18-Foot-Long Deep-Sea Creature Found off California
10/15/13
http://news.yahoo.com/18-foot-long-deep-sea-creature-found-off-204825348.html

The staff and kids at a Southern California educational facility got quite a surprise when an 18-foot-long (5.5 meters) serpentlike sea creature washed up near the shore.

While swimming in about 20 feet (5 meters) of water, dive instructor Jasmine Santana saw a large, silvery, slender figure on the sandy bottom on Sunday (Oct. 13). It turned out to be a dead oarfish, a rare animal that is typically found in much deeper waters, said Jeff Chace, with the Catalina Island Marine Institute, which teaches kids about marine science.

Santana dragged the fish to shore, where the staff took photographs and then put it on ice to show to their students the next day. "The kids were stunned, excited, giggly," Chace told LiveScience's OurAmazingPlanet.

Oarfish are rarely found near the shore, and usually only arrive there once they are sick or dead, Chace said. This animal appeared to die of natural causes. Nobody at the institute had seen one before, he added.

The animals live in the deep ocean and are believed to grow up to nearly 50 feet (15 m) long, Chace said. This makes them the world's longest bony fish, a group that includes almost all fish except sharks and rays (whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean). The fish swim with their head upright and their tail hanging beneath them, and can easily move backward and forward and up and down quickly, observations of the fish have shown.

In August 2011, a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) captured a rare video of a live oarfish in the Gulf of Mexico. Oarfish are so-called because of appendages at the end of their pelvic spines that look like paddles, which are used to help them balance and swim upright.

Oarfish omen spells earthquake disaster for Japan

Japan is bracing itself after dozens of rare giant oarfish - traditionally the harbinger of a powerful earthquake - have been washed ashore or caught in fishermen's nets.

The appearance of the fish follows Saturday's destructive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile and the January 12 tremors in Haiti, which claimed an estimated 200,000 lives.

A quake with a magnitude of 6.4 has also struck southern Taiwan.

This rash of tectonic movements around the Pacific "Rim of Fire" is heightening concern that Japan - the most earthquake-prone country in the world - is next in line for a major earthquake.

Those concerns have been stoked by the unexplained appearance of a fish that is known traditionally as the Messenger from the Sea God's Palace.

The giant oarfish can grow up to five metres in length and is usually to be found at depths of 1,000 metres and very rarely above 200 metres from the surface. Long and slender with a dorsal fin the length of its body, the oarfish resembles a snake.

Or maybe Quayle linked the wrong story. Here's the story from yesterday you were talking about...

Second giant "sea serpent" oarfish found in California

For the second time in less than a week, a "sea serpent" has attracted gawkers on a Southern California beach.

This time the rare, snakelike oarfish washed up Friday afternoon in Oceanside.

The newspaper U-T San Diego reported that it measured nearly 14 feet long and attracted a crowd of up to 75 people.

Oceanside police contacted SeaWorld San Diego, The Scripps Research Institute and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Someone from NOAA retrieved the carcass, which was cut into sections for later study.

While it's unusual to find the deep-water fish near shore, on Sunday a snorkeler off Catalina Island found an 18-foot long oarfish and dragged it onto the beach with the help of a dozen other people.

According to the Catalina Island Marine Institute, oarfish can grow to more than 50 feet, making them the longest bony fish in the world.

They are likely responsible for sea serpent legends throughout history.

Video: 'Sea Serpents’ Or Harbingers? Oarfish Washed Up Year Before Japan Quake
10/21/13
http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2013/10/21/oarfish-or-harbingers-sea-serpents-washed-up-year-before-japan-quake/

CATALINA ISLAND (CBSLA.com) — Could the appearance of rare “sea serpents” washing ashore beaches in Southern California portend disaster?

The question comes following the discovery of the carcass of a rare 18-foot-long oarfish off the coast of Catalina Island on Oct. 13, followed by another snakelike 14-foot-long oarfish found on Oct. 18 in Oceanside.

Fishermen in Japan reported a sharp uptick in oarfish sightings in March 2010 following the massive magnitude-8.8 earthquake in Chile that same month, which marked almost exactly one year before the country was devastated by its own magnitude-8.9 quake in northeast Japan.

Oarfish, which can grow to more than 50 feet in length, are considered the longest bony fish in the world. They typically dive more than 3,000 feet deep, which makes sightings rare and has fueled various serpent legends throughout history.

