US to temporarily shut down embassies around the world Sunday amid security concerns
8/2/13

The United States will temporarily shut down its embassies and consulates around the world Sunday -- including those in Iraq, Afghanistan and Egypt -- as a precautionary measure over terror-related concerns, State Department officials said.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf did not say how long the international installations would stay closed -- only that the decision was taken “out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting.” Officials would not describe the nature of the threat.

Sunday is a normal workday in many Arab and Middle Eastern countries, meaning that is where the closures will have an impact. Embassies in Europe and Latin America would be shuttered that day anyway.

“We have instructed all U.S. embassies and consulates that would have normally been open on Sunday to suspend operations, specifically on August 4,” a senior State Department official said Thursday night. “It is possible we may have additional days of closing as well.”

Other U.S. officials said the threat was specifically in the Muslim world.

The issue of security abroad has been prominent since the attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, and a string of demonstrations on other U.S. embassies in the Middle East and North Africa.

On Thursday, measures to beef up security at U.S. embassies were passed out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The bill is in response to the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, where Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

The Senate bill creates a training center for diplomatic security personnel.

Separately, the House Foreign Affairs Committee authorized full security funding for diplomatic missions -- despite recommending a nine percent cut overall for State Department operations.

The House and Senate have already approved spending bills that cover embassy security. But their budgets differ markedly in other areas.

Update: Travel alert issued through Aug. 31 - @NBCNews

The United States on Friday issued a worldwide travel alert to all Americans through Aug. 31 due to an unspecified al-Qaeda threat that led to embassy closures.

“The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula,” it said.

“Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August.  This Travel Alert expires on August 31, 2013.”

The alert was issued after the U.S. said that all Americans embassies and consulates that normally open on a Sunday would close on Aug. 4 because of a possible al Qaeda-related threat. A senior State Department official warned they could remain shut for an extended period.

At least 18 diplomatic posts were affected by the closure, with most posting details of the shutdowns on their websites.

The officials said the threat appeared to be related to al-Qaeda and tied to Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, which ends Wednesday.

It was aimed at overseas diplomatic posts, not at facilities inside the U.S., they said.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said the U.S. has been "apprised of information that out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting our installations, that indicates we should institute these precautionary steps.”

The senior State Department official said “we have instructed all U.S. Embassies and Consulates that would have normally been open on Sunday to suspend operations, specifically on August 4th.”

“It is possible we may have additional days of closing as well … The department, when conditions warrant, takes steps like this to balance our continued operations with security and safety,” the official added.

Notices on several embassies’ websites pointed to a “Worldwide Caution” issued by the State Department on Feb. 19 for further information.

“Credible information indicates terrorist groups … seek to continue attacks against U.S. interests in the Middle East and North Africa,” it said. “The U.S. government remains highly concerned about possible attacks against U.S. citizens, facilities, businesses, and perceived U.S. and Western interests.”

Sunday is a normal workday in Muslim countries and Israel.

The embassies and consulates due to close Sunday include: Algiers, Algeria, Sana'a, Yemen; Tel Aviv, Israel; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Dhaka, Bangladesh; Kuwait City, Kuwait; Ankara, Turkey; Muscat, Oman; Doha, Qatar; Cairo, Egypt; Kabul, Afghanistan; Baghdad, Iraq; Amman, Jordan; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Manama, Bahrain; Tripoli, Libya; Nouakchott, Mauritania; and Doha, Qatar.

Harf, who didn't say which or how many embassies would be closed, did not reveal what kind of information led to the decision.

She said they could be closed for a longer period "depending on our analysis."

Sunday is President Barack Obama's 52nd birthday, and it's also the day Iran inaugurates Hassan Rowhani as its new president.

But U.S. officials told NBC News they had heard nothing to indicate that the date was chosen for either of those reasons.

wonder what they have planned

Some people are keeping an eye on this as possibly related. The timing is not good.

Thousands of members of the armed forces including members of the Indiana National Guard are participating in mass disaster training in Jennings County.

Exercise Vibrant Response is in full effect at the Muscatatuck training camp and Camp Atterbury in Johnson County.

More than 5,000 members of the military and civilians from across the country are taking part in the two-week, large-scale disaster response exercise. The scenario is a nuclear terrorist attack in Columbus, Ohio—and the backdrop is as close to the real thing as it gets.

About 200 medical mannequins and 300 live role players are part of the exercise– helping to train those involved.

