologist and Nasa fellow who is based at the University of Puerto Rico believes there could be three explanations for the strange noises.

One possibility is a series of solar flare emissions from the star.

 European Southern Observatory
Three Earth-like planets were found to be orbiting the habitable zone around a star known as Trappist 1 but it's unclear whether Ross 128 has any

They could be also be emissions from another object which is in the field of view of Ross 128 (GJ447).

The third solution suggests we might be to blame for it.

Soaring space junk or a stray satellite might have burst onto the radar, Professor Mendez suggested.

However, alien hunters will be pleased to learn it could be a bunch of extra-terrestrials hoping to get in touch - a possibility Mendez said he couldn't rule out.

But he was quick to point out was "at the bottom of [a list of] many other better explanations".

NASA Announces 6-Figure ‘Planetary Protection Officer’ Job Opening To Keep The Earth Safe From ‘Alien Contamination’
“NASA maintains policies for planetary protection applicable to all space flight missions that may intentionally or unintentionally carry Earth organisms and organic constituents to the planets or other solar system bodies, and any mission employing spacecraft, which are intended to return to Earth and its biosphere with samples from extraterrestrial targets of exploration,” the job description states.

8/1/17

If you’re looking for a job that’s out of this world, there’s a position that just opened at NASA to fight aliens. The gig, which comes with a six-figure salary, would involve protecting the planet and its inhabitants from alien contamination and vice versa.

In doing so, the planetary protection officer is responsible for how “planetary protection policies” will be implemented during NASA space flight missions.

‘Men in Black’ Minus Ray-Bans: Meet Your Planetary Protection Officer

If the job sound unique, that’s because it’s only one of two full-time roles in the world, according to Business Insider.

The position has become available because Catherine Conley, who is currently serving as NASA’s planetary protection officer, will be vacating the post.

“This new job ad is a result of relocating the position I currently hold to the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance, which is an independent technical authority within NASA,” Conley told Business Insider.

According to the posting, the position offers a yearly salary between $124,406 to $187,000.

The job would require a commitment of three years, but could be extended for an addition two years. source

Next year, scientists will send messages to search for aliens

For the last half-century or so, astronomers around the world have been scanning the cosmos with massive radio telescopes in hopes of finding some sign of intelligent life. This network of alien-hunters comprises the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), but despite all their efforts, the interstellar radio waves have remained quiet. One might even say too quiet.

Depending on who you ask, first contact with an extraterrestrial civilization might happen any day now. Seth Shostak, director of the SETI Institute, has famously predicted that we'll hear from ET within the next two decades. Others, such as the Cornell University astronomer Yervant Terzian are less optimistic -- his probabilistic calculations place first contact in about 1,500 years, assuming there's anyone left on Earth to receive the call.

But many SETI astronomers aren't content with only scanning the airwaves for signs of ET. Instead, they think we should also be actively reaching out to the cosmos on behalf of planet Earth.

These astronomers occupy a controversial niche within the SETI community known as Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligences, or METI. At the forefront of this group is Douglas Vakoch, president of METI International, a research group dedicated to designing and sending messages intended for extraterrestrial recipients.

Vakoch and his colleagues at METI International are fighting an uphill battle. Aside from all the technical problems that come with trying to contact aliens, many SETI astronomers think it's a bad idea.

The METI opposition group, which includes scientists like Stephen Hawking, argues that since we have no idea what ET might be like, sending a message into the cosmos comes with a huge existential risk. If the aliens happen to be friendly, no problem. But if they're hostile, that means we're essentially sending out a beacon that says "ATTACK HERE."

A lot of ink has been spilled over whether or not actively attempting to make contact with extraterrestrials is advisable. But despite the arguments to the contrary, Vakoch said he's not worried.

"One of the reasons people are so afraid of METI is that it seems riskier to do something than to do nothing," Vakoch told me over email. "When we try to evaluate the risks and benefits of an unknown situation where we have little or no actual data, we fall back on the most vivid images that come to mind. But just because the first images of alien contact that come to mind are horrific, that doesn't mean they're realistic."

By 2018, METI International hopes to begin sending messages into space. This immediately presents a host of problems, such as: how do you design a message for a species that is totally unfamiliar with any language on Earth?

Over the last 50 years, a number of solutions to this problem have been proposed, ranging from full-fledged mathematical languages to rudimentary chatbots, music, or pictograms. For the most part, SETI scientists are in agreement that the message will have to be strongly rooted in mathematics and physics, since these are likely to be the only two types of knowledge we have in common with the ET. METI International is also taking this approach.

