‘BEWARE OF THE TATTOO PREACHER’

A TORY MP has warned Britons to be wary of claims made by a Canadian preacher who says he can cure cancer and raise the dead.

Thousands have been flocking to hear tattooed former Hell’s Angel Todd Bentley speak at a church in Cwmbran in South Wales, where he is holding revivalist meetings until Thursday.

Last Thursday night he told his audience he had brought 33 people back from the dead and cured more than 100 deaf mutes of their handicap.

Tory MP David Davies, whose Monmouth constituency covers part of Cwmbran, said: “I go to church and respect Christian beliefs, but I am concerned that some of the claims made by Mr Bentley are far fetched and should be treated cautiously.”

Evangelist Bentley, 35, says he had a “miraculous conversion” which saved him from “youth prisons, drugs, sex, satanic music and bondage”.

He told his audience: “In 13 years of preaching we’ve had 33 stories of resurrections from the dead – 20 of them medically verified.

“Everywhere we go we get testimony from someone who has been close to death, had stage four cancer or some incurable terminal condition and received a miracle.

“There would be nights where 30 people would get out of wheelchairs, incredible miracles, thousands of people would be saved every day.

“I prayed for 139 deaf mutes and we had 139 deaf and mute people hear and speak for the first time.

“Some people say miracles are not possible but for me it’s impossible that someone is not healed.”

After his performance at Two Locks Church, Bentley told the Sunday Express: “When we had people raised from the dead doctors called them resuscitations. They were miraculously resuscitated, the doctors didn’t say they were, because they don’t have the terminology for divine

“I believe in healing whether I have medical verification or not.”

Bentley, who is in Wales with his second wife Jessa, said: “People get cynical because of my background and my appearance and they have an idea of how they think a minister should look.

“I’ve had a lot of public things in my life, I’ve not been perfect and I haven’t done this perfectly either, but I acknowledge my failures and I use my failures to give people strength and hope because really we are all failures in one sense or another.”

He has claimed he can cure cancer by kicking tumours out of bodies with his biker boots. He said: “It’s not something I do regularly but I do have some stories where I’ve been preaching and the faith will come on me.

“I’ve been in a meeting and a woman has a tumour on her face and I heard a voice inside of me, I knew it was the Lord and he said, ‘Pull it off’.”

People travelled from as far away as Germany and Norway to see Bentley on Thursday. Those with conditions ranging from stomach cancer and heart disease to broken bones and arthritic knees queued to be “healed”.

Lucinda Rodregis, 68, has angina. She said: “I can’t climb the hill near my home because it’s too strenuous, but tomorrow I’m going to try and if I can do that then I’ve been healed.

“But I didn’t come here to be cured I came to see Todd Bentley, I just love what God does through him.”

MP calls for ban on tattooed preacher who 'cures' cancer by kicking people in the face

Canadian Todd Bentley launches UK tour in Croydon later this month

An evangelist who kicks followers in the face, claiming his violence will cure them of cancer, is to tour Britain this month – but his proposed visit has provoked outrage and demands that he be banned from entering the country.

Tattooed preacher Todd Bentley,  who as a 15-year-old was convicted of a sex attack on a boy aged seven, claims God uses him as an instrument to heal the sick, and is urging the frail to attend his shows.

The former drug user, who is Canadian but based in the United States, even laughs about his ‘healing’  techniques. In one show he treated a man claiming to be suffering from colon cancer by planting his knee hard into the victim’s stomach. The man fell to the floor in agony.

On another occasion, a man was pushed over so forcefully that he lost a tooth.

Burly Mr Bentley, 36, said in one YouTube clip: ‘And I’m thinking  why is the power of God not moving? And He said, “Because you haven’t kicked that woman in the face.”

‘And there is this older lady worshipping right in front of the platform and the Holy Spirit spoke to me. The gift of faith comes on me. He said, “Kick her in the face with your biker boot.” I inched closer  and I went bam! And just as my boot made contact with her nose, she fell under the power of God.’

Labour MP for Croydon North Malcolm Wicks has urged Home Secretary Theresa May to ban Mr Bentley from the UK. He told her: ‘His visit can do nothing but harm and I would be grateful for any measures you can take.’

Mr Bentley launches his tour at the 400-capacity Croydon Conference Centre in South London with three shows from August 30, before visiting Liverpool, Cwmbran and  Co Armagh in September.

Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, the former Bishop of Rochester who now runs a church education charity, said: ‘I think the Home Secretary should make enquiries and see if there is any threat to public order. If the police have any indication that violence will be used against people who may be ill or vulnerable, it will be for her to decide if police should attend.’

