KENYA MALL ATTACKERS TARGET NON-MUSLIMS

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Gunmen threw grenades and opened fire Saturday killing at least 10 people in an attack targeting non-Muslims at an upscale mall in Kenya's capital that was hosting a children's day event, witnesses said.

A local hospital was overwhelmed with the number of wounded being brought in hours after the attack, so they had to divert them to a second facility.

Elijah Kamau, who was at the mall at the time of the midday attack, said that the gunmen made a declaration that non-Muslims would be targeted.

"The gunmen told Muslims to stand up and leave. They were safe, and non-Muslims would be targeted," he said.

Manish Turohit, 18, said he saw gunmen with AK-47s and vests with hand grenades on them inside the mall before he escaped to hide in a parking garage for two hours.

"They just came in and threw a grenade. We were running and they opened fire. They were shouting and firing," he said after being marched out of the mall in line with about 15 people who held their hands in the air.

Rob Vandijk, who works at the Dutch embassy, said he was eating at a restaurant inside the mall when attackers lobbed hand grenades inside the building. He said gunfire then burst out and people screamed as they dropped to the ground.

It appears the attack began at the outdoor seating area of Artcaffe at the front of the mall, witnesses said.

Patrick Kuria, an employee at Artcaffe, said: "We started by hearing gunshots downstairs and outside. Later we heard them come inside. We took cover. Then we saw two gunmen wearing black turbans. I saw them shoot."

Some people were shot at the entrance to the mall after volleys of gunfire moved outside and a standoff with police began. Ambulances continued to stream in and out of the mall area, ferrying the wounded who were gradually emerging from hiding inside the mall.

Many of those running from the mall clutched small children. Others were crying. Mall guards used shopping carts to wheel out wounded children.

Associated Press journalists at the mall said they saw at least 10 dead bodies and dozens wounded hours after the attack began. Officials did not yet give an official death toll.

"We are treating this as a terrorist attack," said police chief Benson Kibue, adding that there are likely no more than 10 attackers involved. Gunfire continued to be exchanged outside the mall, as a group of people remained in hiding inside the building.

Police did not say what group was responsible for the attack.

Somali's rebel group al-Shabab vowed in late 2011 to carry out a large-scale attack in Nairobi in retaliation for Kenya's sending of troops into Somalia to fight the Islamic insurgents.

The Westgate Mall is situated in Nairobi's affluent Westlands area and is frequented by expatriates and rich Kenyans.

Islamist gunmen holed up with hostages in Nairobi siege, 59 dead

Islamist militants were holed up with hostages on Sunday at a shopping mall in Nairobi, where at least 59 people have been killed in an attack by the al Shabaab group that opposes Kenya's participation in a peacekeeping mission in neighboring Somalia.

that will definitely calm things down

Israeli forces have joined Kenyan troops in the effort to save hostages from al-Qaida-linked Somali terrorists at a Nairobi mall where gunmen killed at least 59 people on Saturday, AFP reported on Sunday. "The Israelis have just entered and they are rescuing the hostages and the injured," AFP quoted a security source as saying.

Blast rocks Kenya mall in second day of standoff

A large explosion Sunday rocked an upscale Kenyan mall where Islamic extremists killed at least 59 people and held others hostage after an attack with grenades and assault rifles, reporters on the scene said.

Kenya's Daily Nation reported that a combination of Kenyan defense and internal security security forces appeared to make an assault on Nairobi's Westgate Shopping Mall a day after the extremists stormed the mall.

A Nation reporter at the scene said the helicopters surveying the scene were flying low over the attackers reportedly holed in a room with bulletproof glass.

Earlier, Kenya's interior cabinet secretary Joseph Lenku said the militants held an unknown number of hostages in the shopping center located in the Westlands area of Nairobi.

FIRST PERSON: Close friends in mortal danger at Kenya mall

Lenku said that 175 were injured and that about 1,000 people have been rescued so far.

The Israeli publication Haaretz was among media reporting that Israeli advisers were aiding Kenyan authorities. All Israelis in the mall had escaped, Haaretz said.