"Some of the most prominent messages of the past have tried to cover everything," Vakoch said. "We're taking the opposite approach. Rather than trying to communicate everything [about math, science and life on Earth], we are focusing on saying a few things very clearly. For our first messages, we are emphasizing the essentials of math and physics."

Another point of consideration is where to send a message. Every year, astronomers are discovering more planets orbiting other stars in the so-called habitable zone. This means the planet is just far away from its host star to host liquid water without it evaporating or completely freezing. Vakoch said METI International will be targeting nearby stars, especially those known to have planets in the habitable zones.

Finally there's the question of what the message should say. Here too, history has seen a wide variety of answers. At this point, we've sent a Doritos commercial, the molecular formula for alcohol (accompanied with "Cheers!" of course), and a bunch of Craigslist classified ads to other solar systems, as well as more scientifically rigorous messages in which we've attempted to teach an alien recipient about math, science, and life on Earth.

The question of who gets to speak for Earth is a tricky one, especially given the contentious nature of the METI project as a whole. But for now, Vakoch and his colleagues are focused on figuring out how to communicate with aliens so that when we get that first "Hello," we won't be left speechless.

"Many of our most severe problems on Earth today are due to a focus on immediate gratification," Vakoch said. "If future generations of SETI researchers are looking for replies to today's transmissions, committed to a multigenerational scientific project, the very act of continuing to look will be a success in itself, whether or not they ever find life out there."

Former head of secret UFO-hunting program thinks aliens are real

The former head of the Pentagon’s secret, $22 million UFO-hunting program says aliens may have visited Earth.

“My personal belief is that there is very compelling evidence that we may not be alone,” Luis Elizondo, former leader of the so-called Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, told CNN on Monday night, noting he does not speak for the federal government.

The program ran from 2008 to 2012, when the Department of Defense investigated eerie reports from military air personnel and commercial pilots about strange objects they’d seen in the sky.

Elizondo argued Monday that the aerial stunts the UFOs performed — such as hovering without any sign of propulsion — are beyond the reach of human technology and were “seemingly defying the laws of aerodynamics.”

“These aircraft — we’ll call them aircraft — are displaying characteristics that are not currently within the US inventory nor in any foreign inventory that we are aware of,” he said.

And even if human vessels could pull off such moves, our frail earthling bodies would likely be crushed under the ensuing G-force, he added.

“We have identified some very interesting, anomalous type of aircraft — we’ll call them aircraft: things that don’t have any obvious flight services, any obvious forms of propulsion, and maneuvering in ways that include extreme maneuverability beyond, I would submit, the healthy G-forces of a human or anything biological,” Elizondo said.

After the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program was dismantled, many employees were simply shifted to different areas of the Pentagon — and they still hunt for flying saucers part time.

Elizondo left the federal government and does work for the research group To The Stars Academy of Arts and Sciences, a group founded by the former singer and guitarist from the rock band Blink-182, Tom DeLonge.

Did another advanced species exist on Earth before humans?

Our Milky Way galaxy contains tens of billions of potentially habitable planets, but we have no idea whether we're alone. For now Earth is the only world known to harbor life, and among all the living things on our planet we assume Homo sapiens is the only species ever to have developed advanced technology.

But maybe that's assuming too much.

In a mind-bending new paper entitled "The Silurian Hypothesis" — a reference to an ancient race of brainy reptiles featured in the British science fiction show "Doctor Who" — scientists at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the University of Rochester take a critical look at the scientific evidence that ours is the only advanced civilization ever to have existed on our planet.

"Do we really know we were the first technological species on Earth?" asks Adam Frank, a professor of physics and astronomy at Rochester and a co-author of the paper. "We've had an industrial society for only about 300 years, but there's been complex life on land for nearly 400 million years."

If humans went extinct today, Frank says, any future civilization that might arise on Earth millions of years hence might find it hard to recognize traces of human civilization. By the same token, if some earlier civilization existed on Earth millions of years ago, we might have trouble finding evidence of it.
In search of lizard people

The discovery of physical artifacts would certainly be the most dramatic evidence of a Silurian-style civilization on Earth, but Frank doubts we'll ever find anything of the sort.

"Our cities cover less than one percent of the surface," he says. Any comparable cities from an earlier civilization would be easy for modern-day paleontologists to miss. And no one should count on finding a Jurassic iPhone; it wouldn't last millions of years, Gorilla Glass or no.

Finding fossilized bones is a slightly better bet, but if another advanced species walked the Earth millions of years ago — if they walked — it would be easy to overlook their fossilized skeletons — if they had skeletons. Modern humans have been around for just 100,000 years, a thin sliver of time within the vast and spotty fossil record.