Peter May, a prominent Christian GP who served for 25 years on the Church of England’s ruling General Synod, and has investigated spurious faith healers for more than 20 years, said: ‘I’m concerned by Todd Bentley’s methods because a physical injury on any sick person could be very serious.

'I’ve looked at the video clips on his forum and it requires significant impact for someone to lose a tooth. There may be people who are Christians who believe their health has been transformed, but I believe Todd Bentley should produce the medical evidence. I would urge people to keep away from him.’

The preacher came to prominence four years ago through his church, Fresh Fire Ministries, which launched a Christian ‘revival’ in Lakeland, Florida. The event, which attracted 400,000 people, was also on international channel God TV. Mr Bentley claims he cured viewers at home.

Shanee Lemos, who is organising the UK tour, denied the preacher used violence. He said: ‘I’ve worked with Todd for a long time and I’ve never seen him kick someone.’

He added: ‘Even the terminally ill or people with a few days left to live are encouraged to come along and Todd will attempt to cure them.’

A Croydon Conference Centre  spokesman would not be drawn on Mr Bentley’s methods. Mr Bentley said: ‘Kicking people in the face is not a practice of our ministry and I do not see this happening in the UK.’

Lakeland revival was cancelled when Bentley ditched his family for a young staffer.

Quote
Divorce issue

Bentley announced his separation from his wife, Shonnah, in August 2008,[1][31] and resigned from the Board of Fresh Fire.[32] A statement released by the remaining Board members said "Todd Bentley has entered into an unhealthy relationship on an emotional level with a female member of his staff", and that he would 'refrain from all public ministry for a season to receive counsel in his personal life'.[33][34]

Some of Bentley's Christian contemporaries called for Bentley to step down in the wake of the scandal, stating that Christian leadership is incompatible with marital unfaithfulness.[35][36] In response, a committee made up of Rick Joyner, Jack Deere, and Bill Johnson was formed to oversee the process of spiritually restoring Bentley's family.[37] In November 2008, the Board of Fresh Fire announced that Bentley was not submitting to the process.[38][39] On March 9, 2009, Rick Joyner announced that Bentley had remarried.[2][40][41]

A 2009 Charisma magazine interview with Rick Joyner refuted adultery claims while characterizing the relationship as wrong and premature. Joyner told Charisma that the new couple was committed to their marriage and would “continue to serve the Lord in the best way that they can.”[39]

Joyner tried to start Bentley’s ministry up in his Morningstar church but several pastors were not having any of it. They confronted him we-are-change style.

Public Rebuke of Todd Bentley with text of what was said

I guess they figure enough time has passed to try to promote Bentley in the UK.

‘Faith Healer’ Todd Bentley Called Out as False Prophet by Man With Cerebral Palsy: Video

A man confined to a wheelchair due to his struggles with cerebral palsy gave a face-to-face warning to ‘faith healer’ Todd Bentley this past Thursday in front of a live audience that had gathered for Bentley’s healing crusade.

Justin Peters, who runs Justin Peters Ministries in Oklahoma, attended the event to rebuke Bentley over what he believes are deceptive healing practices. Not knowing that he was about to be excoriated, Bentley handed the microphone over to Peters.

Peters then began to quote from Matthew 7, which speaks of those who do wonders in God’s name but live lawless lives,  in presenting the rebuke to Bentley.

“And Jesus will look at them and he [will say], ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you workers of iniquity,” he declared. “This man is a worker of iniquity.”

“Which man?” Bentley asked, standing adjacent to Peters.

“You,” Peters answered, who continued preaching until he was escorted off stage.

Peters is certainly not the first to chastise Bentley, who is plastered in tattoos, facial piercings and various pieces of jewelry. Over a decade ago, reports began circulating that Bentley was becoming violent on stage and claiming that the Lord told him to do it.

“And I’m thinking, why is the power of God not moving? And He said, ‘Because you haven’t kicked that woman in the face,’” he explained during a meeting, which was captured on video. “And there is this old lady worshipping right in front of the platform and the Holy Spirit spoke to me. The gift of faith comes on me. He said, ‘Kick her in the face with your biker boot.’”

“I inched closer and I went bam! And just as my boot made contact with her nose, she fell under the power of God,” Bentley stated to the laughing crowd.

The woman he referred to was a senior citizen that was fighting cancer.

In another instance, Bentley spoke of a “Chinese guy” that he “hit so hard that a tooth popped out of his mouth.”

He has also reportedly placed attendees in chokeholds and has boasted of “grounding and pounding” the sick — all in the name of God. At times, he refers to discussions with an angel named Emma.

In 2009, Bentley divorced his wife Shonnah after admitting to having an affair with intern Jessa Hasbrook, who also served as a nanny at the Bentley residence.