The Somali militant group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility on Twitter for the attack, which was allegedly carried out by 10 to 15 gunmen with AK-47s and other sophisticated weapons. Al-Shabaab said the attack was retribution for Kenyan forces' 2011 push into Somalia and threatened more violence.

"The Mujahideen entered #Westgate Mall today at around noon and are still inside the mall, fighting the #Kenyan Kuffar inside their own turf," the group said on Twitter.

"What Kenyans are witnessing at #Westgate is retributive justice for crimes committed by their military," the group said.

Oh, the irony!

One thing I have little doubt about though, those "terrorists" will wish they hadn't met those Israelis. It may be worldly stuff, but in the world, the Israeli paramilitary forces are pretty much the best in the world. Lots of dead hostage-takers.

Now: Kenyan minister says toll in Nairobi mall attack stands at 62; two 'terrorists' confirmed dead

Blast shakes Nairobi mall, smoke pours from building

A loud explosion sent thick smoke billowing from the Nairobi mall where militants from Somalia's al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab group threatened to kill hostages on the third day of a raid in which at least 59 have already died.

The blast was followed by other smaller detonations and volleys of gunfire but there was no indication of the fate of people whom the authorities say are being held by 10 to 15 Islamist gunmen who took the complex by storm on Saturday.

As troops ran into new positions, security official told Reuters at the scene: "It is us who caused the explosion, we are trying to get in through the roof."

A plume of oily black smoke was still pouring from the building after 15 minutes.

A senior officer had said police were "closing in" on the militants after rescuing more trapped people overnight. But officials have been suggesting since Sunday that the siege may be near an end, while the guerrillas seemingly remain at large.

Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku said "a few" people were still hostage: "Our disciplined forces ... have been extremely careful to find the balance between neutralizing the attackers and getting as many people to safety as possible," he added.

A spokesman for al Shabaab, which has demanded Kenya pull its troops out of neighboring Somalia, warned they would kill hostages if Kenyan security forces, who are being assisted by Western and Israeli experts, tried to storm their positions:

"Israelis and Kenyan forces have tried to enter Westgate by force but they could not," Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage said in an audio statement posted online. "The mujahideen will kill the hostages if the enemies use force."

On Twitter, the group posted: "As the operation gathers momentum inside #Westgate, the Mujahideen are for the 3rd day still in full control of the situation on the ground."

The Red Cross said on Monday that the death toll since Saturday's initial lunchtime bloodbath stood at 69. But Interior Minister Lenku said that was wrong and that only 59 were dead.

The Red Cross also said it had also recorded 63 people being reported by relatives as missing.

Survivors' tales of the military-style assault by squads of attackers hurling grenades and spraying automatic fire, has left little doubt the hostage-takers are willing to kill. Previous raids around the world, including at a desert gas plan in Algeria nine months ago, suggest they are also ready to die.

Kenya mall attack: Somali terror group may include Americans

'Al Shabab is no longer a Somalia problem or a Somalia baby. It is now an international problem,' says one analyst in response to the Kenyan mall attack.

Even as gunfire from Nairobi's Westgate mall siege continued, Kenyan government officials say that nearly all hostages trapped since Saturday have been rescued from the shopping complex, hours after special forces undertook a final assault on Al Shabab militants.

“The number of hostages in the building is minimal if ... there are any left in the building,” said Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary in charge of Internal Security, Joseph Ole Lenku, adding that Kenyan forces were in control of all four floors. The official death toll is now 62, including several diplomats and relatives of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The attacks, claimed by Al Shabab, a Somalia-based Islamist radical group whose name means "the youth," began Saturday when cars of men carrying guns pulled up to the entrance of the Westgate, killing and taking hostages, and unleashing two days of mayhem and bloodshed that have shocked Kenya.

Kenyan forces, supported by FBI and special Israeli forces, battled the 10-15 militants for a third day Monday, amid dramatic explosions and smoke. More than 1,000 people were rescued during the attack, whose brutality has shocked the nation and attracted international condemnation.

