Saw this last year - Cloud did an excellent job exposing this. There was one time he pointed out how a KJV bible believing church changed to the NIV, and eventually the baggage of CCM came along with it.

Just finished listening to it - excellent presentation exposing CCM, and a very interesting one at that!

Yeah, CCM doesn't only use the rhythm, beats, and the personality of the music like that of the heavy metal/"hard rock" stuff. Pt being that this is how subtle CCM can be - even some of the "soft rock" stuff can sound very innocent, which is why it can be easy to get deceived when they use gospel lyrics with the rhythm and beats of the "soft rock" stuff. I've always wondered why these (opposition-controlled)pro-family groups would never expose the Beach Boys, the Beegees, etc(while they only exposed the hard rock stuff). Subtle, VERY subtle!

Also interesting to hear that homosexuality is widespread in CCM. I remember reading about this last year, but it's rather obvious that b/c CCM has rejected God, God has given them over to a reprobate mind as discussed in Romans 1.

CCM has also been described as having a feminine spirit - guess this should be no surprise as well, as from someone like myself who used to listen to a lot of this secular rock music when I was lost, over 90% of it just had this feminine feel to it...whether it was heavy metal, hard rock, soft rock, etc.

Also to add...

1) You can barely, if not at all hear the lyrics these CCM artists are singing b/c the rhythm, beats, etc are just distracting the lyrics. This is the same thing secular rock music does. With traditional hymns, you can hear them loud and clear.

2) Watch out for any occult phrases et al in their lyrics! For example, they may say stuff like "dawning of a new day" or may give reverence to the moon and stars.

3) Ultimately - it all comes down to this - either you're pleasing the Lord, or you're pleasing the flesh and the world. If you're singing traditional hymns, then ultimately you can FEEL the Holy Spirit dwelling in the place(ie-there's just an atmosphere of peace and quiet, to the point of hearing a pin drop clearly). If you're playing CCM stuff, you end up FEELING everyone in the place worked up, hollering, clapping, and ultimately the CCM artists(or whoever's playing and singing the songs) ARE the ones getting all the glory.

My church invited a local CCM group(Haynes sisters - they're only popular locally in the DFW metroplex) to perform this last weekend - and it felt just that - you could barely hear what they're singing, a lot of glory from the pews was directed at them, and they had occult phrases like "a new day dawning" and another song they reverenced the moon.

Was reading this passage yesterday...

1John 1:5  This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1Jn 1:6  If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
1Jn 1:7  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1Jn 1:8  If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1Jn 1:9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1Jn 1:10  If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Modern-day churches in America are so Apostate now, no doubt about it. But nonetheless when they bring this junk CCM in...look at verses 8 and 10, in particular - pretty much they're saying they have no sin(and hence make God a liar) when they bring this junk in, and ultimately ties back to verse 6(where they walk in darkness). Ultimately, they LIE, and do not the truth.

Christian Metal Singer Pleads Guilty in Murder for Hire

The singer of the Grammy-nominated Christian metal band As I Lay Dying pleaded guilty to his role in a murder-for-hire plot.

Carlsbad, Calif., resident Tim Lambesis entered the change of plea in court Tuesday, admitting that he hired a hit man to kill his estranged wife.

As a result of his change of plea, Lambesis will serve nine years, according to a court clerk.

The Carlsbad resident was arrested in May 2013 on charges of solicitation of another to commit murder and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Prosecutors alleged that Lambesis approached a trainer from his gym and asked if the person knew anyone who could kill his wife, Meggan Lambesis of Del Mar.

"He wanted to know if maybe I could find someone to do it for him," personal trainer Brett Kimball testified at a pretrial hearing.

Lambesis provided the undercover agent with an envelope containing $1,000 cash for expenses, his wife's address and gate codes, pictures of her and specific dates when he would have the children and thus, an alibi.

Lambesis explained he wanted his wife dead because she was going to get up to 60 percent of his income and would not allow their children — ages 4, 8, and 10 — to go on tour with him, the deputy testified.