“Todd admits to being 100 percent responsible for the divorce,” members of the board of directors of Fresh Fire Ministries wrote in a public letter. “With the development of more friction in his marriage relationship, Todd began to make irrational decisions. Alcohol, movies and leisure time spent with a few of the younger, more impressionable members of his staff and road-crew began to replace the hours of soaking in the presence of God in which Todd had engaged during the early days of the Outpouring.”

“We believe that there are currently no Biblical grounds for Todd to leave his wife and children,” the letter continued.

Rick Joyner, Jack Deere and Bill Johnson were appointed to help reconcile the marriage, but all efforts failed. Bentley later married Hasbrook and travels with her today.

Demoniac False Preacher Todd Bentley Says Angel Feathers Manifesting At Revival Meetings

On his official Facebook page, Todd Bentley posted on April 12th of this year that he had 'proof' that 'angel wings and gemstones' were manifesting themselves at revival meetings like the one in Fresno California.  Cheesy

On his official Facebook page, Todd Bentley posted on April 12th of this year that he had ‘proof’ that ‘angel wings and gemstones’ were manifesting themselves at revival meetings like the one in Fresno California.

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” 2 Timothy 4:3,4 (KJV)

The Bible never once says that, in the last days of the Church Age, there will be revival. In fact, it says the opposite. It says that people will grow cold, reject sound doctrine, and begin to surround themselves with false teachers telling them exciting things that tickle their ears. Jesus Himself said that the last Church before the Rapture, the Laodicean Church of our time, will be focused only on money and prosperity and boot Jesus to the curb. But don’t let a silly trifling thing like the authority of the King James Bible stop you from having fake revival anyway. This seems to be the stance of the New Apostolic Reformation cult movement. And yes, I called them a cult.

Meet the false revival insanity of Todd Bentley:

On his official Facebook page, Todd Bentley posted on April 12th of this year that he had ‘proof’ that ‘angel wings and gemstones’ were manifesting themselves at revival meetings like the one in Fresno California. Here is the ‘evidence’ he presented:

Funny thing about those ‘angel wings’ Bentley says are manifesting, in the Bible angels are never presented as having wings. Not one time. Angels in the Bible are always seen as male, and always without wings. Perhaps he is getting confused between angels and seraphims, who are seen with wings. And what would be the purpose of having ‘gemstones’ showing up at revival meetings? Not only did that never happen in the Bible, it boggles the mind to think that God would cheapen a true revival experience with something so crass and tawdry as money. This is how God views the mixing of money with the Holy Spirit:

“And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.” Acts 8:18-23 (KJV)

Here is a ‘revival update of the dramatic moving of the Holy Ghost reported by Bentley:

In our first 24 hours in Fresno we have witnessed some incredible miracles. The greatest miracle is 26 decisions for Christ including a sweet lady from Punjab India! The Lord has impressed on me that it is a season of revival Harvest about to take place in the USA! Many revivals in the past have been the Glory, healing, joy, fire and great expressions of the heart of God. This new season of revival and awakening must be the harvest in America. Salvation must be the forefront focus. We have witnessed over 315,000 salvations since Fresno Fire revival last August and are now expecting a million souls to be saved this year. Please pray for us as the miracle realm is easy here in Fresno and we have already had 3 deaf ears healed, vision restored, testimonies of cancer, arthritis and many other glorious miracles as the Lord is moving!

Revival is in the air and I know as the wind of the Spirit blows it will spread everywhere quickly! This revival season will be a moving revival touching coast to coast.

Oklahoma , Saint Louis Revival Harvest visions!

During the last two weeks I have had a open vision of a large revival breakthrough angel standing over the St. Louis archway bridge. The Holy Spirit spoke to me that St. Louis is a major gateway to revival and it would be a key place for the revival of harvest! I saw in the vision a breakthrough revival angel blowing a long silver Jubilee trumpet. The angel also was blowing and releasing the winds of change! There will be a a great St. Louis Missouri outpouring of miracle harvest! I saw many souls coming to Christ. The vision continued as I saw three other angels in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Wichita Kansas. They were also key areas of revival and harvest. I saw a large harvest net released over these cities. I then saw revival connections as the Angels moved out over Interstates 35, 40 and 44 through Oklahoma City, Tulsa and into Kansas and as far as St Louis Missouri with the strongest release of Harvest power beginning in St Louis Missouri.

My, my, that is certainly a lot of activity. I don’t doubt that the people attending those ‘revivals’ are all hopped up on emotion, manipulation, and who knows whatever else. As these videos show, Todd Bentley is pretty good and ‘working the room’, but that’s all it is. None of what he claims, and none of what he preaches can be found in the Bible in any dispensation. Even the actual apostles did not experience a ‘manifestation of the Holy Ghost’ like Bentley claims. Not one time.

