There's a couple of news articles in this thread where shootings happened in non-school places - but for the most part, they involve schools(both secondary and college), and are happening in them more frequent b/c it seems like they are really pushing the gun control agenda now(and they're doing so in places where the youth are).

School Gunman Wanted to be Filmed Killing Cops, Witness Says

A man was arrested today after he allegedly fired a gun at an Atlanta-area elementary school, sending hundreds of panicked children running out of the building for cover, officials said.

No students at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Ga., were injured and all have been accounted for, Dekalb County School District spokesman Quinn Hudson told ABCNews.com.

A lone white male, believed to be in his 20s and armed with an assault rifle, was arrested this afternoon soon after reports of gunfire, Hudson said.

School officials could not confirm how many rounds were fired, or if the shooting took place inside or outside the school.

The suspected gunman may have been carrying an AK-47, according to ABC affiliate WSB-TV in Atlanta.

A woman identified as Antoinette who worked in the school's office called the news channel, after the gunman told her to call and tell the media he wanted journalists to film him killing police.

Lacey LeCroy, an assignment editor at WSB-TV, said she could hear gunfire over the line. Eventually, she said, Antoinette returned to the phone and said the gunman was in custody.

Police including U.S. Marshals entered the school and found the gunman in the office. He surrendered without incident, according to Lt. Kyle Jones, spokesman for the Dekalb County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting came on just the second week of classes at the charter school. All of the school's 600 students were safely evacuated to a nearby Walmart to await their parents or buses.

School safety and gun control were again thrust into the national spotlight last year when Adam Lanza, 20, killed 20 students and six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

No injuries after Memphis 5-year-old fires gun in school
8/22/13
http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/08/22/20138428-no-injuries-after-memphis-5-year-old-fires-gun-in-school?lite=

A Memphis, Tenn., kindergarten student is in police custody after he fired a gun in his elementary school cafeteria Thursday morning.

The incident didn't result in any injuries, and school is back in normal operation, school officials said.

The Westside Elementary School student, 5, brought the gun to school in his backpack Thursday morning, according to school officials at Westside and at the Shelby County schools superintendent's office.

While waiting for the opening bell in the cafeteria, the gun accidentally discharged once inside the boy's backpack at about 7:42 a.m. CT during breakfast and before school started at 8 a.m., school officials said.

"Staff immediately took possession of that backpack," said Christian Ross, external communication analyst for Shelby County schools. "Our Shelby County school security team were contacted as well as local law enforcement. They're handling the investigation. From what we've heard, there's no evidence of harmful intent."

It's unclear where the boy, who was not identified, got the gun. He will be disciplined "in accordance with the state's zero tolerance policy" for weapons, according to a statement from school officials.

The school, located in north Memphis, serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade. WMCTV.com in Memphis reported some shaken-up parents were picking up their children from school.

No other details were released, including the type of firearm involved. Memphis police confirmed Thursday afternoon that the student was still detained.

The incident comes just days after an Atlanta-area school shooting in which a man carrying nearly 500 rounds of ammunition opened fire in an elementary school's front office before surrendering peacefully to police.

This seems to be the "new norm" now...

Winston-Salem-Forsyth County Schools spokesman Theo Helm said the shooting occurred at Carver High School Friday afternoon.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Police say one student was wounded in a shooting at a North Carolina high school and that another student is in custody as a suspect

A statement from police said officers responded to a shooting report about 2:30 p.m. Friday at Carver High School. It is on the northeast side of Winston-Salem. The report came just over an hour before classes would have been dismissed.

Winston-Salem Police Chief Barry Rountree said at a news conference that the school was conducting a fire drill at the time.

Police said the wounded student was taken to a hospital with what they described as non-life threatening injuries.

Neither the suspect nor the victim has been identified.

The high school of 700 students was on lockdown for two hours and postponed its home football game.

There seems to be a shooting every day now - as for this one, didn't they say the same thing about those Columbine shootings(how they dressed in black)?

NJ Mall Shooting: Man Dressed In Black Opens Fire, Hundreds Of Police Respond
11/4/13
http://www.inquisitr.com/1019217/nj-mall-shooting-man-dressed-in-black-opens-fire-hundreds-of-police-respond/

A NJ mall shooting has prompted police to lock down a suburban mall after a man dressed in black and wearing a black helmet started firing shots.