Court documents reveal Meggan Lambesis had filed for divorce in September 2012 to end the couple's eight-year marriage.

In the divorce records obtained by The Associated Press, Meggan Lambesis claims the rocker had become "obsessed with bodybuilding" and was distracted with the children, even falling asleep once while watching them.

She also claimed he has spent thousands of dollars on tattoos.

FYI, I got this as a PDF file in my email the other day, so no link...

Contemporary Christian Music and Homosexuality
By David Cloud
March 13, 2014
In The Gospel Sound, which first appeared in 1971, Anthony Heilbut said,
“The gospel church has long been a refuge for gays and lesbians, some
of whom grew up to be among the greatest singers and musicians.”
Douglas Harrison, a homosexual who grew up Southern Baptist, said, “...
you can’t swing a Dove Award without hitting upon evidence of the
longstanding, deep-set presence of queer experience in, and its
influence on, Christian music culture at all levels” (“Come Out from among Them,”
Religion Dispatches, April 30, 2010).

In 1998, CCM star Kirk Franklin said that “homosexuality ... is a problem
today in gospel music--a MAJOR CONCERN--and everybody knows it” (Church
Boy, pp. 49, 50).

James Cleveland, who has been called the “King of Gospel,” was a
homosexual who died of AIDS.

Marsha Stevens, author of the popular song “For Those Tears I Died (Come
to the Water),” co-founded Children of the Day, one of the first contemporary Christian groups associated with
Calvary Chapel. In 1979, Marsha broke her sacred marriage vows and divorced
her husband of seven years, by whom she had two children, because she
had “fallen in love with a woman.” Eventually Marsha “married” Cindi
Stevens-Pino who she calls “my wife.” She started her own label called
BALM (Born Again Lesbian Music) and performs between 150 and 200
concerts a year. She has a program called “upBeat” through which she produces a praise and worship
album annually with a variety of singers and songwriters.

Marsha Stevens’ lesbian praise music ministry is recommended by Mark
Allen Powell, Professor of New Testament, Trinity Lutheran Seminary and the author of An Encyclopedia
of Contemporary Christian Music. He states:
“The Mother of Contemporary Christian Music continues to capture
hearts for Jesus. Argue interpretations of Scripture and debate the ethics
and origins of homosexuality all you want -- no one with sensitivity to
things of the Spirit can deny God is using Marsha Stevens to bring the
love and mercy of Christ to people whom God apparently has not
forgotten.”

To ignore the teaching of Scripture for a feeling or intuition that God is using a homosexual for His glory is blind
mysticism. And there is no question that the Bible condemns homosexuality
as a sin in no uncertain terms and demands repentance from it of those
those who come to Christ. Romans 1 condemns man on man and woman
on woman sexual relationships as “vile affections,” “against nature,”
unseemly,” and “a reprobate mind” (Romans 1:26-28). According to
Scripture, God made human sex for marriage and for marriage only, and
anything outside of that is fornication and adultery and is subject to
God’s judgment (Hebrews 13:4). From the beginning to the end of the Bible, God-ordained
marriage is defined as a holy contract between one man and one woman. Polygamy was practiced even by some of
the Old Testament saints, but Jesus taught that this was never God’s will and He referred men to God’s law at the
beginning (Matthew 19:4-6). Therefore, since all sexual activity outside of marriage is sin and since legitimate
marriage is only between a man and a woman, there is absolutely no possibility that God would bless homosexual
relationships.

Popular CCM singer Ray Boltz announced his homosexuality in 2008. He divorced his wife to live
with a man. Today he “tours the country playing at liberal churches and gay-pride events that receive him and his
gay Christian message” (Jesus Rocks the World: The Definitive History of Contemporary Christian Music, vol. 2,
p. 173).