Bentley is not alone in the false prophet business, he has a lot of company. Bethel Church, the New Apostolic Reformation, Azusa Now, are all involved with the phony outpouring of these fake revivals. Bethel Church in Redding, California, is holding meetings that are producing ‘angel feathers, gold dust and diamonds‘ if you can believe that. They certainly do. But guess what? It’s 100% false. And if angel feathers and gold dust really are manifesting, you can be rest assured that it is a manifestation of the Devil.

'Faith Healer' Todd Bentley Admits Sending Texts 'Beyond Pornography' After Associates Go Public With Claims of 'Sexual Perversion'

Controversial “faith healer” and false teacher Todd Bentley — who once boasted about how God told him to kick a woman in the face with his biker boot — took to Facebook on Friday to address numerous allegations of moral impropriety, including claims of homosexual advances toward interns and other sexually-related sins. Bentley, who divorced his wife in 2009 for a ministry assistant with whom he was having an affair, is denying most of the allegations and only admits to sending texts “beyond pornography” as he is being confronted about sins past and present from former associates who have gone public about his behavior.

Christian News Network has reviewed testimony and evidence from several of those who have made various allegations, including one man who was ordained under Bentley in 2016 — after the stated time of “restoration” — and says that he personally witnessed Bentley using sexual speech during his travels.

“I was in a place where I shouldn’t have been taking those thoughts that weren’t right and having those kind of conversations with people that I thought were friends and brothers that I … could really trust,” Bentley said in the 41-minute live video. “But nevertheless, I repented.”

BACKGROUND

A man who once traveled with Bentley came forward on Thursday with the allegations after initially personally contacting Rick Joyner, the leader of MorningStar Ministries and an overseer for Bentley. He says that he did not seek out the information, but others began coming to him to express concern about Bentley’s behavior.

“I believe that Todd has a perverse sexual addiction that he picked up when he was a young man through his dark demonic childhood and through him being abused as a kid,” Stephen Powell wrote on Facebook.

“I believe that that same demonic entity uses Todd to prey on others that have come into Todd’s ministry with their guard down because they felt all was safe being in the presence of an anointed man of God,” he said.

Powell outlined that he has screenshots from at least two women who received messages from Bentley that were inappropriate, including asking one repeatedly for “pictures of herself.” Christian News Network reviewed these screenshots, which include remarks such as “You have great eyes,” “That’s a great photo. Wow,” and “What [are] you wearing today?”

Powell also explained that he has testimony from others who allegedly received sexual advances from Bentley, such as male interns who were offered money for sex acts or photographs, and one who said they caught Bentley with pornography on his phone.

Others alleged that they had heard Bentley engage in crude, sexual speech and that he had a problem with drunkenness.

However, while the testimony mostly comes from others, Powell says that he witnessed concerning behavior himself while traveling with Bentley.

“I myself have seen things over the years that I find very disturbing. I myself have seen Todd preach, pray, and prophesy over the people, only to leave the meeting, purchase hard liquor, and walk into his hotel to party the rest of the night,” he wrote. “I myself have seen and heard Todd and Jessa speak with unclean/foul speech.”

Powell stated that he himself used “locker room talk” for a time and the Lord convicted him of it, adding, “with the vile culture that has infiltrated the charismatic church, it is extremely difficult at times to have fellowship with other ministers, and build alliances with others for the kingdom, and not be affected by this stuff.”

BENTLEY’S PUBLIC CONFESSION

On Friday, Bentley took to social media to address the allegations, during which time he said that he’s “not a homosexual” or “having ****-infused parties” or engaged in “swinging,” but admitted that in 2013, he had sent “a lot” of sexually-charged texts about his wife to other men.

“I had them with associates, interns. They were sexually suggestive,” Bentley admitted. “Some of the texts, in nature, were outright inappropriate to have these conversations, even about Jessa. Things that were in our marriage bed and things that should have never been out there, and talk and fantasy, and I’ve had to own that. It’s embarrassing to have it out in public now.”

“There was degrading communication, not just jokes or brief lapses of judgment, but these things were on a darker level,” he continued. “There were things in me from my past that I needed to confront, beyond pornography. We’ve struggled, many men, with pornography, but this is beyond that.”

Bentley said that he denied his sin at first and tried to “cover it up,” but “friends would not let me do this.” He stated that he stepped away from Fresh Fire for six months due to his behavior and has been in counseling for years.