The shooting reportedly began at the Garden State Plaza Mall in Paramus just after 9 pm, when the mall was close to closing. Witnesses say the man fired up to five shots, though Det. Rachel Morgan of the Paramus Police Department could not confirm whether shots had been fired.

There were several hundred police officers who responded to the NJ mall shooting, reports said.

Though the stores inside the Garden State Plaza Mall remain on lockdown, the shoppers and employees trapped inside have sent trickles of information via social media. One woman tweeted that she ran from the mall screaming, and others have described being escorted off the premises by New Jersey State Troopers.

The NJ mall shooting comes just days after a gunman opened fire in Los Angeles International Airport in a targeted attack against TSA officials. One TSA agent was killed and several other people injured.

It also follows a devastating terrorist attack on a mall in Kenya in September. Armed members of Al Shabaab, an Islamist militant group from Somalia, entered the upscale mall in suburban Nirobi and opened fire, killing dozens of people.

Though details of the NJ mall shooting remain sketchy, witnesses seem to indicate a targeted attack.

One witness told NBC 4 that he saw “a man dressed in all black, including a black helmet,” who was “carrying a rifle and started firing shots inside the mall.”

NJ mall shooting suspect found dead in apparent suicide

Richard Shoop, the 20-year-old gunman who terrorized shoppers at Westfield Garden State Plaza mall in New Jersey, was found dead in the shopping center after firing six shots at inanimate objects.

UPI) -- Richard Shoop, the man believed to be behind a mall shooting in New Jersey Monday night, was found dead in an apparent suicide hours after the incident took place.

Shoop's body was found in Westfield Garden State Plaza mall at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday, hours after he fired at least six bullets without hurting anyone.

The shooting set off a frenzied hunt for the gunman in which officers where not sure whether he was still inside or outside the 2-million-square-foot building. Shoop reportedly shot himself after opening fire at the mall, and his body was found at an obscure location in the shopping center.

"We believe that he went in there with the intent to either be shot by police, which we call suicide by cop, or to take his own life, which ultimately he did," Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said Tuesday morning.

Monday's shooting began around 9:20 p.m. ET, right before closing time. Shoop reportedly walked into the facility carrying a rifle modified to look like an AK-47. He was dressed in all black and wore a motorcycle helmet.

Molinelli said the gunman took the rifle from his brother.

According to witnesses' accounts the suspect had many chances to shoot and kill the people, but he never even tried. Instead, he fired toward the ceiling, an escalator, and elevator and a storefront.

"There were thousands of people in this mall at 9:20 tonight, and many of them were within 5 feet from him," Molinelli said. "He clearly had the ability to shoot an individual."

The 20-year-old gunman had a history of drug abuse known by local law enforcement.

"You wouldn't think that at age 20, how much can you do in your life, but in his life, he at least thought that he was reaching a point where there was no recourse but to take his own life," the prosecutor said.

Authorities believe Shoop acted alone. He reportedly left a note in the home where he was living though it is unclear why he went to the mall before he decided to take his own life.

Lodi High lockdown lifted after threat turns up nothing
11/5/13
http://www.upi.com/blog/2013/11/05/Lodi-High-lockdown-lifted-after-threat-turns-up-nothing/2221383686968/

Lodi High School in Bergen County, N.J., was shut down Tuesday morning when someone thought they saw a gunman.

(UPI) -- A New Jersey high school was locked down Tuesday morning after officials received a tip of a potential gunman inside the building, but the lockdown was lifted after a search turned up nothing.

School officials at Lodi High School in Bergen County made an announcement over the school loudspeaker that someone might be armed inside the building. Police swept the school, going door-to-door and clearing students in each classroom. All students were patted down before they were released.

Nearby Hasbrouck Heights School District also locked down its schools in response to the warning.

The lockdowns were lifted at 11:30 a.m., about an hour after they were put in place.

Officials are understandably wary after Central Connecticut State University was locked down Monday when a man wearing a costume appeared to be carrying a gun. A man terrorized shoppers inside Westfield Garden State Plaza mall Monday night, firing several shots and later committing suicide.