According to traditional Japanese lore, oarfish rise to the water’s surface and beach themselves to warn of an impending earthquake, a notion that some scientists have speculated could be supported by the bottom-dwelling fish being more sensitive to seismic shifts.

Known as the “Messenger from the Sea God’s Palace,” over a dozen “ryugu no tsukai,” or slender oarfish, either washed ashore or were caught in fishing nets in the Ishikawa, Toyama, Kyoto, Shimane and Nagasaki prefectures near the quake’s epicenter months before the 2011 quake hit, according to several reports.

Scientists, however, say there is no data to support an actual link between the two phenomena.

“It’s probably just a coincidence,” said Rick Feeney, who has been studying fish for almost 35 years for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

According to Feeney, four sightings have been reported since 2010 from the Central Coast southward, including in Malibu in 2010 and Lompoc in 2011.

“We think that they come inshore to die actually because they’re in distress for some reason, but we don’t know what the reason is,” said Feeney, adding that the fish could have been starving or disoriented.

But the fish remain somewhat of a mystery to researchers because there have been few Oarfish caught over the years, he said.

A record number of sea lion sightings were reported along Southland beaches earlier this year, including one declared “unusual mortality event” in April that saw hundreds of ailing sea lion pups washed ashore.

Which in turn could cause a sporadic release of toxic gasses from the sea floor.

And then there is Fukushima. Pretty much everything that comes out of the Pacific needs to be tested for radiation.

Giant oarfish appears off Taiwan just two hours after earthquake – Fear of the Big One?

A giant oarfish was caught off Taiwan on April 19, 2016 just after a moderately-strong quake hit.

The so-called “earthquake fish”, measuring an amazing 16ft (5m) long, is freaking locals out as, according to folklore, it is said to appear just before a quake hits.

The sea beast, was captured in waters off Taiwan’s eastern Kangle Village, in Hualien County.

The bizarre creature appeared after the southern city of Tainan experienced a quake of 4.6 in magnitude in the early hours of April 19.

Normally living in deep ocean waters, local residents suspected the deep-sea creature had been sent to surface by this quake.

It comes just weeks after a devastating 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Tainan City claiming the lives of 117 people and leaving 550 hurt.

Although oarfish are traditionally a bad omen it was a lucky haul for the fisherman after he chopped up the trophy catch and turned it into soup.

Have a good meal while waiting for the next quake to strike!

Two oarfish appear after mud volcano eruption and earthquake swarm off Taiwan

Two rare oarfish, also known as earthquake fish, were thrown out of the water after a mud volcano erupted off Taiwan on April 28, 2016.

The volcano erupted in the city of Pingtung following a 5.6-magnitude earthquake.

wo deep sea oarfish measuring 4.4 metres each were caught by fishermen off Taiwan.

The earthquake fish appeared at the surface of the ocean after a mud volcano started erupting following a M5.6 earthquake in the waters off Hualien County.

According to residents of Wandan Town, the mud volcano has four eruption mouths from which a hot slurry is ejected on the nearby fields.

Local villagers dug ditches to drain the slurry away.

They doubt that the eruption may have a connection with the earthquake swarm that hit the eastern coast of Taiwan during the night of April 27-28.

Officials say the mud volcano eruption may last for two to three days. And it may be accompanied by some magnitude 5 earthquakes.

Signs come true: Oarfish washes ashore in Philippines 3 days before series of earthquakes hits Luzon

Another sign comes true!

On April 4, 2017. a giant oarfish – 14.4-feet long – washed ashore in Southern Leyte, Philippines 4 days before a series of strong earthquakes hit Luzon.

An oarfish washed ashore in Southern Leyte Tuesday evening (April 4, 2017), sparking fears of an impending earthquake. On April 8, 2017, a series of three strong quakes – M59, M5.5, M5.0 – hit near Manila, Philippines. Is that another sign that oarfish can feel and sense imminent earthquakes?

The last deep-sea oarfish was found along the shore of Talisay, Libagon, Southern Leyte. The
female, estimated to be 14.4-feet long and 1.2-feet wide, was seen alive, but weak and most probably died moments later.

This is the third oarfish sighted in Leyte this year. And for numbers of residents, the oarfish sighting is believed to be a premonition for an earthquake, as they usually live in the deep and cold waters of the ocean.

Some experts believe that deep-sea fish are capable of sensing tremors on the Earth’s crust.
According to Kiyoshi Wadatsumi, in a statement published by Japan Times, such aquatic creatures are more sensitive to the movements of faults.