Other homosexual CCM artists are Anthony Williams, Kirk Talley, Clay Aiken, Jennifer Knapp,
Doug Pinnock of King’s X, plus Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls.
In June 2013 Sandi Patty performed with the homosexual Turtle Creek
Chorale at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas. In July 2012 the
Chorale attended the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA) in Denver (“Turtle Creek Chorale’s
2012-2013 Season,” Turtlecreek.org).

The reason for all of this is not difficult to discern. Typically, CCM musicians have been
accepted as Christians upon the flimsiest testimony of faith and have not
been properly taught and discipled. They have fed their spiritual lives with a constant diet of
sensual music and have sought after emotional highs and “signs and wonders” instead of living by faith. They have
played with the world, which is more dangerous than any poisonous snake, instead of living separated lives. They
have sown to the wind and are reaping the whirlwind.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This has really been a giant SLEEPER within Churchianity over the many years - while they were exposing sodomy through and through, ultimately the enemy came from WITHIN!

'Jesus Christ Superstar' to tour North America

Rock musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar' to tour North America starring JC Chasez and John Lydon

4/4/14

NEW YORK (AP) -- The 1970s rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" is being resurrected for a North American tour.

It was revealed Friday that the musical written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice about the last days of Jesus will start a 50-city tour in New Orleans on June 9.

It will star punk legend John Lydon as King Herod, Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child as Mary, Brandon Boyd of Incubus as Judas and JC Chasez of 'N Sync as Pilate. Ben Forster, the winner of the U.K.'s prime-time contest show "Superstar," will play the son of God.

The guitar- and keyboard-driven musical, which debuted on Broadway in 1971, includes such songs as "What's the Buzz?" ''Superstar," ''Everything's Alright" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him." The new version is being billed as an arena rock spectacular.

The original production earned five Tony Award nominations, including one for Ben Vereen, who played Judas. A film version was released in 1973 and the last Broadway revival was staged in 2012 under the direction of Des McAnuff. Foster played Jesus in the 2012 broadcast of "Jesus Christ Superstar UK Rock Spectacular," a touring version of the musical that was taped in Birmingham, England.

The musical dramatizes Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, the unrest caused by his preaching and popularity, his betrayal by Judas, the trial before Pontius Pilate and his ultimate crucifixion. It marked an early collaboration between Lloyd Webber and Rice, who would go on to create "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and "Evita."

As I Lay Dying frontman, Tim Lambesis, was sentenced to six years in prison without probation today in a San Diego Superior courtroom for his involvement in a murder-for-hire plot directed at his then-wife, Meggan. The sentencing also prohibited contact with his two children and his ex-wife until May 2024.

The courtroom was wrought with drama, as character witnesses -- including his ex-wife, Meggan Murphy -- took to the stand to appeal to the judge to hand down the maximum sentence.

"My name used to be Meggan Lambesis. And up until two years ago, my heart was entirely devoted to him," Murphy began. "I trusted him with everything, including my life ... When the one person who you've been most vulnerable with and the most intimate with; who you've entrusted with every aspect of your life; who has not only desired but planned your murder -- you're left feeling completely exposed and unprotected. Who can I trust now? How can I feel safe?"

Murphy's mother also spoke out against Lambesis before his sentencing. "On [this past Mother's Day], I felt deep gratitude for the life of Meggan and my two sons," she said. "But was reminded again fo the unspeakable pain and loss that our family narrowly missed. There was the feeling of utter despair at the thought of having a daughter murdered, coupled with the unbearable realization that our grandchildren would have lost a mother for a second time. For me, Mother's Day will no longer be a carefree time slowly filled with lighthearted joy but will be a day that serves as a reminder that our world has forever changed with uncertainty and underlying fear because of Tim Lambesis."

The sentiment was echoed by his ex-wife: "The question of who Tim talked to or will talk to will forever haunt me. The scariest thing is Tim's notoriety. He has followers that will do anything for him. It's terrifying to think there are people out there motivated to kill me on his behalf."