The operation is widely being seen as both a payback to Kenya for driving Al Shabab out of urban centers in Somalia, and a publicity initiative to showcase the group's international character, even as its fortunes have been on the wane in its area of principal concern, which is Somalia proper.

In 2010, the group claimed responsibility for bombing a soccer stadium in Uganda, killing more than 70 people.  Kenya said it was forced to send troops into Somalia in 2011 after the militants carried a series of attacks inside Kenya's borders.  Kenya's 4,000 forces have since been integrated into an African Union mission in Somalia.

Al Shabab has suffered a series of defeats, largely at the hands of Kenyan troops or their local proxies, who have driven the militants out of a key stronghold, the port of Kismayo. But the new Somali government accuses Kenya of creating a new proxy state called Jubaland along the common border of the two states.

“Kenya has done a good job in Somalia. They had been neutral up until 2011. The longer they stay in Somalia, the more they will be seen as an occupying force,” says Abdiwahab Shiekh Abdisamad, a Nairobi-based expert on Horn of Africa issues.

AMERICAN-BASED MEMBERS?

On Monday, Al Shabab claimed via Twitter that three of the attackers were American-based, with two of them coming from Minnesota, whose Twin City area has one of the largest single Somali communities in the US, with more than 80,000 people.

The Minnesotans are said to be Ahmed Mohammed Isse of St. Paul and Abdifatah Osman Keenadiid of Minneapolis. Another attacker is Mustafe Noorudiin of Kansas. The militants also supposedly include members from Canada, Finland and the UK. Early eyewitness accounts of the militant by Kenyans suggest they are mostly of ethnic Somali descent.

The FBI is investigating the claims, according to several news sources, and bureau spokesmen in several parts of the United States, including Boston, said it was too early to confirm reports, after a Portland media outlet called to confirm whether one of the attackers was from Maine, as Shabab allegedly reported.

Still, “Al Shabab is no longer a Somalia problem or a Somalia baby. It is now an international problem,” says Mr. Abdisamad.

The Westgate mall is an upscale complex of cafés, shops, and food courts frequented by officials from foreign mission and the United Nations complex a couple miles away. In addition to Al Shabab's stated anger over Kenya's role in Somalia, commentators have noted that Westgate is partly Israeli-owned.

Al Shabab said through a Twitter post that it conducted the attack. Earlier reports and some survivors said the attackers included women. But Mr. Lenku said these were men who had dressed as women to camouflage themselves.

Al Shabab's Twitter account, started last winter, included the statement: “War is war! We promise Kenyans will pay the ultimate price like Ethiopians did in 1998, Americans did 1993… 4000 Kenyans barricading themselves behind our children and women. Our Mujahideen will wipe Kenya off map.”

Officials at the social media firm reportedly shut down the militant group's account on Sunday night.

According to Abdisamad, many of the fighters involved in the attack were not from Somalia, and the group's high-profile attack is being done to give it publicity needed in its own ranks and abroad.

“Al Shabab has a network of supporters from around the world,” he said. “But I think they are being defeated and they are now looking for relevance. What we are seeing are last kick of a dying horse.”

A report from the All Africa website cites clerics calling the attacks "criminal" and not "jihadi" and notes an Islamic conference on extremism held in Somalia last week where 126 religious leaders from Somalia condemned Al Shabab as lacking in Islamic "correctness," and the "wrong path,"  and urged Somalis not to join it.

Today The Daily Beast ran a piece from Jamie Dettmer offering that some counterterrorism experts are concerned that some ethnic Somalis from Minneapolis-St. Paul could have been in the attack, since others from the Somali community there have traveled to and been killed in the Horn of Africa. The Daily Beast included this reporting:

This year, Al-Shabab posted a 40-minute recruitment video, “Minnesota’s Martyrs: The Path to Paradise,” that follows three Americans from the Twin Cities as they go to training camps in Somalia and die for the jihadist cause. One of the young men urges others to follow, saying, “This is the real Disneyland. You need to come here and join us!” The narrator praises the trio as the “Minnesotan martyrs” whose “decisive moment” came when they were martyred in a jihad against foreign troops in Somalia.