For these reasons, Frank and Gavin Schmidt, a climatologist at Goddard and the paper's co-author, focus on the possibility of finding chemical relics of an ancient terrestrial civilization.

Using human technology as their guide, Schmidt and Frank suggest zeroing in on plastics and other long-lived synthetic molecules as well as radioactive fallout (in case factions of ancient lizard people waged atomic warfare). In our case, technological development has been accompanied by widespread extinctions and rapid environmental changes, so those are red flags as well.

After reviewing several suspiciously abrupt geologic events of the past 380 million years, the researchers conclude that none of them clearly fit a technological profile. Frank calls for more research, such as studying how modern industrial chemicals persist in ocean sediments and then seeing if we can find traces of similar chemicals in the geologic record.

He argues that a deeper understanding of the human environmental footprint will also have practical consequences, helping us recognize better ways to achieve a long-term balance with the planet so we don't end up as tomorrow's forgotten species.

Then again, he's also a curious guy who's interested in exploring more far-out ideas for finding Silurian-style signatures: "You could try looking on the moon," he says.
Lunar archaeology

The moon is a favored target of Penn State University astronomer Jason Wright, one of a handful of other researchers now applying serious scientific thinking to the possibility of pre-human technological civilizations.

"Habitable planets like Earth are pretty good at destroying unmaintained things on their surfaces," Wright says. So he's been looking at the exotic possibility that such a civilization might have been a spacefaring one. If so, artifacts of their technology, or technosignatures, might be found elsewhere in the solar system.

Wright suggests looking for such artifacts not just on the lunar surface, but also on asteroids or buried on Mars — places where such objects could theoretically survive for hundreds of millions or even billions of years.

SpaceX's recent launch of a Tesla Roadster into space offers an insight into how such a search might go. Several astronomers pointed their telescopes at the car and showed that, even if you had no idea what you were looking at, you'd still quickly pick it out as one weird-looking asteroid.

Finding technosignatures in space is an extreme long shot, but Wright argues that the effort is worthwhile. "There are lots of other reasons to find peculiar structures on Mars and the moon, and to look for weird asteroids," he says. Such studies might reveal new details about the history and evolution of the solar system, for instance, or about resources that might be useful to future spacefarers.

If the efforts turn up a big black obelisk somewhere, so much the better.

The Aliens Beneath the Waves

There's something creepily fascinating about octopuses: the eyes, the beaks, the tentacles, the suckers. But who knew they came from outer space?

Octopuses are aliens. That’s the claim being made by a team of 33 researchers published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. They are not referring to aliens in a metaphorical sense, but literal aliens from outer space. Since the paper was released on Sunday, a trickle of news coverage has turned into a torrent, with increasingly alarming headlines about octopuses and their extra-terrestrial origins.

It will not come as a surprise to many to learn that these claims have been roundly mocked by the scientific community, who have branded the paper – published in Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology – as ridiculous and unscientific.

Yeah, well fooey on that. They laughed at Galileo, didn't they?

What are the claims being made?

They suggest the Cambrian explosion, a sudden burst of life that occurred around 540 million years ago, was the result of extra-terrestrial intervention. The paper asks whether this event, which saw the rapid emergence of most of the main animal groups that still exist on Earth today, was “terrestrial or cosmic”. Their conclusion is the latter.

How do the scientists suggest this would work?

Specifically, the researchers propose the idea that alien viruses crashed to Earth in a meteor, infected a population of primitive squid and caused them to evolve into octopuses. Another theory they suggest is that fertilised squid or octopus eggs were delivered to Earth by a meteor.

Why do the researchers look at the octopus in particular?

Octopuses are weird. They are molluscs, meaning they are closely related to snails, and yet they are incredibly intelligent. On top of their large brains and sophisticated nervous systems, the authors of the new paper list camera-like eyes, flexible bodies and ability to camouflage themselves by changing colour and shape as evidence of their extra-terrestrial origins.

So suddenly did these features appear in the octopus family tree that “it is plausible then to suggest they seem to be borrowed from a far distant ‘future’ in terms of terrestrial evolution, or more realistically from the cosmos at large,” the authors write.

I mean, come on: not even Darwin could have thought these critters up:

Here come the naysayers:

What reason is there to doubt the claims being made in the paper?

There are plenty of reasons. First off, as Mark Carnall from the Oxford University Museum of Natural History pointed out in a series of tweets, not one of the paper’s authors is a zoologist. Much of the authors’ speculation rests on the idea that the genetics of octopuses and their relatives are mysterious – yet a 2015 paper published in Nature revealed the octopus genome, so this is rather disingenuous.