She then produced a long list of vicious twitter posts directed at her from As I Lay Dying's fans.

"I'm begging you today to free us from this man who wants to end my life and orphan my children," she continued. "I'm begging you for safety and peace of mind. I do not believe Tim has changed since his arrest. In fact, he has persisted in bullying me through his lawyer's request that I do not speak in court today ... The one thing I know about Tim is that he is persistent and will not take 'no' for an answer. He will not rest until he knows he has won. I'm asking you to give him the maximum sentence in prison, as well as a lifetime restraining order from myself and my children."

Today's sentencing effectively completed the shocking fall from grace for the charismatic singer who, until his arrest in May 2013, enjoyed a successful and lucrative musical career with the locally based heavy metal band. When news of his arrest broke, it perplexed members of the local music community, including SoundDiego contributor Tim Pyles of FM 94/9.

"He’s not the idealistic young Christian kid he once was, apparently," Pyles said last spring. "Because that’s what [As I Lay Dying] are: a straight-edged Christian metal band. He was a nice guy. I’ve had him on my show a couple times over the years. I just spoke to him via Facebook the last couple months about having him come on to talk about his latest record."

As I Lay Dying formed more than a decade ago and released eight albums, including the Grammy-nominated An Ocean Between Us, which came out in 2007, according to band publicity. The band is also a mainstay of the San Diego Music Awards, nominated in 2012 for Best Hard Rock Album for Decas, winning for Best Hard Rock the year before that. In 2008, 2007 and 2005, the band took home the SDMA statuettes for Artist of the Year. As I Lay Dying were slated to go on a cross-country tour with the Massachusetts metal band Killswitch Engage until Lambesis’ arrest.

Fans of Lambesis and As I Lay Dying voiced their shock and disbelief on Twitter and Facebook after Lambesis was accused of the crime. One fan wrote, "Tim, please tell me the rumors aren’t true," and another posted, "Seems like he is the greatest guy in the world; he adopted a kid from Ethiopia."

Marsha Stevens’s lesbian praise music ministry is recommended by Mark Allen Powell, Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary and the author of An Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music. He states:

“The Mother of Contemporary Christian Music continues to capture hearts for Jesus. Argue interpretations of Scripture and debate the ethics and origins of homosexuality all you want--no one with sensitivity to things of the Spirit can deny God is using Marsha Stevens to bring the love and mercy of Christ to people whom God apparently has not forgotten.”

To ignore the teaching of Scripture for a feeling or an intuition that God is using an unrepentant homosexual for His glory is blind mysticism.

The Bible condemns homosexuality as a sin in no uncertain terms and demands repentance from it of those who come to Christ. Romans 1 condemns man-with-man and woman-with-woman sexual relationships as “vile affections,” “against nature,” unseemly,” and “a reprobate mind” (Romans 1:26-28). No amount of interpretive gymnastics by homosexual-rights activists can change the clear meaning of this passage.

According to Scripture, God made human sex for the context of marriage, and anything outside of the context of marriage is fornication and adultery and is subject to God’s judgment.

“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge” (Hebrews 13:4).

From the beginning to the end of the Bible, God-ordained marriage is defined as a holy contract between one man and one woman. Polygamy was practiced even by some of the Old Testament saints, but Jesus taught that this was never God’s will and He referred men to God’s law of marriage at the beginning.

“And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:4-6).

Since the Bible teaches that all sexual activity outside of marriage is sin, and since legitimate marriage is only between a man and a woman, there is absolutely no possibility that God would bless homosexual relationships.

Popular CCM singer Ray Boltz announced his homosexuality in 2008. He divorced his wife to live with a man. Today he “tours the country playing at liberal churches and gay-pride events that receive him and his gay Christian message” (Jesus Rocks the World: The Definitive History of Contemporary Christian Music, vol. 2, p. 173).

In July 2012, the Chorale had attended the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA) in Denver (“Turtle Creek Chorale’s 2012-2013 Season,” Turtlecreek.org).