Now 4 days after, this series of earthquakes occurred. Is this oarfish sighting related to the swarm of strong quakes?

Two dead oarfish found in the Philippines one day before M6.3 earthquake hits Batangas on August 11, 2017

Two dead oarfish washed up at a nature reserve in the Philippines on August 10th.
This is just a few hours before a strong M6.3 earthquake struck the northern island of Luzon, today, August 11th. So are these giant king of herring a sign of impending earthquakes?

Two Messenger From the Sea God’s Palace’ – 3.7 metres (20kg) and 4.4 metres (50kg) – were found dead in the coastal region of Saint Bernard in Southern Leyte. One of them was full of eggs, ready to lay down.

After today’s M6.3 earthquake in the Philippines it is normal I would say to study the link between the dead sea creatures and seismic activity.

Oarfish are deep-ocean giants living 1,000 meters deep and rarely coming in surface waters. So it is clearly RARE to see two at once!

Some will say that the distance between the oarfish and the epicenter of the quake is too large – around 1,300 km apart. But multiple cases exist in which the two phenomena occurred together.

20 oarfish washed ashore in the days leading up the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Dozens were discovered by Japanese fishermen around the time a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile in March 2010.

Although there is no direct scientific evidence suggesting that oarfish feel seismic activity, these animals live in close proximity to underwater fault lines.

When an earthquake occurs there can be a build-up of pressure in the rocks which can lead to electrostatic charges that cause electrically-charged ions to be released into the water. This can lead to the formation of hydrogen peroxide, which is a toxic compound. The charged ions can also oxidise organic matter which could either kill the fish or force them to leave the deep ocean and rise to the surface.

There is clearly a link between oarfish and earthquakes.

Giant 18 feet oarfish found dead in Peru 24 hours before the dangerous M7.2 earthquake hit Mexico

A giant oarfish washed ashore on the beach of Los Yuyales in Peru around 1:30pm on February 15, 2018, so just 24 hours before a very powerful earthquake of 7.2-magnitude hit Mexico on February 16, 2018. Finding a giant oarfish washed up on the beach is a rare occurrence, since the fish is a deepwater species that’s rarely seen at all. Now, some are claiming that oarfish washing ashore is a sign that an earthquake will soon follow. Coincidence or not?

The villagers were afraid to approach the 5,50 meters (18 feet) deep seas creature as an animal of this type had never been seen before.

Now, some are claiming that oarfish washing ashore is a sign that an earthquake will soon follow. Shortly before the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, about 20 oarfish stranded themselves on beaches in the area.

The oarfish is known in Japan as ryugu no tsukai or “messenger from the sea god’s palace.”. Dozens of the deep-sea denizens were discovered by Japanese fishermen around the time a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile in March 2010.

Kiyoshi Wadatsumi, a specialist in ecological seismology explains deep-sea fish living near the sea bottom are more sensitive to the movements of active faults than those near the surface of the sea.

Two days ago, fishermen fear the apocalypse after extremely rare 15ft-long, deep-sea megamouth shark washed up on their beach in the Philippines.

And then 24 hours the M7.2 earthquake hit Mexico:

Giant 13-Foot Oarfish Found in Baja’s Pichilingue Bay in Mexico

This huge 13-foot sea monster was found in Baja’s Pichilingue Bay in La Paz, Mexico.
And since, the DRAGON fish has gone viral because it is told to predict earthquake…

Prior to Japan’s catastrophic 2011 earthquake, there was an ‘unusual number of’ slender oarfish which appeared off Japan from December 2009 to March 2010 and many of these fish washed up on the beaches.

This fueled the myth that these are ‘earthquake fish’ that show up before large earthquakes. There’s no scientific evidence that these Giant Oarfish have any connection to earthquakes but that hasn’t stopped the myth from carrying on.

Giant oarfish washes up just before two earthquakes in Taiwan

On Nov. 6th, fishermen caught a huge, 5-meter-long (16.4 feet) oarfish off the coast of Dong’ao in Yilan County, eastern Taiwan.

More importantly, the deep sea fish was found just before two earthquakes struck the area. What a coincidence isn’t it?

The two following earthquakes:

M5.4 at 2:36 a.m. on Nov. 6th, 30.3 kilometers southeast of Taitung County Hall.

    M5.4 at 9:40 a.m., on Nov. 6th, 107.8 kilometers east-northeast of Taitung County Hall.