In fact, octopus genes suggest they fit into the generally understood theory of the evolution of life on Earth, and require no alien invasion. They are thought to have split from the squid lineage around 135 million years ago.

Molecular geneticist Professor Karin Moelling of the Max Planck Institute Molecular Genetics, who was asked to review the report, concluded that it "cannot be taken seriously." The primary reason for doubt given by Professor Moelling is that there is “no evidence at all."

Ex-NASA physics professor claims 'many governments' have covered up alien encounters and says humanity must 'face the possibility' UFO sightings really ARE alien craft

A physics professor from University at Albany, State University of New York and former NASA researcher believes there is 'plenty of evidence to support UFOs'
He believes skepticism around UFOs prevents serious scientific research
Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Ecuador, France, New Zealand, Russia, Sweden and the United Kingdom have been declassifying their UFO files since 2008

Are we alone? Unfortunately, neither of the answers feel satisfactory.

To be alone in this vast universe is a lonely prospect.

On the other hand, if we are not alone and there is someone or something more powerful out there, that too is terrifying.

As a NASA research scientist and now a professor of physics, I attended the 2002 NASA Contact Conference, which focused on serious speculation about extraterrestrials.

During the meeting a concerned participant said loudly in a sinister tone, 'You have absolutely no idea what is out there!'

The silence was palpable as the truth of this statement sunk in.

Humans are fearful of extraterrestrials visiting Earth. Perhaps fortunately, the distances between the stars are prohibitively vast.

At least this is what we novices, who are just learning to travel into space, tell ourselves.

I have always been interested in UFOs. Of course, there was the excitement that there could be aliens and other living worlds.

But more exciting to me was the possibility that interstellar travel was technologically achievable.

In 1988, during my second week of graduate school at Montana State University, several students and I were discussing a recent cattle mutilation that was associated with UFOs.

A physics professor joined the conversation and told us that he had colleagues working at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Montana, where they were having problems with UFOs shutting down nuclear missiles.

At the time I thought this professor was talking nonsense. But 20 years later, I was stunned to see a recording of a press conference featuring several former US Air Force personnel, with a couple from Malmstrom AFB, describing similar occurrences in the 1960s. Clearly there must be something to this.

With July 2 being World UFO Day, it is a good time for society to address the unsettling and refreshing fact we may not be alone.

I believe we need to face the possibility that some of the strange flying objects that outperform the best aircraft in our inventory and defy explanation may indeed be visitors from afar – and there's plenty of evidence to support UFO sightings.

The nuclear physicist Enrico Fermi was famous for posing thought provoking questions.

In 1950, at Los Alamos National Laboratory after discussing UFOs over lunch, Fermi asked, 'Where is everybody?'

He estimated there were about 300 billion stars in the galaxy, many of them billions of years older than the sun, with a large percentage of them likely to host habitable planets.

Even if intelligent life developed on a very small percentage of these planets, then there should be a number of intelligent civilizations in the galaxy.

Depending on the assumptions, one should expect anywhere from tens to tens of thousands of civilizations.

With the rocket-based technologies that we have developed for space travel, it would take between 5 and 50 million years for a civilization like ours to colonize our Milky Way galaxy.

Since this should have happened several times already in the history of our galaxy, one should wonder where is the evidence of these civilizations?

This discrepancy between the expectation that there should be evidence of alien civilizations or visitations and the presumption that no visitations have been observed has been dubbed the Fermi Paradox.

Carl Sagan correctly summarized the situation by saying that 'extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.'

The problem is that there has been no single well-documented UFO encounter that would alone qualify as the smoking gun.

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that many governments around the world have covered up and classified information about such encounters.

But there are enough scraps of evidence that suggest that the problem needs to be open to scientific study.

When it comes to science, the scientific method requires hypotheses to be testable so that inferences can be verified.

UFO encounters are neither controllable nor repeatable, which makes their study extremely challenging. But the real problem, in my view, is that the UFO topic is taboo.

While the general public has been fascinated with UFOs for decades, our governments, scientists and media, have essentially declared that of all the UFO sightings are a result of weather phenomenon or human actions.

None are actually extraterrestrial spacecraft.

And no aliens have visited Earth.

Essentially, we are told that the topic is nonsense.

UFOs are off-limits to serious scientific study and rational discussion, which unfortunately leaves the topic in the domain of fringe and pseudoscientists, many of whom litter the field with conspiracy theories and wild speculation.