In April 2014, Dan Haseltine of the popular CCM band Jars of Clay announced his support for “gay marriage.” He wrote the following in a series of Twitter posts:

“Not meaning to stir things up BUT… is there a non-speculative or non ‘slippery slope’ reason why gays shouldn’t marry? I don’t hear one. ... I’m trying to make sense of the conservative argument. But it doesn’t hold up to basic scrutiny. Feels akin to women’s suffrage. I just don’t see a negative effect to allowing gay marriage. No societal breakdown, no war on traditional marriage. ... I don’t think scripture ‘clearly’ states much of anything regarding morality. ... I don’t particularly care about Scriptures stance on what is ‘wrong.’ I care more about how it says we should treat people” (“Dan Haseltine,” MetroWeekly.com, April 22, 2014).

Haseltine tried to back peddle a bit after his Twitter comments were made public, but he did not renounce the concept of a “homosexual Christian” or reject same-sex “marriage.”

In August 2014, Vicky Beeching, British CCM musician, announced that she is a lesbian. Beeching, who has led worship music at many North American churches and whose “lyrics are sung by millions in America’s Bible Belt,” says, “I’m gay; God loves me just the way I am.”

“I think God has very much walked me through this, hand in hand. I do not feel I left God in back there, in the evangelical church. I feel like he’s become closer and closer. I feel I was in the desert, making this decision, and he’s been in the desert with me, that this is something he's led me towards, something I am supposed to do” (“Vicky Beeching on Coming Out,” Christian Today, Aug. 14, 2014).

She says that “the well-known Biblical texts from Leviticus, for example, should not be used to condemn ‘permanent, faithful, stable same-sex relationships.’”

Beeching, who grew up Pentecostal and is now Anglican, says that she begged God to take away her sexual attraction to females beginning when she was 13 years old, made confession to a Catholic priest, and sought deliverance through a charismatic exorcism.

The very fact that she sought help from priests and charismatic healers demonstrates that she has has looked in the wrong places for spiritual help. Spiritual victory doesn’t come by sacraments and priestcraft.

And even for those who are truly born again, God doesn’t take away the old nature in this present life. Sinful thoughts come from the “old man,” but the believer doesn’t have to act on them. Paul says that those who continue to walk in sin as a way of life demonstrate that they haven’t been born again.

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21).

The believer’s spiritual victory is described in the same passage: “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law” (Galatians 5:16-18).

In an interview in October 2014, Brian Houston, pastor of Hillsong Church in Sydney, Australia, which birthed Hillsong worship music, refused to give a definitive answer when asked to clarify his stand on “same sex marriage.” He said that “the Western world is shifting its thinking on this issue, and churches are struggling to stay relevant” (Jonathan Merritt, “Hillsong’s Brian Houston says church won’t take a public position,” Religion News Service, Oct. 16, 2014). He said, “The real issues in people’s lives are too important for us to just reduce it down to a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer in a media outlet.”

Earlier, Carl Lentz, pastor of Hillsong New York City, told CNN that Hillsong has “a lot of gay men and women in our church and I pray we always do,” and he claimed that he is “still waiting for someone to show me the quote where Jesus addressed it on the record in front of people” (“Hillsong New York pastor Carl Lentz,” Christian Today, June 6, 2014).

What Jesus did was plainly and publicly limit marriage to one man and one woman as in the beginning of creation (Matthew 19). Obviously this leaves no room for “same sex marriage.”

In the same CNN interview, Laura Lentz, Carl’s wife and Hillsong co-pastor, said, “It’s not our place to tell anyone how they should live, it’s--that’s their journey.”

Like the CCM world as a whole, Hillsong is so “relevant” that they are traitors to the truth of God’s Word, yet their music influences multitudes of Baptists and fundamentalists. When asked by a reporter why Hillsong is so successful, Brian Houston replied, “We are scratching people where they are itching” (“The Lord’s Profits,” Sydney Morning Herald, January 30, 2003). That is right out of 2 Timothy 4:3, which is a warning of apostasy. It describes people who itch for a new kind of Christianity, and it describes heaps of preachers who will scratch this illicit itch. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.”