Cincinnati Gunman Scares University of Cincinnati Campus
11/6/13
http://www.webpronews.com/cincinnati-gunman-scares-university-of-cincinnati-campus-2013-11

As a college student, this writer can attest to how scary it is to hear about shootings on college campuses and face the reality that such threats could become a reality at nearly any point. Those fears also surfaced for students, faculty, and staff at the University of Cincinnati when reports of a person with a gun were called in on Short Vine, a street near the campus. The campus police sent out an alert, telling people to stay out of the area, and began a search for the mysterious gunman.

The campus police began their search for the gunman, but never issued an official lockdown, though they did encourage students to stay where they were and to avoid the reported area. The police searched the buildings and area around where the gunman had been sighted, and found nothing, so they issued an “all clear” alert, telling students it was safe to move about. The police reported that the suspect, described as a fifteen-year-old black male, ran into a neighborhood across the street shortly after being spotted.

Though no campus-wide lockdown was issued, certain buildings were locked down as the search was conducted. The police focused on Proctor Hall, a building that was not technically on campus, and surrounding areas to ensure that there was no threat after the gunman fled. The campus police officially reported that no gunman had been found, no shots had been fired, and no injuries or deaths had occurred in the process.

There has been no statement issued concerning whether or not the suspect will be pursued or kept on lookout for. The story ends on a happy note, however, that there were no injuries or deaths as a result of the scare, and everyone present was able to walk away from the scare with nothing more than a frightening story to recount to their friends, family, and loved ones back home.

Are we seeing a pattern yet?

And just how do the police know the "suspect" is a 15 year old? Who was the suspect "spotted" by, the one who made the call in?

It's getting to the point where I think we need a new definition of the term "copy cat".

copy cat - a manufactured follow up event, usually conducted by government entities, designed with the intent to reiterate a point, to influence public attitudes.

According to emergency dispatchers, police were called to the school on Crane Avenue just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, minutes after the school dismissed for the day.

“All I heard were gunshots.  I just thought it was kids playing around.  My friend said, ‘A kid is laying on the ground, and there is blood.’ Everyone started running,” said senior Krystal Henson.

Homicide detectives told Channel 11 News that three men walked out of nearby woods and fired shots at three students were shot as they were coming out of the school.

The detectives said the shooters were described as three black males wearing all black. The shooters ran back into the woods after firing shots, police said.

Channel's Rick Earle has confirmed that authorities are looking for the three shooters in the woods behind the school.

Police search for a gunman at locked-down Yale
11/25/13

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — An anonymous caller warned authorities Monday that his roommate was on his way to Yale University to shoot people, leading officials to lock down the Ivy League campus as police searched for a gunman.

The hunt, which came as the school was on November break, was stymied by students who had stayed behind and were afraid to open their doors, police said.

A 911 call was received at 9:48 a.m. from a man at a pay phone about a mile from the campus, said Officer David Hartman, a New Haven Police spokesman.

"All he really said was that his roommate was on his way to the university, to Yale University, to shoot people," he said
.

Police later received reports from witnesses who reported seeing someone with a gun, Hartman said. But he said it was possible they had simply seen officers responding to the initial call.

There was nothing specific about the threat, he said, and the call lasted only seconds. There were no reports of shots fired or anyone injured.

Police blocked off several streets near the university's Old Campus, in the heart of New Haven, where they were concentrating their search. Several local schools also were placed in lockdown. Police in tactical gear entered several campus buildings, and a helicopter hovered over the area. Pedestrian traffic in the normally bustling area was sparse, with cold and windy weather keeping many people inside.

The response included several police departments, the FBI and other federal agencies, Hartman said. Authorities were conducting a room-by-room search of buildings, he said.

Yale advised students and staff members to shelter in place. The school also issued an advisory asking people off campus to stay away from the area.

Many students and staff members left campus for the Thanksgiving holiday following Saturday's traditional football game against Harvard.

But many others were still in their dorm rooms, Hartman said. Police were having difficulty gaining access to some rooms because those locked inside were not convinced they were dealing with law enforcement, he said. Most rooms don't have peepholes.

"Using an abundance of caution, we're still going ahead with those searches," Hartman said.

Yale sent out an email telling community members that officers would be slipping a Yale ID under the door or using keys to gain access.