“They train these soldiers, they challenge them and the things they do have been experienced in every large-scale disaster response,” said Brig. Gen. Brian Copes with the Indiana National Guard.

The training will wrap up August 17.

There’s also the Snowden case. It’s possibly straining relations between US and Russia, The Army seems to think it’s important enough to order their personnel to NOT visit the UK Guardian website.

A major disaster, complete with mayhem, real or staged, would be awfully convenient for distracting the American public right about now.

What I meant was what was posted in the news article in the OP - when I turned to CNN at the top of the hour, they were talking about just that.

As for Obama needing a "distraction" from his "scandals" - to be frank...1) It seems like his puppetmasters still want him in there, so these "scandals" are nothing but sideshows anyways, and 2) If anything, his "scandals" have all but distracted the MSM from doing reports over the immigration bill, among other things, (which is worse than Obamacare, BTW) Congress is currently debating over.

Very wise observation. Sums up what to expect from the world very nicely. They cannot be trusted, at all.

And yes, evidence shows Al Qaeda is an idea, of the US CIA. It's vapor terror by a ghost.

Interpol issues global security alert, cites jailbreaks across Mideast

On heels of US’ terror warning, France, Germany, and Britain to close embassies in Yemen for several days

By Michal Shmulovich and AP August 3, 2013, 7:52 pm

Interpol on Saturday issued an alert advising its 190 members to step up their vigilance against possible terror attacks after a series of recent prison breaks from Libya, Iraq, and Pakistan and six other countries that involve hundreds of terrorists and other criminals. The agency said al-Qaeda may have been involved in some of the incidents, and that it was trying to determine if the different events were somehow linked.

In a statement, the France-based international criminal police agency requested that its members “closely follow and swiftly process any information linked to these events and the escaped prisoners.” It also cited the anniversaries of terror attacks and referenced a similar security alert put out by the US State Department on Friday.

Interpol noted that it issues such alerts fairly regularly — the last one being 10 days ago, following jailbreaks from Iraq’s infamous Abu Ghraib prison and the Taji prison near Baghdad.

On Friday, the US issued an extraordinary global travel warning to Americans about the threat of an al-Qaeda attack and closed down 21 embassies and consulates across the Muslim world for the weekend. The US Embassy in Tel Aviv is one of more than 20 legations in the Middle East and North Africa being kept closed on Sunday.

The alert was the first of its kind since an announcement preceding the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Also citing security concerns, France on Saturday said it would close its embassy in Yemen on Sunday and Monday. Britain and Germany followed suit.

“We are informed directly and indirectly of threats concerning our installations overseas and even our nationals, threats coming from al- Qaeda,” French President Francois Hollande said in a statement. ”I have already decided to close the French embassy in Yemen because there we have elements suggesting extremely serious threats. … So this embassy will be closed for several days.”

Threats against embassies 'very reminiscent' of pre-9/11 chatter

The threats that led to the U.S. closing almost two dozen embassies abroad this weekend is based on intelligence that is reminiscent of the "chatter" preceding the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a top senator on intelligence matters said Sunday.

"The one thing we can talk about is the fact that there's been an awful lot of chatter out there," Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., the ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." He said the chatter is "very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11."

The United States has closed more than 20 embassies for the weekend, mostly in north Africa and the Middle East, in response to unspecified intelligence assessments about a mounting terrorist threat. Lawmakers offered their first glimpse of the seriousness of the threat in their public comments on Sunday.

"This specific threat, that we've been briefed about over and over again, have reached a new level," said Sen. Richard Durbin, Ill., the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate. Durbin said on Meet the Press that Vice President Joe Biden briefed him and other senators this week, during which the administration identified 25 embassies overseas that are particularly vulnerable.

"This is the most serious threat that I've seen in the last several years," said Chambliss.

President Barack Obama has been briefed throughout the weekend about the evolving threat, most recently on Saturday, when he met with counterterrorism adviser Lisa Monaco. The White House said that Obama would continue to receive briefings throughout the weekend.

The sweeping security precautions, in some ways, represent the lessons learned from the attack against a U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya less than a year ago.

In that attack, suspected terrorists sieged a compound in Benghazi and killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Critics of Obama, mostly Republicans, have vocally complained that the administration was caught flat-footed by those attacks, accusing the White House of having suffered an intelligence failure.

The period of heightened alert coincides with the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Aug. 7 also marks the 15-year anniversary of the deadly, coordinated attacks against U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998.