Conclusion

The reason for all of this is not difficult to discern. Typically, CCM musicians have been accepted as Christians upon the flimsiest testimony of faith and have not been properly instructed and discipled. They have fed their spiritual lives with dangerous authors such as C.S. Lewis, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Brennan Manning, Leonard Sweet, Rick Warren, and Rob Bell. They have loved corrupt Bible translations such as The Message, immersed themselves in sensual music, practiced contemplative mysticism, and have sought after emotional highs and “signs and wonders” instead of living by faith. They have played with the world, which is more dangerous than any poisonous snake, instead of living separated lives.

They have sown to the wind and are reaping the whirlwind.

The fact that Contemporary Christian Music is home to many homosexuals and the fact that the vast majority of contemporary Christian musicians do not reprove this sin publicly is evidence of its deep apostasy.

And not to mention too that CCM is being embraced by young "evangelicals" - no, I'm not speaking for all Millenials(as we have born-again KJB believing Millenials here), but nonetheless look at what they are embracing. And the Millenials crowd are also being used to help push the sodomy agenda. You see where everything is tied in?

It's only a matter of when until the churches in America accept the sodomy agenda, and it won't necessarily be b/c of their 501c3 status.

But Contemporary Worship Brings People To Jesus! Right…?
We don’t worship together to attract unbelievers. We worship together because God is worthy.

Written by Jonathan Aigner | Thursday, January 22, 2015

For one thing, music doesn’t bring people to Jesus. Jesus does that work admirably enough through the Holy Spirit, certainly better than a brush with David Crowder’s beard. But there’s an even deeper flaw in our thinking. Worship is not an evangelistic tool.

Missional Meditation
Consider this comment I received on the “Modernized Hymns” post.

Quote
I have tried to avoid God my whole life. I wouldn’t know a traditional hymn from a modernized hymn. I’ve never even stepped foot into a church…until this past Sunday. The people on stage sang a song by David Crowder, and I began to feel the very presence of God. It was like nothing I ever felt before. Tears streamed down my eyes and right then, I bowed down and made a decision to surrender my life to Jesus. I ask you a simple question…wasn’t David Crowder’s song – guitars, modernized lyrics, and all – worth being written and sang that way? - The person next to you in the pew

This type of appeal is quite common, both on this blog and elsewhere. I’ve heard it as long as I can remember. “We don’t worship like we used to because it doesn’t bring people to Jesus. You want people to come to Jesus, right? RIGHT?!? YOU BETTER WANT PEOPLE TO COME TO JESUS!!”

I heard one pastor say it this way: “When we aren’t willing to change how we worship so that our culture understands it, we’re telling the world it can go to hell.”

Yikes.

To make sure I don’t come across as mean or callous, especially to my evangelical friends and readers, I should explain something.

I do want people to come to Jesus.

But my answer to this commenter is, “No.”

For one thing, music doesn’t bring people to Jesus. Jesus does that work admirably enough through the Holy Spirit, certainly better than a brush with David Crowder’s beard.

But there’s an even deeper flaw in our thinking.

Worship is not an evangelistic tool.

We don’t worship together to attract unbelievers.

We worship together because God is worthy.

We worship together because this gracious God has called us into his story and grafted us together as covenant people.

We worship together because we desperately need to tell and retell and hear and rehear that story.

We worship together to be refocused, reshaped, renewed by God’s gifts. We need liturgy. We need Word and Sacrament.

Homily on Homage
Did you know that we’re supposed to do work in corporate worship?

Quote
I didn’t for the longest time either, having grown up in the middle of the church growth movement. As far as I could tell, the point of “worship” was to get as many butts in the seats as possible, mesmerize them with a theatrical production of bright lights and shiny objects. You know, the latest and greatest in Jesusy entertainment. And then, we bait-and-switch them with the gospel at the end.