One of the three featured was Troy Kastigar, a convert to Islam who was killed in Mogadishu in September 2009, about 10 months after arriving from Minnesota, according to the video. Three other Somali-Americans—Abdisalan Hussein Ali, Farah Mohamed Beledi, and Shirwa Ahmed—became Al-Shabab suicide bombers, dying in blasts in Mogadishu in recent years.

Attackers defeated in mall siege, Kenya's president says

Three floors of the Westgate Mall in Nairobi collapsed during efforts to clear terrorists who had laid siege to the building for four days, trapping bodies inside, President Uhuru Kenyatta said in a televised address Tuesday.

Five of the gunmen were killed in the fighting, Kenyatta said. Eleven other people had been arrested over possible connections to the attack, which left 61 civilians and six security officers dead, 62 people in the hospital and Kenya's reputation as a bulwark of African stability in tatters.

"We have ashamed and defeated our attackers," he said in the address, which capped a four-day ordeal in which Kenyan forces battled Al-Shabaab terrorists for control of the upscale mall.

Earlier in the day, sporadic gunfire could be heard coming from the mall as authorities made their final sweeps through the building.

Some 175 people had been injured, the Kenya Red Cross said.

The fate of civilians who may have still been hiding inside the mall or held hostage by terrorists remained unclear. Earlier, Kenyan authorities had said they believed all hostages had been freed, but the Red Cross said 65 people remained unaccounted for.

How to help

The siege

The harrowing episode began midday Saturday in Nairobi when some 10 to 15 gunmen stormed the mall, shooting indiscriminately, according to witness accounts.

Witnesses said the gunmen went from store to store, shooting people, and then took hostages.

Mwagi Dorcas told CNN's "New Day" on Tuesday that she hid behind luggage in the mall's ground-floor grocery store, memorizing a Muslim prayer sent to her by family in a desperate bid to save her life should attackers find her. Al-Shabaab and some witnesses have said the attackers quizzed shoppers about their faith before deciding whether to kill them, releasing Muslims and targeting many others.

"I was praying the whole time," she said. "I believed that, you know, if I got out, I would be rescued."

Some were spared despite not being Muslim. In one remarkable case reported by The Sun newspaper in Britain, terrorists spared a 4-year-old boy who confronted them, saying, "You're a very bad man."

Al-Shabaab claimed the attack was in retribution for Kenya's involvement in an African Union military expedition that has bruised the terror group in its Somali homeland.

Americans may have been involved, Kenyan authorities said.

Somali jihadists recruit in United States, Canada and Europe

"We have an idea who these people are, and they are clearly a multinational collection from all over the world," Gen. Julius Karangi, chief of Kenya Defense Forces, told reporters Monday in Nairobi. "This is not clearly a local event. We are fighting global terrorism here."

Law enforcement sources said Monday they were scouring intelligence reports for evidence of a U.S. connection to the attack, but a senior U.S. official said Monday the claim was looking less solid as they continued to investigate.

The Kenyan spirit cannot be broken, says eyewitness

Deaths

Most of the 62 known dead civilians are Kenyans, authorities said. Six British citizens, two French nationals, two Indians and two Canadians, including a diplomat, also died, their governments said.

Those killed include:

• Dutch national Elif Yavuz, a senior vaccines researcher for the Clinton Health Access Initiative based in Tanzania. Yavuz was pregnant and expecting her first child in October, said Julio Frenk, dean of faculty at the Harvard School of Public Health. Al Qaeda connection?

The mall siege is the deadliest terror attack in Kenya since al Qaeda blew up the U.S. Embassy there in 1998, killing 213 people.

On Monday, Kenya's foreign minister told CNN it's clear that Al-Shabaab was not acting alone.

"This bears the hallmarks of al Qaeda," Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed said. "This is not just Al-Shabaab. In fact, the leaders are not Somali, as you may have heard. This was al Qaeda. It was a very well-coordinated effort."

