The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. 'My first home': Owner of boardwalk custard stand shocked by devastating blaze
9/13/13
http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/09/13/20478901-my-first-home-owner-of-boardwalk-custard-stand-shocked-by-devastating-blaze?lite&ocid=msnhp&pos=2

The owner of a beachside frozen custard business thought to be near the origin of a devastating fire on the Jersey Shore said he was “still in shock” after losing all four of his stands to the blaze that consumed several blocks of boardwalk in Seaside Park and neighboring Seaside Heights.

While the cause of the fire is still unknown, authorities have said it appears to have broken out near a Kohr’s Frozen Custard stall on Thursday afternoon, before spreading down the tar-roofed shops and restaurants whipped by 30 to 40 mph winds and forcing firefighters to mount a desperate stand after clawing a trench in the boardwalk.

Owner Bruce Kohr told NBC News in a phone interview on Friday that the damage seems “so unreal,” saying that he grew up sitting at the counter, greeting customers. It was “not my second home, it was my first home,” he said.

He added that his “heart goes out to the neighboring owners of businesses, my customers, and the first responders.” Among the responders who rushed toward the blaze near his store, which was not open when the fire started, were former customers, he said.

Kohr said he was in a local Lowe’s store about 20 minutes from the scene on Thursday when he got a call from a manager who was shutting down the custard stand for the end of the season, and smelled smoke.

They were “getting it ready to go asleep for the winter,” Kohr said of the stand. “The walk-ins [refrigerators] were cleaned out, the breakers were off, the store was de-energized.” When he got the call from the manager, he abandoned his shopping cart and drove in the direction of the fire, he said.

As he approached the bridge between the town of Toms River and the barrier island where Seaside Park is located, he saw a rising plume of smoke.

There are at least three separate companies bearing the name Kohr’s that make frozen treats and sell them along the New Jersey coastline. There’s Kohr’s Frozen Custard, which sold custard and hot homemade waffles from four locations in Seaside Heights and Seaside Park and one in Pleasant Beach, according to its website.

Another is called Original Kohr’s, which also has locations in Seaside Heights, according to its website. The last variation is called Kohr Brothers, and has locations in six states including New Jersey. They all trace their lineage to a group of brothers who got into the frozen custard business in the early 1900s, according to a 2000 profile of the companies published by The New York Times.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Bruce and Nancy Kohr wrote of having their family business go up in flames.

“What can we say? Our hearts are broken,” they wrote in the statement on Facebook. “Not only did we witness our business being taken from us, right before our eyes, we also witnessed our family’s history go up in smoke. Our hearts go out to all our neighbors, friends, and ‘family’ that had to witness the same. Thankfully no lives were lost and nobody suffered serious injury.”

“Thank you to the firefighters that fought tirelessly to save what they could,” they wrote in the statement.

“Kohr’s Frozen Custard is a Jersey shore icon, a cornerstone,” poster Donna Marie Corvino wrote on Facebook. “Millions of custard cones have passed over the counters on the Jersey shore, and I’m hoping they will again.”

“Your stores on [the] Seaside boardwalk represent childhood memories for so many including myself,” wrote Sacheen Welch on the company’s Facebook page. “We are Jersey Strong and I am sure the original ‘Jersey Shore’ will make a comeback stronger and better than ever.”

A team of investigators including members of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s office, state police, arson and bomb experts, and the county fire marshal and sheriff will investigate the cause of the blaze once the scene is safe enough to do so, Gov. Chris Christie said at a press briefing on Friday.

“The investigation will likely take days, at which point the scene can then be turned over to the property owners,” Christie said. “I’m not going to speculate and there’s no import that should be drawn from the identity of the investigators or the numbers. This is typical.”

Kohr said on Friday that he had “not heard from any officials.”

Fire engulfs buildings on New Jersey boardwalk hit by Superstorm Sandy
9/12/13

(CNN) -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie called a fire raging through boardwalk buildings Thursday an "unthinkable situation" as firefighters continued to fight the high flames and black smoke in Seaside Park, New Jersey.

Christie said 35 engine companies, 15 ladders and 400 firefighters remained on the scene Thursday evening.