State Department to keep some embassies closed, as lawmakers say terror threat 'specific’ and ‘serious'
8/4/13

The State Department has announced that it will keep several embassies in the Middle East and Africa closed throughout the week “out of an abundance of caution” in the wake of terror threats that shut them down.

Posts in Abu Dhabi, Amman, Cairo, Riyadh, Dhahran, Jeddah, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait, Manama, Muscat, Sanaa, Tripoli, Antanarivo, Bujumbura, Djibouti, Khartoum, Kigali and Port Louis have been instructed to close for normal operations from Monday through Saturday, department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

The State Department also said some of those embassies were already going to be closed in accordance with local customs marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Those authorized to reopen Monday are in Dhaka, Algiers, Nouakchott, Kabul, Herat, Mazar el Sharif, Baghdad, Basrah and Erbil.

Capitol Hill lawmakers, including top-ranking members of intelligence committees, on Sunday described the terror threat that closed 22 U.S. embassies and consulates across the Muslim region as the most serious one since before the 9/11 attacks and related to specific act or plot.

Florida Republican Rep. Tom Rooney, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, told Fox News that U.S. intelligence agents detected a “very specific” threat and suggested they have known about it for at least several weeks.

He was among several congressional lawmakers Sunday who said the threat was gleaned from so-called “chatter” from phone lines, computer outlets, websites and other communication outlets.

Rooney also said the information is not what intelligence committee members “see on our regular briefings.”

The Obama administration’s decision Friday to close the U.S. outposts Sunday came the same day as the State Department issued a worldwide travel alert.

Rooney suggested Sunday the travel warning will not be lifted soon.

“If I had plans to travel to certain places in the Middle East, I would probably go ahead and cancel them,” he said.

Rooney's comments followed Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, telling NBC’s “Meet the Press" that the threats are "very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11."

He also described the threats as “the most serious … I've seen in a number of years.”

Sources confirmed with Fox News the chatter was picked up over the past two weeks and exceeds anything in the past decade. They also said the extraordinary volume of chatter was preceded by months of “absolute quietness.”

The sources said the chatter included Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri demanding that key leaders of the terror network in the Arabian Peninsula step up their activities in the wake of recent killings of top terrorists.

A Mideast diplomat said al-Zawahiri’s “pressuring” of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to launch new terrorist attacks on American and other Western targets is “unprecedented.”

The sources also said the U.S. outpost closings and the travel alert were prompted in part by a series of recent Al Qaeda-led prison breaks that have freed hundreds of operatives over the last month, including one this weekend in Aleppo, Syria. Other recent breaks have been orchestrated in Iraq, Libya and Pakistan and Abu Ghraib, in Afghanistan.

Maryland Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, also said the intercepted threats came from "high-level people” in Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

He told ABC’s “This Week” the information was about a “major attack."

Yemen is home to Al Qaeda's most dangerous affiliate, blamed for several notable terrorist plots on the United States. They include the foiled Christmas Day 2009 effort to bomb an airliner over Detroit and the explosives-laden parcels intercepted the following year aboard cargo flights.

New York Republican Rep. Pete King, who leads the House Homeland Security subcommittee on counterterrorism and intelligence, said the threat included dates but not locations of possible attacks.

"The threat was specific as to how enormous it was going to be and also that certain dates were given," he said on ABC.

Rep. Adam Schiff, a House Intelligence Committee member, said the "breadth" of the closures suggests U.S. authorities are concerned about a potential repeat of last year's riots and attacks at multiple embassies, including the deadly assault in Benghazi, Libya, in which the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed.

In addition, Interpol, the French-based international policy agency, has issued a global security alert in connection with suspected Al Qaeda involvement in the recent prison escapes.

Schiff also said the breaks add to the concerns about an attack and noted the approaching end of Ramadan.

"So you have a lot things coming together,” he said. “But all of that would not be enough without having some particularly specific information," he said.

The administration’s announcements Friday said the Al Qaeda network might target either U.S. government or private American interests.

The intelligence intercepts also prompted Britain, Germany and France to close their embassies in Yemen on Sunday and Monday. British authorities said some embassy staff in Yemen had been withdrawn "due to security concerns."

Canada also announced it was closing its embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

'Significant' al Qaeda threat remains unclear as embassy closures extended

Top U.S. officials on Sunday said the exact nature of the suspected al Qaeda threat that temporarily shuttered key U.S. diplomatic posts across the Middle East and North Africa remains unclear, and that intelligence suggests the "significant" event could mean either one large attack or simultaneous attacks across the globe.