Undergraduate classes are set to resume Dec. 2

Yale has been the target of violence in the past. In May 2003, a bomb damaged an empty classroom and adjacent reading room at the law school.

A Yale professor, David J. Gelernter, was seriously injured in 1993, when a mail bomb mailed by Theodore Kaczynski, the man known as the Unabomber, exploded in his campus office.

Friday's search came several weeks after a scare on another Connecticut campus.

Central Connecticut State University was in lockdown for several hours Nov. 4 after reports by witnesses of a masked man carrying a gun or sword.

Police arrested a student, David Kyem, who said he had been wearing a ninja-like Halloween costume and meant no harm. He faces charges including breach of peace.

Police: Yale campus safe, no gunman found Roll Eyes
11/25/13

http://news.yahoo.com/police-yale-campus-safe-no-gunman-found-211951665.html

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — New Haven authorities say they have not found a gunman on Yale's campus and are leaning toward a call warning of an armed man heading to shoot up the school being a hoax.

New Haven Police Chief Dean Esserman said at a news conference Monday afternoon that New Haven and the Yale campus are both safe.

A lockdown was ended for the entire campus Monday afternoon after police spent the day searching rooms to confirm that no gunman was on campus.

New Haven police Officer David Hartman says an anonymous caller from a pay phone nearby told them his roommate had a gun and was heading to the campus.

Esserman says police hope to track down and arrest the caller.

So a guy had to use a PAY PHONE from a mile away to warn the police that his ROOMMATE was going to commit violence on the school?

I though everyone uses their CELL PHONES now, pretty much pushing pay phones to obsolete? Roll Eyes

They do, if they aren't up to something, but they were, so they used a pay phone. Did they remember to not leave finger prints on the receiver? Hmm.

Inglewood shooting: Some residents evacuated as standoff continues
11/27/13
http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-inglewood-shooting-evacuated-20131127,0,1594752.story?track=rss#axzz2lrtIvLA7

Officers were starting to evacuate residents in an Inglewood neighborhood Wednesday evening as a tense standoff continued between police and an armed man barricaded inside a home.

An unknown suspect who is believed to be holding at least one person hostage reportedly exchanged fire with Inglewood police officers responding to a domestic disturbance earlier in the day. Two injured officers were taken to a hospital and are expected to recover, said Inglewood police spokesman Oscar Mejia.

Mejia said police were still putting together a plan to evacuate residents from the typically quiet neighborhood of well-kept, single-family homes. Speaking at a news conference, he urged neighbors to stay in their homes until a police officer knocks on the door and escorts them out.

Mejia said he could not confirm reports that a 14-year-old girl was being held hostage in the home.

"We don't know how many there are if any at all but we are treating it as a hostage situation," he said.

Several neighbors said they were preparing for Thanksgiving when a commotion broke out outside a home in the 10700 block of 5th Avenue.

One neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said she was cooking when she heard screaming about 12:30 p.m. The woman said she ran outside and saw a man dragging her 14-year-old neighbor into the house.

Another neighbor, Kimberly Edwards, was on her way to the store to pick up supplies for Thursday’s dinner when she saw several police officers and a man pleading with them to rescue his sister, whom he said was being held captive in the house.

“I saw a panicked brother scream at the police officers: ‘Please get my sister out of that house, please get my sister out of that house,’ ” she said.

Shortly after, Edwards heard a barrage of gunfire. She said she saw a female officer staggering down the street and then collapse. Another officer came to her aid and carried her away, Edwards said.

Despite initial reports that two officers were shot, Inglewood Police Capt. James Madia said only one was hit by gunfire. The other officer sustained minor injuries, he said. Both are expected to recover.

Reports: Shooting at high school near Denver

Two people have been shot and a shooter may still be inside a high school in suburban Denver, according to multiple Denver news outlets.

Police and emergency vehicles are on the scene at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, about 15 miles south of Denver. Hundreds of students are being evacuated from the school.

The high school is in the Littleton School District, and only a few miles from the scene of previous mass shootings at the Aurora movie theater in 2012 and Columbine High School in 1999.