So far, about 20 businesses have been burned and damaged over six blocks. Some embers hit a condominium, but it was quickly put out, Christie said.

Several firefighters have sustained minor injuries, including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation, Christie said.

The return of Seaside Heights The fire was still burning along Ocean Terrace Avenue between Stockton Avenue and Lincoln Avenue Thursday evening.

Christie said he was notified of the fire shortly after 3:30 p.m. ET.

A cause has not been determined. The damage is almost entirely on the boardwalk, Christie said.

Fire personnel dug a 20-foot trench on Lincoln Avenue; "that's where firefighters are making their stand right now," Christie said. Brisk winds are spreading the fire, Christie said.

"The destruction south of Lincoln Avenue, it's complete," Christie said Thursday.

"I said to my staff, I feel like I want to throw up, and that's me. After all the effort and time and resources that we've put in to help the folks in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights rebuild. To see this going on, as I said at the top, is just unthinkable."

The famous boardwalk of Seaside Heights was thrown into the public eye shortly after Superstorm Sandy tore its famous Jet Star roller coaster into the water. The coaster was removed from the ocean in May, shortly before the boardwalk reopened for business.

The FunTown Pier was destroyed by Sandy and partially reopened this summer.

Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers told CNN in May that rebuilding the boardwalk cost $8 million. The total cost for Sandy repairs in Seaside Heights was $16 million.

Christie explained that fire troops were experiencing water supply challenges because of damage to the system post Sandy, and that teams were drawing lines from Barnegat Bay.

CNN affiliate KYW reported that the fire started at Kohr Brothers frozen custard shop on the FunTown Amusement Pier around 2:15 p.m. ET. The fire escalated to six alarms shortly before 4 p.m. ET, according to the same affiliate.

Jersey Central Power and Light spokesman Ron Morano said their crews are in the area and that he is not aware of any outages due to the fire.

Residents Devastated by New Jersey Boardwalk Fire: "Sandy Was Enough For Us"
By GIO BENITEZ and ALEXIS SHAW | Good Morning America – 2 hours 51 minutes ago

A video shot on a cell phone camera capturing the start of the massive blaze that engulfed the iconic New Jersey shore boardwalk may provide investigators with new clues into how the fire started.

The footage shows smoke billowing from a Kohr's Custard Stand at the Funtown Pier on the Seaside Park boardwalk, a stretch of boardwalk that had been damaged but not destroyed during Superstorm Sandy.

Heavy winds gusting at 20 to 30 mph pushed the fire north six blocks into Seaside Heights and a part of the boardwalk that was recently reconstructed after being completely destroyed during the October 2012 storm.

Work crews had only completed repairs to the boardwalk destroyed by storm waters just before Memorial Day and in time for a visit from Prince Harry in May. The fire destroyed a length of boardwalk that was home to approximately 30 businesses, officials said.

Residents said the charred debris is a devastating reminder of what it took to rebuild the shore following the storm.

"Sandy was enough for us," New Jersey resident Cindy Wegeman told ABC News. "Now that we just got done rebuilding, the fire came and took that away, too."

At the height of the blaze, more than 400 firefighters worked quickly to quell the wild flames, breaking through the boardwalk to stop the fire from spreading.

While residents and visitors of the beloved boardwalk said the fire brought back unwanted memories from Sandy's destruction, officials have yet to determine what may have caused the fire.

"How this fire started, we don't know yet and it would be irresponsible for any of us to speculate," New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said at a news conference.

The fire is considered "suspicious" and is being investigated by the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, sources told ABC News.

Investigators are suspicious of the fire's origin because it was a midday fire with no bad weather to speak of or obvious cause, there were no injuries, the structure survived the summer season only to burn now, and a huge number of firefighters were not around Thursday because the annual New Jersey Firemen's Convention was kicking off today in Atlantic City, sources told ABC News.

Officials said they were looking into all possibilities for the cause of the fire. While investigators have started to collect evidence from the scene, there are areas of the boardwalk that are still smoldering.

The investigation into the cause of the fire has been taken over by the county prosecutor, which officials said was a routine procedure.

Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's office, said investigators were asking the public to come forward with any videos or photos they might have shot before or during the fire to help them as they try to piece the circumstances together. Individuals can call 732-929-2027 with information.