“During this long season, I have continued to pursue, even in my heart, true deep repentance,” Bentley said, reading from a statement he said was crafted with the assistance of his accountability team. “I need to be free and I want to walk in purity and holiness, and the Lord has called us all to that.”

“My staff and I have also worked to bring more holiness into our dealings with each other, keeping each other accountable to eliminate foolish practice [and] borderline behavior,” he stated. “I think I’ve made a great deal of progress. I’m still battling to be totally free or a lot of the darkness that gripped me during my lifestyle before Christ even. I’m still being delivered.”

While Bentley admitted in his statement that he was still struggling, he also asserted in his Facebook video that the situation had been dealt with in 2013 but that the allegations had “forced” him to go public and that he’s not in any “ongoing sin.”

ALLEGATIONS BEYOND STATED 2013 RESTORATION

However, on Sunday, Ben Burges of Healing Word Ministries issued a letter outlining that he was ordained under Fresh Fire Ministries in 2016, and that during his travels with Bentley, he witnessed firsthand Bentley engaging in crude sexual jesting, including in the presence to a female intern, who he says turned red with embarrassment.

“Todd’s response was, ‘Oh, get over it. You better get used to [sexual act] soon; you are about to get married,” Burges wrote.

He also says that Bentley is “no longer welcome in Pakistan among the leaders and churches he works with” due to allegations of sexual impropriety against three young women. Burges traveled with Bentley to Pakistan in 2017.

“My concern is that considering Todd’s past that there appears to be a growing amount of red flags in Todd’s life, and I would have thought that after Lakeland there would be an appearance to walk in a manner that is worthy of the call of Christ and avoid the appearance of these things in this letter,” Burges wrote.

“My concern is that if these things are not handled properly by leadership that Todd cannot get the help he needs,” he added. “There are people that are sexually scarred for life, and if leaders don’t handle this properly it will be because of the negligence of leaders that choose to not handle this appropriately.”

Bentley had gone through a “restoration” process once before in 2009 after he divorced his wife, Shonnah, and married his assistant, Jessa.

Bentley is known for his wild “faith healing” practices, stating during one meeting years ago that God had told him that there wasn’t movement during the service “ecause you haven’t kicked that woman in the face.”

“And there is this older lady worshiping right in front of the platform and the Holy Spirit spoke to me. The gift of faith comes on me. He said, ‘Kick her in the face with your biker boot,'” he claimed. “I inched closer and I went bam! And just as my boot made contact with her nose, she fell under the power of God.”

Bentley is also stated to have written an article in 2008 in which he outlined that Bob Jones of the Kansas City prophetic movement once asked him if he had ever met the angel “Emma,” as she had purportedly been of assistance to Jones and others during the 1980s. Bentley says that within weeks, Emma appeared during a service in North Dakota.

“She glided into the room, emitting brilliant light and colors. Emma carried these bags and began pulling gold out of them. Then as she walked up and down the aisles of the church, she began putting gold dust on people,” he wrote. “‘God, what is happening?’ I asked. The Lord answered, ‘She is releasing the gold which is both the revelation and the financial breakthrough that I am bringing into this church.'”

“During this visitation the pastor’s wife got totally whacked by the Holy Ghost — she began running around barking like a dog or squawking like a chicken as a powerful prophetic spirit came on her,” Bentley continued. “Also, as this prophetic anointing came on her, she started getting phone numbers of complete strangers and calling them on the telephone and prophesying over them.”

A controversial video posted to YouTube also shows Jessa Bentley convulsing violently during a service as she told those gathered about a dream in which Oral Roberts put his hands over her eyes and she saw a vision of an elephant and a lion.

Christian News Network left a voicemail on a private number obtained for Bentley to seek specificity on the claims being denied and to inquire about a timeline of events. The article will be updated accordingly should more information be received.

Todd Bentley sexual misconduct allegations widen to Pakistan

IM GONNA KICK ME A GRANDMA!!

Sexual misconduct allegations against Fresh Fire USA leader Todd Bentley have now snowballed to include reports from victims overseas, according to Stephen Powell, the estranged protégé of the popular and controversial faith healer, whom he dismissed in a report last Thursday as “not fit for public ministry.”

“I’ve just had a written statement submitted by a pastor last night of all kinds of stuff, including how he is talking to multiple leaders in Pakistan that are claiming that Todd sexually assaulted three girls over there … I don’t know the exact nature of it but they used the word sexually assaulted. … We’re trying now to get the written statement from the (Pakistani) pastors themselves,” Powell told The Christian Post in an interview Monday.

He said they were being very careful in handling these allegations because “these girls, they are in the Muslim world. It is a very sensitive issue.”