I think UFO skepticism has become something of a religion with an agenda, discounting the possibility of extraterrestrials without scientific evidence, while often providing silly hypotheses describing only one or two aspects of a UFO encounter reinforcing the popular belief that there is a conspiracy.

A scientist must consider all of the possible hypotheses that explain all of the data, and since little is known, the extraterrestrial hypothesis cannot yet be ruled out.

In the end, the skeptics often do science a disservice by providing a poor example of how science is to be conducted. The fact is that many of these encounters – still a very small percentage of the total – defy conventional explanation.

The media amplifies the skepticism by publishing information about UFOs when it is exciting, but always with a mocking or whimsical tone and reassuring the public that it can't possibly be true.

But there are credible witnesses and encounters.

I am often asked by friends and colleagues, 'Why don't astronomers see UFOs?' The fact is that they do.

In 1977, Peter Sturrock, a professor of space science and astrophysics at Stanford University, mailed 2,611 questionnaires about UFO sightings to members of the American Astronomical Society.

He received 1,356 responses from which 62 astronomers – 4.6 percent – reported witnessing or recording inexplicable aerial phenomena. This rate is similar to the approximately 5 percent of UFO sightings that are never explained.

As expected, Sturrock found that astronomers who witnessed UFOs were more likely to be night sky observers. Over 80 percent of Sturrock's respondents were willing to study the UFO phenomenon if there was a way to do so.

More than half of them felt that the topic deserves to be studied versus 20 percent who felt that it should not. The survey also revealed that younger scientists were more likely to support the study of UFOs.

UFOs have been observed through telescopes. I know of one telescope sighting by an experienced amateur astronomer in which he observed an object shaped like a guitar pick moving through the telescope's field of view.

Further sightings are documented in the book 'Wonders in the Sky,' in which the authors compile numerous observations of unexplained aerial phenomena made by astronomers and published in scientific journals throughout the 1700s and 1800s.

Some of the most convincing observations have come from government officials. In 1997, the Chilean government formed the organization Comité de Estudios de Fenómenos Aéreos Anómalos, or CEFAA, to study UFOs.

Last year, CEFAA released footage of a UFO taken with a helicopter-mounted Wescam infrared camera.

The countries of Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Ecuador, France, New Zealand, Russia, Sweden and the United Kingdom have been declassifying their UFO files since 2008.

The French Committee for In-Depth Studies, or COMETA, was an unofficial UFO study group comprised of high-ranking scientists and military officials that studied UFOs in the late 1990s.

They released the COMETA Report, which summarized their findings. They concluded that 5 percent of the encounters were reliable yet inexplicable: The best hypothesis available was that the observed craft were extraterrestrial. They also accused the United States of covering up evidence of UFOs.

Iran has been concerned about spherical UFOs observed near nuclear power facilities that they call 'CIA drones' which reportedly are about 30 feet in diameter, can achieve speeds up to Mach 10, and can leave the atmosphere.

Such speeds are on par with the fastest experimental aircraft, but unthinkable for a sphere without lift surfaces or an obvious propulsion mechanism.

In December 2017, The New York Times broke a story about the classified Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, which was a $22 million program run by the former Pentagon official Luis Elizondo and aimed at studying UFOs.

Elizondo resigned from running the program protesting extreme secrecy and the lack of funding and support.

Following his resignation Elizondo, along with several others from the defense and intelligence community, were recruited by the To the Stars Academy of Arts & Science, which was recently founded by Tom DeLonge to study UFOs and interstellar travel.

In conjunction with the launch of the academy, the Pentagon declassified and released three videos of UFO encounters taken with forward looking infrared cameras mounted on F-18 fighter jets.

While there is much excitement about such disclosures, I am reminded of a quote from Retired Army Colonel John Alexander: 'Disclosure has happened. … I've got stacks of generals, including Soviet generals, who've come out and said UFOs are real. My point is, how many times do senior officials need to come forward and say that this is real?'

There is a great deal of evidence that a small percentage of these UFO sightings are unidentified structured craft exhibiting flight capabilities beyond any known human technology.

While there is no single case for which there exists evidence that would stand up to scientific rigor, there are cases with simultaneous observations by multiple reliable witnesses, along with radar returns and photographic evidence revealing patterns of activity that are compelling.

Declassified information from covert studies is interesting, but not scientifically helpful.

This is a topic worthy of open scientific inquiry, until there is a scientific consensus based on evidence rather than prior expectation or belief.

If there are indeed extraterrestrial craft visiting Earth, it would greatly benefit us to know about them, their nature and their intent.

Moreover, this would present a great opportunity for mankind, promising to expand and advance our knowledge and technology, as well as reshaping our understanding of our place in the universe.