Denver Post reporter Ryan Parker says witnesses at the scene tell him that a student shot at least two students in the school cafeteria about 1 p.m. MT. Parker tweeted that Adam Jones, whose sister goes to high school, said students are still locked in rooms, and "very scared."

Per CNN: All students at that HS were told to put their hands in their air so that they can be padded down - then they proceeded to say, "This the new normal".

Shooting Reported at a High School in Colorado
12/13/13

Littleton Public Schools[**Note, that's PLURAL] in Colorado went into lockdown after a shooting at Arapahoe High School in town of Centennial, south of Denver. The school is part of the Littleton public school system and is also about eight miles from Columbine High School, the site of a 1999 school shooting that left twelve people dead and injured 23 others. Centennial, like Littleton and Aurora, the site of the deadly movie theater shooting in 2012), are suburbs of Denver.

At a press briefing following the shooting, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said that the suspected gunman was found dead, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials aren't identifying the gunman at this time. The shooter had expressed a desire to "confront" a particular teacher at the school, who was evacuated safely. Two students were found injured following the shooting. One victim had a "minor" wound that might not have been a gunshot wound. A second student was hospitalized in serious condition.

Tomorrow is the first anniversary of the deadly Newtown elementary school shooting. Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy tweeted the following as he headed home for the grim anniversary of the massacre in his home state.

One person, gunman dead in shooting at Reno medical building
http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/17/us/reno-hospital-shooting/index.html
12/17/13

(CNN) -- A gunman and another person were killed during a shooting Tuesday at a medical building near the Renown Regional Medical Center, said Tom Robinson of the Reno, Nevada, Police Department.

Two other people were wounded and were in critical condition, Robinson said.

The shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. Police don't have a motive, but Robinson said it was not a random act.

Kat Raco, an ophthalmic technician who works on the second floor of the Nevada Advanced Medicine building, told CNN that she heard at least two large booms and then the sound of scampering feet above her.

The shooter opened fire after going to the urology office of Nevada Advanced Medicine on the third floor, said Sharon Spangler, spokeswoman for Reno Police.

Raco said she and others in her office were seeing patients when the shooting occurred and first thought someone or something had fallen.

Police were there quickly, she said, telling them to lock the doors and not let anyone in.

About 10 minutes after that, more police escorted everyone on the second floor to a catwalk between the building and a parking garage. A plain-clothed officer asked questions before staff was allowed to leave about 45 minutes after the shooting.

"The police handled it in the best way possible," Raco said. "They were very professional and calm. Everyone (in the office) stayed pretty calm."

Raco said there are no armed guards in the building.

Reno police said there were at least two dozen witnesses to interview.

Earlier, the University of Nevada police tweeted that there was an active shooter and faculty, staff and students should find shelter where they were.

CNN first learned of the shooting through the university police department's Twitter account.

The medical center describes itself as the only Level II trauma center in that region of Nevada and is home to the area's only Children's Hospital, its website says. The facility also offers the region's largest number of clinical research trials.

Last month, there was a hospital shooting in Wisconsin when police shot and wounded an armed man on the neonatal intensive care floor of a Milwaukee-area children's hospital, authorities said.

Milwaukee police had gone to the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin to arrest the man on a felony warrant and found him holding a child in the intensive care unit, authorities said. Instead of surrendering, the man took out a handgun and fled down a hallway, prompting police to shoot him.

Gunman went bowling before Arapahoe High School shooting, police say

On the morning he walked into Arapahoe High School and shot a schoolmate in the head before killing himself, Karl Pierson went bowling.

That detail — offering a chilling connection to the 1999 Columbine High massacre just eight miles away — and others about the Dec. 13 school shooting in suburban Denver were shared Monday at a morning news conference.

Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said Pierson, 18, planned and carried out the shooting on his own, likely motivated by a dispute with his former debate team coach.

“There is no question that this was a very deliberate and planned event,” he said, adding that evidence thus far in the investigation did not suggest any “direct or indirect co-conspirators.”

The sheriff said Pierson began the day as he normally would and “gave no indication that anything was amiss,” adding that Pierson took the time to eat breakfast and go bowling alone before heading to the school.

That detail prompted comparisons to the Columbine High School shooting 14 years earlier. The shooters, students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, killed 13 people and injuring 24 others before committing suicide on April 20, 1999. They originally were alleged to have attended a bowling class in the hours before the attack — an action made infamous in Michael Moore’s documentary, “Bowling for Columbine.”