Ben Burges of Healing Word Ministries, who said he was ordained under Fresh Fire USA in 2016, also mentioned the allegations in a letter cited by Christian News Network, noting that Bentley is “no longer welcome in Pakistan among the leaders and churches he works with” as a result of the allegations. Burges reportedly traveled with Bentley to Pakistan in 2017.

Burges also noted that during his travels with Bentley, he witnessed the evangelist jesting in a crude sexual manner with a female intern.

“Todd’s response was, ‘Oh, get over it. You better get used to [sexual act] soon; you are about to get married,” Burges noted.

“My concern is that if these things are not handled properly by leadership that Todd cannot get the help he needs,” Burges added. “There are people that are sexually scarred for life, and if leaders don’t handle this properly it will be because of the negligence of leaders that choose to not handle this appropriately.”

A Fresh Fire USA representative told CP Wednesday morning that Bentley would not be doing any interviews and when asked about the allegations coming out of Pakistan said, “I can’t respond for him.”

Powell, who leads the Lion of Light Ministries, first teased bits of a yet to be made public 30-page report on Facebook last Thursday in which he alleged Bentley has a “perverse sexual addiction” that has driven him to prey on interns in 2013 and beyond.

In his Facebook statement, Powell, who believes he got a mandate from God to call wayward Christian leaders to repentance, alleged Bentley “has an appetite for a variety of sexual sins, including both homosexual and heterosexual activity.” He also accused the evangelist of indulging in an open marriage with his wife Jessa. His report further criticized Bentley’s restoration process stemming from moral failure in 2008.

The 30-page report is said to have been shared with more than 100 leaders in the charismatic movement and some who have read it call it “damning.”

“I have seen the report. It’s bad. It’s bad,” Apostle Derrick Gates of Derrick Gates Ministries, who described himself as having working relationships with both Powell and Bentley, told CP Tuesday.

Powell confirmed with CP that Gates, who said he was also previously a member of Bentley’s camp, had joined him in confronting Bentley with evidence from the report earlier this summer. Bentley, Powell said, initially denied the allegations until he later began admitting to only parts of it.

Bentley has since publicly admitted to sending suggestive text messages to his interns in 2013 but vehemently denied any misconduct since that time. He also denied any homosexual conduct while arguing that many of the allegations made against him in Powell’s report are unproven, false and exaggerated.

Hard to deny

Some charismatic leaders argue, however, that based on what they have read in Powell’s report it might be difficult for Bentley to counter.

“My understanding from Stephen is that anything that made it into the report was stuff that had substantial evidence to back it up and people that were willing to back it up,” Gates said.

“Is there a possibility that some people may have had an axe to grind and make something up? That’s a possibility. But he (Bentley) would have to prove that they [all] made it up. When you look at that report, you have I don’t know how many different people and different stories that there are and they, the people, don’t know each other and they have the same type of stories. To me, that’s what makes it so damning. You have all these different stories and they all line up. I don’t know how you defend against that. I hope he can,” Gates said.

Powell said he has evidence showing that Bentley’s alleged predation continued beyond 2013 despite the evangelist completing a years-long restoration process in 2012 that was overseen by Rick Joyner, author of The Final Quest and founder of Morning Star Ministries and Heritage International Ministries; Bill Johnson, senior leader of Bethel Church in Redding, California; and Jack Deere, former leader of Wellspring Church in North Richland Hills, Texas.

Bentley was supposedly restored after he admitted to an emotional relationship with a staff member in 2008, which resulted in him separating from his now ex-wife Shonnah. It was also the same year that Bentley emerged as a superstar in the charismatic movement at the Lakeland Revival in Florida, which attracted an average of 30,000 or more people each week that came from across the U.S. and around the world.

In an open letter published on Tuesday, Ron Cantor, host of the “Out of Zion” television show on GOD TV, who leads Messiah's Mandate International, said there was strong evidence that Bentley has not been completely honest about his repentance.

“I was shown all the evidence, including recorded testimony. I also saw the letters that Stephen wrote to Rick Joyner. There is no threat, just disappointment that a leader in the body doesn’t seem to take these allegations seriously. Unlike what Rick Joyner continues to say—most of the allegations are not false,” he said. “For that to be true, all of these people (about a dozen) must be lying and have no fear of God. This includes a pastor, who just this May, saw a woman in Todd’s hotel room ‘till late nights and early mornings ALONE’ and his witnessed a pattern of extreme lying. He has banned Todd from going on their mission trips.”

He continued: “It includes asking a young single admirer by text to take photos of herself for him—he tells her she is beautiful, and then asks her what she is wearing. She immediately blocked him. Imagine that! She is talking to one of her heroes, and by the end of the conversation she has to block him for acting in a perverted way. What do you think that did to the girl? And Rick is still only talking about Todd in his videos…never the victims!”