Mall Of America(Minnesota) Adding Security In Wake Of Kenya Mall Attack
Posted: Sep 24, 2013 3:58 PM PDT Updated: Sep 24, 2013 5:13 PM PDT

The terrorist attack at a shopping mall in Kenya is prompting increased security at the Mall of America.

The facility sent out a statement stating..."Mall of America continues to monitor the tragic events unfolding in Kenya with the help of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

We are deeply saddened by the events and our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected.

Mall of America has implemented extra security precautions, some may be noticeable to guests, and others won't be.

We will continue to follow the situation, along with law enforcement, and will remain vigilant as we always do in similar situations.

The safety and security of our guests, employees and tenants remains our top priority."

While the River Hills Mall in Mankato did not want to comment on their security procedures, they did say they have taken additional steps in light of the attack in Kenya.

Well, one thing's for sure - AVOID those "gun free zones", which is the LEAST secure of them all.(ie-which Starbucks Coffee called for last week after the Navy Yard shootings)

This is the TRUE FACE OF THIS RELIGION OF PEACE!!!!!

'Eyes gouged out, bodies hanging from hooks, and fingers removed with pliers': Horrific claims of torture emerge as soldiers reveal gory Kenyan mall massacre details
Kenyan soldiers claim to find scenes of torture by mall terrorists
They say children found dead in food fridges with knives still in bodies
Men were said to have been castrated and had fingers removed

Soldiers told of the horrific torture meted out by terrorists in the Nairobi mall massacre yesterday with claims hostages were dismembered, had their eyes gouged out and were left hanging from hooks in the ceiling.

Men were said to have been castrated and had fingers removed with pliers before being blinded and hanged.

Children were found dead in the food court fridges with knives still embedded in their bodies, it was claimed.

Most of the defeated terrorists, meanwhile, were reportedly discovered ‘burnt to ashes’, set alight by the last extremist standing to try to protect their identities.

The horrifying details came yesterday as the first pictures emerged from within the wreckage of the building, showing piles of bodies left strewn across the floor.

A third of the mall was destroyed in the battle between terrorists and Kenyan troops.

Lying in the rubble are feared to be the bodies of as many as 71 civilians who have been declared missing by the Kenyan Red Cross.

With detectives, including the FBI and the Metropolitan Police, still unable to reach the wrecked part of the mall for fear of setting off explosives, it could take up to a week to determine exactly who is still inside.

Yesterday, soldiers and doctors who were among the first people into the mall after it was reclaimed on Tuesday, spoke of the horrifying scenes inside.

‘You find people with hooks hanging from the roof,’ said one Kenyan doctor, who asked not to be named.

‘They removed eyes, ears, nose. They get your hand and sharpen it like a pencil then they tell you to write your name with the blood. They drive knives inside a child’s body.

'Actually if you look at all the bodies, unless those ones that were escaping, fingers are cut by pliers, the noses are ripped by pliers. Here it was pain.’

A soldier, who took pictures at a bread counter and at the ArtCaffe, said he was so traumatised by what he saw he has had to seek counselling.

Bomb disposal experts with sniffer dogs were yesterday painstakingly combing the part of the building still standing for explosives before clearing forensic officers, police and troops to search for bodies.

Images also emerged yesterday revealing the true extent of the destruction caused to the centre during the four-day battle between Kenyan forces and Islamic militants.

The first pictures taken inside the site show a gaping hole in the mall's roof after three storeys collapsed when Kenyan soldiers fired rocket-propelled grenades inside the complex, knocking out a support column, a government official said.

Children's buggies are left abandoned just metres from the yawning pit, as cars hang precariously over the edge. Beneath many more vehicles lie on top of each other, smashed to pieces.

The collapse happened on Monday when government troops launched a massive assault on the mall where up to 150 people are thought to have been killed.

During the firefight, hostages reportedly had their throats slashed from ear to ear and were thrown screaming from third-floor balconies as the siege came to a bloody end. Forensics teams, still sifting through the mountains of rubble, fear many more bodies are yet to be found.