Meanwhile, officials late Sunday said 19 embassies and consulates would remain closed through next Saturday.

Officials told NBC News that the threat appears to be linked to Yemen, but State Department spokespeople have only confirmed that the warnings are generally tied to al Qaeda.

Yemen is home to perhaps the most dangerous terror network affiliate, known as al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). The lethal wing is considered responsible for several terrorist strikes on the United States, including the foiled Christmas Day 2009 attempt to bomb an airplane over Detroit.

One-third of shuttered US diplomatic posts reopen; other closures extended

Quote
About one-third the U.S. diplomatic posts that were temporarily shuttered due to a "serious threat" of al Qaeda attack reopened on Monday, hours after officials extended closures at 15 others through Saturday and shut four more.

Nine embassies and consulates opened their doors again, but a further 19 would be closed through Saturday “out of an abundance of caution,” the State Department said.

“This is not an indication of a new threat stream, merely an indication of our commitment to exercise caution and take appropriate steps to protect our employees including local employees and visitors to our facilities,” the State Department said in a statement late Sunday.

State Dept. orders evacuation of embassy in Yemen

The State Department on Tuesday ordered the U.S. Embassy in Yemen evacuated as a result of the threat by al-Qaida that has triggered temporary shutdowns of 19 American diplomatic posts across the Middle East and Africa.

The department said in a travel warning that it had ordered the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel from Yemen "due to the continued potential for terrorist attacks" and said U.S. citizens in Yemen should leave immediately because of an "extremely high" security threat level.

"U.S. citizens currently in Yemen should depart. As staff levels at the Embassy are restricted, our ability to assist U.S. citizens in an emergency and provide routine consular services remains limited and may be further constrained by the fluid security situation," the travel warning said.

The U.S. Embassy is located in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.

A U.S. intelligence official and a Mideast diplomat told The Associated Press that the current shutdown of embassies in the Middle East and Africa was instigated by an intercepted secret message between al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahri and Nasser al-Wahishi, the leader of the Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, about plans for a major terror attack. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

AQAP has been widely considered al-Qaida's most dangerous affiliate for several years.

Even though the group lost Anwar al-Awlaki _ one of its key inspirational leaders _ to a U.S. drone strike in 2011, al-Wahishi and the group's master bomb maker, Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri, remain on the loose and determined to target the U.S. and other Western interests.

The group is linked to the botched Christmas Day 2009 bombing of an airliner bound for Detroit and explosives-laden parcels intercepted aboard cargo flights a year later _ both incidents involving al-Asiri's expertise.

"Terrorist organizations, including AQAP, continue to be active throughout Yemen," the travel warning said. "The U.S. government remains highly concerned about possible attacks on U.S. citizens (whether visiting or residing in Yemen), and U.S. facilities, businesses and perceived U.S. and Western interests."

Drone strikes kill militants in Yemen; Americans urged to leave

A pair of suspected U.S. drone strikes killed four al Qaeda militants in Yemen as the United States maintained a heightened security alert in the country and urged all Americans to leave immediately.

Security sources told CNN about the strikes but didn't offer additional details. A Yemeni official said four drone strikes have been carried out in the past 10 days.

None of those killed on Tuesday were among the 25 names on the country's most-wanted list, security officials said.

It is unclear whether the strikes were related to the added security alert in the country after U.S. officials intercepted a message from al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri to operatives in Yemen telling them to "do something." The message was sent to Nasir al-Wuhayshi, the leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the terror group's Yemeni affiliate. U.S. intelligence believes al-Wuhayshi has recently been appointed the overall terror organization's No. 2 leader.

Also Tuesday, the State Department urged Americans in Yemen to leave immediately, citing terrorist activities and civil unrest. All non-emergency U.S. government personnel were also told to leave.

Two U.S. military transport aircraft landed in Yemen on Tuesday to evacuate American citizens.

"In response to a request from the U.S. State Department, early this morning the U.S. Air Force transported personnel out of Sana'a, Yemen, as part of a reduction in emergency personnel," Pentagon press secretary George Little said in a statement.

Little also said, "The U.S. Department of Defense continues to have personnel on the ground in Yemen to support the U.S. State Department and monitor the security situation."

The UK Foreign Office also announced it had temporarily withdrawn all staff from the British embassy and would keep the facility shut until employees are able to return.

Washington takes precautions

Acting on the intelligence information, the United States heightened its security stance, issuing a worldwide travel alert and closing a number of embassies and consulates over large areas of the Middle East and Africa this week.