At some point, we decided that the worship service was the best venue for evangelism. After all, if we can just make things interesting enough, funny enough, dynamic enough, and entertaining enough, we can really pack ‘em in. So, put together a mini-concert, followed by a speaker who knows how to get the crowd energized, mix in a few things about Jesus, and you’re set.

Even our language has changed dramatically, as we’ve learned to borrow more from our entertainment culture. Instead of a Sanctuary, a place of refuge, we have an auditorium. Instead of chancels and platforms, we have stages. We have performers and an audience. Churches are now hiring worship “producers.” Our music is entirely current and commercial.

We couldn’t possibly do anything else. We’d lose too many people.

To make matters worse, we’ve grown to like it ourselves. It’s nice to come to church and be entertained. Throw that liturgy out the window. I don’t want to work, I want to sit here and get fat off the spiritual carbs they put in front of me. And if the production value slips, I can always go down the road and find another fast-food church that fits me just right.

No longer are there opportunities for congregants to participate, other than singing along if they feel like it, as if they were singing “Roll Out the Barrel” at a Milwaukee Brewers’ seventh-inning stretch. We’ve lost the idea that we are gathered there for a sacred task, not in search of a good time.

And it’s cost us dearly. We don’t have the opportunity to be the people of God together anymore, reshaped by God’s gifts and molded by the Christian story.

And in case anyone is wondering, it hasn’t really helped the evangelistic cause in the long run, anyway. It’s still shrinking. See, when you compete with all other forms of entertainment – TV, movies, music, sports – you will lose. Those things are always more entertaining, at least to those who are looking to be entertained.

That doesn’t mean we lock our doors on Sunday morning. To the contrary, and this is the tricky part. Evangelism is always a byproduct of true Christian worship. The problem is that we thought we needed to be marketable to begin with. Along the way, we got caught up in illusions of grandeur, judging our evangelistic worth by the number of people we could squeeze in our buildings.

Cancel the Vaseline and shoehorn.

But the moment we turn from our task at hand to try and capitalize, we fall short again. Stanley Hauerwas says it well: “The difficulty with worship especially shaped to entertain those who are ‘new’ is not that it is entertaining but that the god who is entertained in such worship cannot be the Trinity.”

So back to David Crowder. Whether doing his songs or his hymn arrangements is a good thing, well, that’s up for discussion I suppose. But I don’t think answer can be, “It’s okay, because it brings people to Jesus.”

Hymn of Invitation
So what happens, then, if we don’t craft our worship services to attract unbelievers?

We’ll have to get serious again about Sunday. All of us. And then as the clock strikes noon, we’ll have to go.

Go out and feed the hungry.

Go out and clothe the naked.

Go out and associate with people who don’t look like us, don’t think like us, don’t act like us, don’t vote like us, and don’t usually like us.

Go out and fight for justice.

Go out and end oppression.

Go out and proclaim anew the old, old story.

Go out and reach out to those who are running from God and God’s church.

Go out and stop deflecting tough questions with our usual, tired cliches.

And do all of this in the name of the one who sent us.

And then open the doors wide again on Sunday morning.

Then we’ll actually be the church.

A Redeemed Benediction
I can’t help by think of Fred Pratt Green’s haunting, convicting hymn.

When the church of Jesus shuts its outer door,
lest the roar of traffic drown the voice of prayer,
may our prayers, Lord, make us ten times more aware
that the world we banish is our Christian care.

If our hearts are lifted where devotion soars
high above this hungry, suffering world of ours,
lest our hymns should drug us to forget its needs,
forge our Christian worship into Christian deeds.

Lest the gifts we offer, money, talents, time,
serve to salve our conscience, to our secret shame,
Lord, reprove, inspire us by the way you give;
teach us, dying Savior, how true Christians live.

Forge our Christian worship into Christian deeds. Wow. Let it be so.