Investigators later found the shooters had not attended the class that morning.

Robinson said there was no direct evidence Pierson was inspired by or had interest in the Columbine massacre.

After making a final stop to purchase more ammunition, Pierson arrived at the school and entered through a door set ajar that was supposed to be locked, but usually was not.

Robinson urged that this was standard protocol at the school and that Pierson would likely have found a way to enter the school regardless because he was "intent on executing his violence and his evil.”

Upon entering the school on its north side, armed with a shotgun, machete, 125 rounds of ammunition and three Molotov cocktails, Pierson fired one round randomly into the hallway of the school before shooting a fatal second round that killed senior Claire Esther Davis, 17.

Pierson then fired another random shot before making his way into the school’s library and media center. Robinson said Pierson then fired one round into the area surrounding the office of school librarian and debate team coach Tracy Murphy, believed to be his intended target.

He then ignited a Molotov cocktail in the center of the library, setting a fire that burned four book shelves and created a large amount of smoke. He then fired a fifth round and took his own life with a single gunshot to the head.

The sheriff took time to praise the actions of the school for implementing a lockdown quickly and effectively, as well as the actions of an armed school resource officer and unarmed school security guard.

The officer, Deputy Sheriff James Englert and security guard James Mauler, both ran to the library after hearing gunshots.

“I believe strongly the reason this incident took less than one minute and 20 seconds was the result of a very effective lockdown protocol in collaboration with the immediate and timely response by the armed school resource officer and unarmed security guard,” he said, adding that he was confident Pierson knew Englert and Mauler were in his immediate area.

“Deputy James Englert is a hero, there is no question James responded heroically and he saved lives,” Robinson said.

The sheriff said that while police were still investigating, a disagreement between Pierson and the debate team coach was likely “a primary motivator and element that was critical to the murderer’s plan.”

The sheriff also extended his condolences to the Davis family.

“Claire has left an impact on my life and the life of this community,” he said.

At least 2 injured in New Mexico school shooting
http://news.msn.com/crime-justice/at-least-2-injured-in-new-mexico-school-shooting
1/14/14

Roswell police say the suspected shooter was arrested Tuesday and the school has been placed on lockdown.

ROSWELL, N.M. — A shooter opened fire Tuesday morning at a middle school in the southeastern New Mexico city of Roswell, injuring at least two students before being taken into custody.

Officials at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, say a 14-year-old boy was flown there in critical condition and a 13-year-old girl was en route in serious condition. Information from nurses treating the boy indicates he was the shooter's target, hospital spokesman Eric Finley said.

Police say the suspect opened fire at Berrendo Middle School as classes were starting for the day. A statement from the state police said authorities responded at 8:11 a.m.

Lorena Beltran told the Albuquerque Journal her daughter, who attends the school, said a male student was shot in the face.

Roswell police say the school was placed on lockdown, and the suspected shooter was arrested. Age and other details on the suspect were not immediately released.

Police said children were bused to a nearby mall, where parents could pick them up.

Sixth-grade student Anyssa Vegara said she was talking to a security guard when she heard a shot.

"I turned around, and all I saw was someone on the floor with their arm bleeding
," Vegara told the Journal.

She said the security guard ran to assist the injured student, and school officials ordered all the students to their classrooms.

Eventually, she was able to text her mother, Monica Vegara.

"From the time hearing about it until the time she texted, it was a nightmare," Monica Vegara said.

Fawna Hendricks, whose son is a seventh-grader at Berrendo Middle School, told the newspaper she heard about the shooting on the radio. "Basically I jumped outta bed, threw on clothes, panicked," Hendricks said.

Employees who arrived early to work at United Drilling Inc., across the street from the school, heard no gunshots. They didn't know about the commotion until around 8 a.m., when their parking lot filled with police and rescue vehicles.

At the Roswell mall, parents waited anxiously for their children. Some held hands, while others hugged each other.

Roswell has a population of about 50,000. It is a center for ranching and farming, and is home to the New Mexico Military Institute, the only state-supported military college in the West. The city is perhaps best-known as the site of an alleged UFO crash in 1947.