List of U.S. embassies and consulates closed this week

The State Department said the substantial security steps reflect an "abundance of caution" over intelligence information that indicated final planning by al Qaeda in Yemen for possible terrorist attacks on Western targets to coincide with the end of Ramadan this week.

Three sources told CNN that the United States has information that members of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula are in the final stages of planning for an unspecified attack. Recent jailbreaks in Pakistan, Iraq and Libya all have the fingerprints of al Qaeda operations.

Prison breaks are among reasons for heightened security

On Monday, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that U.S. anti-terrorism efforts had decimated al Qaeda's global leadership and greatly diminished its core in Afghanistan and Pakistan, saying the threat had "shifted to some of these affiliates, in particular AQAP."

Separately, American special forces units overseas have been on alert for the past several days awaiting a mission to attack potential al Qaeda targets if those behind the most recent terror threats against U.S. interests can be identified, a senior Obama administration official told CNN.

The official declined to identify the units or their locations because of the sensitive nature of the information. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel put the units on alert last week, the official said.

This whole embassy closer thing is a distraction from all of Obama's scandals especially the spying one. Now as people start to realize that, we attack Yemen.

Do you think there's any credence to the You Tubers theories that the shut downs and "intelligence of terrorist threats" as really just being part of a set up for a false flag attack?

Hard to say - as Obama is in his lame duck session anyways, so any "scandals" won't exactly hurt him, especially with all of the opposition-controlled GOP members in Congress doing their best to keep them under control(ie-John McCain has been sticking up for him). As for his "scandals", no different from the other previous Presidents' in their respective lame duck sessions.

If anything, his "scandals" have been a distraction against other things like the immigration bill(which has gotten little MSM coverage).

Do you think there's any credence to the You Tubers theories that the shut downs and "intelligence of terrorist threats" as really just being part of a set up for a false flag attack?

Hard to say - but since Obama has been in office, there's been a number of false flag rumors(ie-in Fall 2009 many thought Washington DC would get nuked b/c Obama's approval ratings were going down, and it looked like Obamacare wasn't going to pass. Then a year later in 2010, ditto, when it looked like the GOP was going to win the midterm elections). Don't remember nearly as many false flag rumors under Bush II(even though there were the terror alert levels after 9/11).

IMHO, these would probably be war rumors.

As for the REAL false flag going on now, IMHO - the legalizing of gay marriage slowly but surely across this nation(and other parts of the world as well) - while Alex Jones, Jeff Rense, Mike Rivero, and the whole "truth" movement have been putting out these false flag rumors since Obama came into office, if anything it's all but covered up other draconian agendas the Illuminati has been putting out...pushing the legalizing of gay marriage and the indoctrination of the homosexual agenda...the minute a former Ronald Reagan federal court appointee(Vaughn Walker) ruled to strike down Prop 8 3 years ago, it's been in freefall mode since. But Jones and the "truth" movement have done their part being silent about this, while the GOP/Tea Party establishments acted like there was hope to fight against this agenda and win.

As it was in the Days of Lot...

Yemen says foils plot to seize oil and gas facilities
8/7/13

SANAA (Reuters) - Yemeni security forces have foiled a plot by al Qaeda to take over oil and gas export facilities and a provincial capital in the eastern part of the country, a government official said on Wednesday.

Rajeh Badi, press advisor to Yemeni Prime Minister Mohammed Salem Basindwa, said the plan involved dozens of al Qaeda militants dressed in Yemeni army uniforms storming the facilities on the night of the 27th of Muslim month of Ramadan, which was on Sunday.

"The plot aimed to seize the al-Dabbah oil export terminal in Hadramout (province) and the Belhaf gas export facility, as well as the city of Mukalla," Badi told Reuters, referring to the Hadramout provincial capital.

He said the plot was prevented by deploying extra troops around the targeted facilities and banning anyone from entering.

The United States has evacuated some U.S. diplomatic staff out of Yemen and told nationals to leave the country immediately after warnings of potential attacks that had prompted Washington to shut missions across the Middle East.

Other Western countries, including Britain, France, the Netherlands and Norway, also closed their embassies in Sanaa and some evacuated their staff.

It was not immediately clear if the foiled plot was linked to these security measures.

Yemen, one of the poorest Arab countries, is the base for Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), one of the most active branches of the network founded by Osama bin Laden, and militants have launched attacks from there against the West.