Cantor argued that even for a “grace and mercy oriented” person like himself, the evidence against Bentley is just too compelling for him to remain in public ministry.

“I am not a nitpicker or faultfinder. I am not a hyper-holiness preacher. I am not super religious or legalistic. I am much more grace and mercy oriented. But I am telling you, I have seen the evidence and it is bad; it is creepy—and it is not pre-2013. I don’t know what is up with Rick Joyner, but I have been told he has seen this. I don’t know a leader in the body who, after seeing this, if they had the authority, and Rick does (even though he is claiming he doesn’t) who would not pull Todd from public ministry. I am dumbfounded. If Rick Joyner knows something I don’t, I am all ears. He knows how to contact me. But it is hard for me to believe that all of these people are making up stories. They have no motive."

Charismatic movement rocked

The charismatic movement is an interdenominational Christian renewal effort and is one of the most popular and fastest-growing forces within the Christian world today. It is most known for its acceptance of speaking in tongues (also known as glossolalia), divine healing, and prophecies as evidence of the Holy Spirit.

Powell would not share a copy of his report on Bentley and none of the more than 100 leaders who have a copy of it have shared it publicly. When asked why it is being guarded so tightly, Gates suggested that many leaders are concerned about how it could impact the charismatic movement.

“I think it’s probably because it’s so critical. If I could even say this, it’s so crude the things that are in it. Some people are of the idea that the body of Christ can’t take it. People are worried that it’s going to hurt the body too bad to see it. Probably everybody has their different reasons,” Gates said.

He further noted that the allegations against Bentley represent one of the biggest scandals to hit the charismatic movement in America in a while.

“I really do think so and it’s sad in a lot of ways. In a lot of ways I feel bad for Todd because if in the end, Todd is guilty, if that’s what they say, if that’s what comes out then in a weird way, I don’t want to seem critical of anybody, but in a weird way, Todd’s a victim,” he said.

Bentley’s botched restoration

Gates argued that based on what he has read in Powell’s report, Bentley’s restoration from his 2008 moral failure and eventual return to ministry was poorly handled.

“This reminds me of a football player that comes straight out of high school and is into college but he is not a good student," Gates said. "But he is really good at his gift which is playing. So what they do is every time he gets injured instead of sitting him down and let him get an education, and work him slowly back into it they just give him a shot in the knee and forget the grades and get him back out on the field until his senior year of college he blows his knee out and he’s done for the rest of his life and now he doesn’t have an education … but they used him for his gift.”

“That’s what the charismatic movement did to Todd by not getting him healed right in the beginning. Not having him healed right and get deep deliverance and get deep therapy and making sure that his family was right. For me, restoration is not about ministry. Restoration is about your salvation and your family. At the end of the day, it’s not about signs, miracles and wonders. Who could care less about that? Let’s care about salvation and your family and your relationship with God.”

If it were left up to R. Loren Sandford, senior pastor at New Song Church and Ministries in Denver, Bentley would never have been allowed to return to ministry after his 2008 moral failure based on the “mockery” he understood Bentley made of his restoration process.

“Once more Todd Bentley is being exposed in heinous sin. On several occasions after the fall of the Lakeland Revival in 2008, as I ministered both out of the country and here in the US, I was publicly asked what I thought about Todd’s restoration to ministry,” he began in a post on Facebook Monday.

“I had inside information concerning how he made what I considered to be a mockery of his restoration process. On more than one occasion as I answered the question I felt the wrath of God impact me and flow through me with such force that I saw stars and, in one instance, my vision went black for a moment. My answer was that I have personally overseen four restoration processes and that, if Todd had been under my care, having pulled what he pulled, he would never be allowed to stand on a stage again. Based on what he did, he can never make his current marriage right."

Joyner, who said he knew Bentley would mess up again when he signed off on his restoration in 2012, disagreed. He described Powell as a liar and argued that he is operating in a spirit of witchcraft by publicly calling out the Fresh Fire USA leader.

“If a brother is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore them, and do it in a spirit of gentleness lest we too be tempted. So I’ve resolved to obey that. I’m not going to turn away from anyone who is caught in any trespass. And I’ll be honest with you, working with some really public figures … my whole concept of any trespass got so stretched. And my concept of what God would give His grace and mercy to got so stretched. Even the deplorable things that Todd did do in this case, to me, they weren’t shocking anymore. And I’ve seen God help people through things way worse,” Joyner said.

He said Bentley got counseling and repented of the things he did in 2013, and he along with others will investigate the other allegations made by Powell. He suggested as well that the exposure will benefit both his ministry and Bentley’s as well.