Just like with the other "attacks" - there were "warnings"(ahead of time, that is)...

http://news.msn.com/crime-justice/nm-shooter-warned-some-students-away-police
NM shooter warned some students away: Police
1/15/14

State Police Chief Pete Kassetas says the attack was planned in advance. But he says it appears the victims were chosen randomly.

ROSWELL, N.M. — The 12-year-old boy who opened fire in a New Mexico middle school gym warned some students away just before the attack, State Police Chief Pete Kassetas said Wednesday.

Kassetas said the attack at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell was planned in advance. But he said it appeared the boy's victims — an 11-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl — were chosen randomly.

During a Wednesday press briefing, Kassetas declined to speculate on a motive or say when charges would be filed. But he said the boy got the sawed-off shotgun from his family's home and had three rounds of ammunition.

"All three rounds were expended during the incident," Kassetas said. "There was no indication that he had any ammunition other than what was loaded in the gun."

Officials said Wednesday the 11-year-old boy who was shot in the face and neck remains in critical condition at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. The 13-year-old girl is in satisfactory condition with injuries to the right shoulder.

Kassetas said investigators worked through the night executing search warrants at the school, and determined from those searches that the attack was planned. They examined the boy's locker and the duffel bag the seventh-grader used to transport the 20-gauge pump shotgun to school.

Kassetas said the handle of the gun was sawed off so it had "more of a pistol grip."

The police chief added authorities had some indication that the boy verbally warned "select students" about the attack as he arrived at the school. He didn't elaborate.

When the shots first rang out in the school's gym, some students started laughing, assuming it was just another drill.

It wasn't. But those emergency exercises that students and teachers have undergone regularly for the past two years were being credited Wednesday with the quick disarming of the suspect.

The whole thing was over in 10 seconds, police say, thanks to John Masterson, an eighth-grade social studies teacher who stepped in and talked the boy into dropping his weapon. Masterson then held the boy until authorities arrived.

"He stood there and allowed the gun to be pointed right at him so there would be no more young kids hurt," Gov. Susana Martinez told 1,500 or so people at a prayer vigil late Tuesday.

Others teachers scurried to lock kids in classrooms while students in the gym where the shooting took place dove under bleachers and took cover, said Andrea Leon, a 13-year-old eighth grader at the school.

Leon says she was walking toward the gym, where students gather before class, when she heard the gun shots. She said she knew they were real, "but some people were laughing because they thought it was fake."

"I guess they had been through many drills," she said.

Roswell Superintendent Tom Burris said the staff and students had participated in active shooter training and responded appropriately.

Police and schools nationwide adopted "active shooter" policies after Columbine High School students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 classmates and a teacher, and wounded 26 others before killing themselves in the Littleton, Colo., school's library in 1999. Police waited 45 minutes for a SWAT team to arrive before entering the school. Officers now are trained to confront a shooter immediately.

The family of the injured 11-year-old boy has asked that his name not be released while he recovers.

The suspected shooter was transferred to an Albuquerque psychiatric hospital following a hearing Tuesday, according to attorney Robert Gorence, who is representing his family. Gorence said the family would release a statement Wednesday.

Two students wounded in Philadelphia high school shooting
1/18/14
http://news.yahoo.com/two-students-shot-philadelphia-high-school-suspect-held-000609661.html;_ylt=A0SO80eyntpSwUEAq8xXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTB0cWVmanVlBHNlYwNzYwRjb2xvA2dxMQR2dGlkA1ZJUDM0M18x

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Two students were shot and wounded on Friday afternoon at a charter high school in northern Philadelphia, police said, in the latest school shooting to fuel a national debate over gun control laws.

A teenaged girl and a boy were shot in their arms at the Delaware Valley Charter High School at about 3:30 p.m. when a young male pulled a handgun in a gymnasium with about seven students in it, officials and media reports said.

Police said the young man who fired the gun was part of the group, CNN reported. The shooting may have been an accident, police said.

Investigators have not said who fired the shots. A boy was taken into custody, but later cleared, said Philadelphia Police Lieutenant John Stanford.

"Initially, he was thought to be the shooter, but investigators were able to determine the kid was not a shooter," Stanford said. "He was there but I don't believe he was involved."