Shell-shocked Kenyan troops said the inside of the Israeli-run mall resembled a ‘scene from a horror movie’ with blood spattered everywhere and dead bodies strewn across the floor.

The main thrust of the operation began at 6am on Monday when troops and helicopters surrounded the building, but their efforts were hampered by an Al Shabaab sniper who managed to pin them back for nearly 24 hours.

As tear gas was used to try to flush him out, another terrorist reportedly blew himself up. It is believed the resulting fire may have killed dozens of shoppers in a supermarket.

The following day, the soldiers were ordered to adopt a 'shoot to kill' policy and launched their final attack on the terror group on the roof of the mall at 5pm.

The mall was retaken about half an hour later

Between 10 and 15 terrorists are thought to have stormed the mall on Saturday, according to Kenyan officials.

The police said five insurgents were killed in the battle and at least 10 taken into custody

Kenya shopping mall attack: Nairobi hostages were tortured before they were killed, says police doctor
Rumours of rapes, disfigurement and beheadings are rife in Kenya’s capital

A police doctor scouring Nairobi’s Westgate mall for bodies after a four-day siege by Islamist gunmen that claimed dozens of lives has said victims were tortured before they died, according to a Kenyan newspaper.

“Those are not allegations. Those are f****** truths,” the doctor, a forensics expert, told The Star newspaper. “They removed balls, eyes, ears, nose. They get your hand and sharpen it like a pencil then they tell you to write your name with the blood. They drive knives inside a child’s body. Actually, if you look at all the bodies, unless those ones that were escaping, fingers are cut by pliers, the noses are ripped by pliers.”

The information could not be independently verified, but William Pike, the British editor of The Star, said the reporters working on the story had been given similar accounts from other sources. “We have [the source] on a recording,” Mr Pike said. “He was talking very graphically, and he was very angry.”

The horrifying details of what may be the last moments of some of the hostages at the hands of terrorists from Somalia’s al-Shabaab movement come amid mounting public anger over the authorities silence about the details of the siege. Many questions remain, such as what happened to the potentially dozens of hostages still unaccounted for? What happened to the attackers? And what caused parts of Westgate to collapse in the final hours of the siege?

Police have asked for patience as they begin the painstaking work of gathering evidence and searching for bodies, with Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku warning it could take up to a week to complete the search. He has said that an “insignificant” number of bodies are still trapped.

Gunmen armed with machine guns and grenades stormed the Westgate mall on Saturday lunchtime, shooting indiscriminately, and killing at least 61 people. A further six security officers died in attempts to rout the militants. During the siege, rescuers evacuated many survivors, but reports suggested hostages were being held by militants. Kenya’s Red Cross says that 71 people are still listed as missing.

Ghoulish accounts on the fate of the hostages have circulated Nairobi and there have been claims that the military was forced to blow up part of the Westgate complex not just to bring the siege to an end, but to end the appalling suffering of hostages amid reports that hostages were raped, and others beheaded and their heads thrown out of the windows.

None of these reports could be verified amid what is a febrile atmosphere in the city following the worst terrorist attack on Kenyan soil since the US embassy bombings by Al-Qa’ida in 1998 that killed more than 200.

Allegations of **** are not commonly linked with Islamist militants, although there are increasing numbers of **** cases reported in Somalia after long years of conflict.

Meanwhile, Kenyan authorities are also facing questions over whether they had any intelligence on an impending attack, which a Somali al-Shabaab chief said was a “message to Westerners” who had “backed Kenya’s invasion [of Somalia],” a reference to Kenya’s 2011 incursion aimed at crushing the militant movement.

Kenya’s National Intelligence Agency (NIS), widely accused by politicians of failing to pick up chatter about the attack, has insisted it did warn the police and officials inside the President’s office before the Westgate siege, but its warnings went unheeded, The Star reported.

According to the same report, a pregnant policewoman avoided Westgate after her brother, who works for Kenyan intelligence, warned her of a terror attack. “She has told police that her brother who is a NIS officer warned her not to visit Westgate that Saturday because she would not be able to run,” a senior officer was quoted as saying.