Louis DeSiena, senior leader at The Gate Church in Jacksonville, Florida, who leads the Kingdom Revival Alliance where Bentley is also a leader, argued that the evangelist has already repented and suggested that Powell’s disclosure was a vindictive move to destroy the evangelist’s ministry.

“I don’t want to excuse what Todd did, but I have found no evidence to this point of affairs … only loose talk,” DeSiena said in a Facebook video.

“I believe in restoration, I don’t believe in the restoration process so much …. None of us are done ever being restored. That’s just the truth. None of us … would never come to a place where we have arrived … I love that Jesus has never told me once in repentance, ‘now only if you swear to never do it again will I forgive you.' That’s never been a mandate of the Lord. We’re to forgive when our brothers confess their sins and then they were to seek repentance from God in a place of renewal and get back to the place they were. And that’s my goal, is always to get people back in ministry,” he said.

“What Todd did disgusted me and when Todd realized what he had done, disgusted him,” DeSiena said.

He said while he was in India, Bentley sat with him and “confessed everything in his life to me … all the way back to when he was 10 years old and it was pretty rough.

“I looked at him and said ‘brother, I forgive you, you are forgiven.’ That’s my role. When someone confesses their sin to us our job is to forgive them. Jesus didn’t give us another option,” he argued.

“It’s only when somebody does not ask for forgiveness that we are to sit there and now take it to a new level.”

He then explained that Powell had threatened Bentley with the report of his alleged failings for six weeks and refused to share it with the ministry. He further noted that they were only able to get a copy of the report after he had shared it with the group of more than 100 pastors.

Powell told CP, however, that he only withheld the report from DeSiena and others on Bentley’s leadership team because he was concerned that they would attempt to twist it and work to discredit him.

Misguided theology of forgiveness?

Despite the allegations against Bentley, many of his followers continue to support his ministry, stating, like his ministry leaders, that he has already been forgiven by God for his moral failures.

Valerie Cooper, associate professor of Religion and Society and Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School, told CP in an earlier interview that this behavior is often due to what she calls a “sloppy theology of forgiveness.”

She explained that they are unable to separate the transformative work that the pastor has done in their lives from the destructive behavior.

"They look at this situation and say, 'now the pastor is in trouble, I need to show up for pastor like pastor showed up for me.' And there has not been, unfortunately, I think there is a need for the development of a way to think about this theologically," she said.

"There is a really great need for some thoughtful and theological attention to how individual Christians, our obligation, for when a crisis of this nature takes place. What is the Christian's obligation to forgive? What is the leader's obligation to repent?" asked Cooper.

"There has been some discussion about people stepping down and stepping out of the pulpit and invariably those decisions are made in the context of the economic pressure 'I need a job.'

"So pastors get caught but they don't step out of the pulpit … that's across races and denominations and traditions, and the like. I think we need to just think seriously about how or if it's possible for a pastor to be restored."

She continued, "We have, I think, a very sloppy theology of forgiveness — that 'Oh, he said he was sorry, we forgive him.' I think that the consensus that is emerging, and it's not just a theological consensus but also a legal consensus, is that organizations have an obligation to protect the vulnerable from folks who have been proven to be abusers," she explained. "You have to put your theological forgiveness on one side and the obligations of your institution on another side. You might forgive them but that doesn't mean that they get to go back to children's church next week. They shouldn't."

Gates agreed.

“The theology of forgiveness and restoration that people are trying to use in relationship to him is more of the hyper-grace version that basically everything that he’s done and will ever do God already knew about, He’s already died for, it’s already under the blood, so just forget about it and move on. But what those people aren’t considering is …. Where is the outcry for the victims?” he asked.

“I know nobody knows who the victims are yet. If I was a victim I wouldn’t want to be known either,” he said, noting that they would get attacked in the media and would not have any support from ministry leaders.

“I would say if the things in the report are proven to be true in the entirety … then if it was my choice to make, if it was somebody that I was over, I would remove them from public ministry and I would recommend that they never go back into public ministry but again the problem is he’s not really under anybody.

“Nobody has the authority over him to make him step down or to never do ministry again. The only thing that would be able to happen is that people just speak out and basically leaders of churches not have him,” Gates said.

He also argued that one of the reasons it’s so difficult for Fresh Fire USA to remove Bentley from leadership is because the ministry is built around him.

“That’s a one-man show. Fresh Fire will be no more if that’s what happens,” he said, commenting on the possibility of Bentley stepping down.

“And that’s part of the problem in charismatic Christianity. We really need to get back to the roots of just being Christians and stop focusing on signs and wonders, anointings and mantles and all this charismatic lingo and start focusing on the principles of the Bible, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