Another boy turned himself in and was being interviewed by police late Friday night, Stanford said. A third boy was also supposed to turn himself in, but had not yet done so. Huh

Local television station 6ABC reported the girl and boy who were shot were both 15 and in stable condition.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said the shooting was caught on video.

Earlier, police used Twitter to urge the suspected shooter to surrender.

"SHOOTER - Turn yourself in. Get it over with now," they said.

School shootings such as the one at Sandy Hook elementary school in December 2012 that left 26 people dead have intensified a national debate over whether gun control regulations need to be stricter to curb gun violence.

In another shooting incident on Friday, a 16-year-old student was shot in the arm, apparently by a student with whom he had a dispute, as he walked away from Albany High School, about 165 miles south of Atlanta, WALB-TV reported.

In October, a 12-year-old boy killed a teacher and wounded two students at his school in Sparks, Nevada, before killing himself. Another 12-year-old boy in New Mexico is accused of seriously wounding two students with a shotgun on Tuesday.

Police Seek Student In Philadelphia School Shooting
1/18/14
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/01/18/263660887/police-seek-student-in-philadelphia-school-shooting?ft=1&f=1001

Philadelphia police are still looking for a student they believe was involved in a school shooting that left two 15-year-old students wounded on Friday.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports:

"One of the victims, a girl who was shot through the arm, was treated at Einstein Medical Center, just blocks away from Delaware Valley Charter High School, where the shooting occurred. She was released from the hospital later in the day.

"The second victim, her boyfriend, was struck by the same bullet, which lodged in his shoulder, police said. He remained at the hospital Friday night."

The Inquirer reports that two students had been questioned by police and they were seeking a third student. An unnamed "high-ranking law enforcement source" told the paper that they believe the shooting was accidental — that it happened while the students played with the gun.

NBC Philadelphia reports that parents rushed to the school after they heard the news.

"A school is supposed to be a safe environment. Are you kidding me? Two kids just got shot," one parent told the station. "How was a child, or whoever, [able to] bring a gun up in the school?"

USA Today reports that after gun went off, the school was placed on lockdown and "the 600 students were searched and released individually."

This news, of course, comes just days after a 12-year-old student opened fire at a Roswell, N.M. school, wounding two fellow students.

Teen surrenders in Philadelphia school shooting
1/18/14

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A 17-year-old boy wanted in connection with a Philadelphia school shooting that wounded two students turned himself in to police on Saturday, a detective said.

The two injured students, a boy and a girl both aged 15, were shot in their arms on Friday at the Delaware Valley Charter High School when a teenage boy pulled a handgun in a gymnasium with about seven students in it, police said.

The teen sought in connection with the shooting surrendered and was charged with aggravated assault and related offenses, Philadelphia Police Detective Steve Grace said.

The boy, whose name has not been released, was being questioned by investigators, Grace said.

Soon after the incident, which was captured on surveillance video, police said another teenager thought to be the shooter was taken into custody but released when he was cleared of wrongdoing.

A third teenager was questioned and released on Friday although he could still face charges, police said.

The girl wounded in the shooting was treated and released from Albert Einstein Medical Center and the boy remains in a stable condition, police said.

School shootings such as the one at a Connecticut elementary school in December 2012 that left 26 children and adult staff members dead have intensified a national debate over whether gun control regulations need to be stricter.

In October, a 12-year-old boy killed a teacher and wounded two students at his school in Sparks, Nevada, before killing himself. Another 12-year-old boy in New Mexico is accused of seriously wounding two students with a shotgun on Tuesday.

All these existing gun laws, and what has happened to the crime rate? It hasn't gone down anywhere near what they have been claiming it would. They keep adding new gun restrictions, yet the crime rate doesn't change. Hmm.

And consider that in Arizona, we have "open carry" with no permit required, and "concealed carry", no permit required, for years BEFORE the Tuscan shooting, and not a single citizen had a gun on themselves to confront the shooter. The "myth" of the Wild West is just that, a myth, perpetuated by certain people who are hell bent on disarming the public.

I think really the only remaining question is, "Just how many patriotic Americans are left that actually have an understanding of the Constitution?". That determines the level of resistance of the masses, but as Obama has put it, change is coming to America.
