US Scholars Back Isolation Of Israel

An association of American professors with almost 5,000 members has voted to endorse an academic boycott of Israeli colleges and universities, the group announced Monday, making it the largest academic group in the United States to back a growing movement to isolate Israel over its treatment of Palestinians. The group, the American Studies Association, said its members approved the boycott resolution by 2-to-1 in online balloting that concluded Sunday night, with about a quarter of the members voting. "The resolution is in solidarity with scholars and students deprived of their academic freedom and it aspires to enlarge that freedom for all, including Palestinians," the American Studies Association said. The national council of the American Studies Association voted unanimously on Dec. 4 in favor of the boycott resolution and then put the issue to its members. The group's stance has pitted scholars and organizations against one another in a heated debate about the ethics of academic boycotts, the motives behind the campaign and whether Israel is being singled out unfairly.

Dare I give anybody any ideas, but that logic follows that if Israel is to be punished, then shouldn't the US be punished for their treatment of Latino immigrants? Same deal actually. Latinos were here, at least in the southwestern third of the US, before the white man and the US became a country. The US moved in on them, just like the world is claiming Israel took Palestinian lands.

Just what equates to a liberal scholar...  Cheesy

The problem is acute. Of the 18 members of the ASA National Council who voted unanimously to endorse the boycott resolution, none appears to have any connection with Middle East studies. At least seven appear to have gender studies and sexual politics as a major, or one of their major, interests. The others state their primary research interests are race, film, “imperialism,” and Hawaiian and Latino cultural studies.

WAPO Editorial Bashes American Studies Association Israel Boycott

The most difficult thing to swallow about the resolution is how utterly narrow-minded it seems.

In an editorial published Sunday evening, The Washington Post blasted the American Studies Association (ASA) for what it called a "misguided" and "narrow-minded" boycott of Israel.

Last week the ASA decided on an academic boycott of the Jewish State of Israel. Israel was chosen despite the fact that it is the only democratic nation in the Middle East. When it was pointed out that many of her neighbors have human rights records much worse than Israel, the ASA's National Council President, Curtis Maraz, said, “One has to start somewhere.” In its Sunday evening editorial The Washington Post criticized the ASA for not starting at some of those other places:
 “

The most difficult thing to swallow about the resolution is how utterly narrow-minded it seems. Was the resolution written on a computer manufactured in China, one of the most repressive regimes on the planet? Did its authors pause to consider China’s incarceration of writers and scholars who dare to think and speak out for freedom, or the ethnic groups in China persecuted for refusing to heel to the Beijing masters? Did they give any thought to what’s happened lately to freedom in Russia, won at enormous cost in a Cold War that lasted more than four decades? Does it disturb the scholars that in today’s Russia, members of a girl band performing a protest against the Kremlin could be thrown into a cold and miserable prison for two years, or that civil society organizations are being systematically shuttered?

Have the scholars overlooked the cries for help from Cuban dissidents bravely standing up to the Castro brothers, demanding freedoms — and suffering beatings and arrest almost every week? Do they condone the decision of a judge in Saudi Arabia who has just sentenced a political activist to 300 lashes and four years in prison for calling for a constitutional monarchy?

To focus a resolution on Israel and ignore these injustices is puzzling at best. It is also fundamentally wrong. For all of its difficulties, including the wrenching, long conflict with the Palestinians, Israel has become a lively and durable democracy. There is more freedom to speak one’s mind and criticize the government in front of the Knesset than will be found in either Tiananmen Square or Red Square today — and far more in Israeli universities than in academia elsewhere in the Middle East.

University of Alabama Demands to be Removed from American Studies Association Membership List

Hasn’t been a member in over three years, ASA still lists it erroneously

The American Studies Association announced a boycott against Israel several weeks ago, when a majority of its members voted in favor of the controversial effort.

Truth Revolt contacted the Secretary for the University of Alabama system to find out if its universities agreed with the boycott. After checking with various departments, Secretary Michael Bowles reported that not only was the University of Alabama listed erroneously in the directory, but that in light of the ASA’s boycott, the University’s American Studies department chair was contacting the ASA and demanding to stop being listed.

The University of Alabama hasn't paid a membership to ASA in over three years, Bowles said. He also commented that the University has made major efforts to be a welcoming and desirable academic home for Jewish students, so if it has been an ASA member, it would have ended its affiliation in light of the boycott.

University of Michigan: BDSers Shout 'Kike', Threaten Violence
One pro-Israel student received death threats, others have been called 'dirty Jew'. But what is the university doing about it?

Death threats and anti-Semitic epithets were reportedly issued by pro-Palestinian activists at the University of Michigan against students who oppose a resolution to divest from Israel.

The Washington Free Beacon reported that University of Michigan police were first contacted last week after two anti-Israel activists shouted “threats of violence” at a student who refused to support the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, during a “sit-in” at the student government’s headquarters.

The Beacon has further learned that the pro-Israel student received death threats and that others have allegedly been called “kikes” and “dirty Jews” by backers of BDS, which aims to delegitimize and weaken the Jewish state through economic means.

“The atmosphere of intimidation and violence could leave the University of Michigan vulnerable to legal action and political retribution on a national scale, according to multiple sources in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere who are monitoring the situation,” wrote the news site.

Kenneth Marcus, a former staff director at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, told the publication that he has contacted high-level university officials to discuss the situation but that these calls have yet to be returned.

“This is a very disturbing incident and if the students’ allegations are true, this is an environment that is hostile to Jewish students and the university has a legal responsibility to take prompt and effective action,” said Marcus, who serves as president and general counsel of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law.

University officials have not yet issued a response, despite numerous requests.

“Our biggest concern is these Jewish students might be vulnerable to a violent criminal attack, and we’re very concerned about whether the university is taking that seriously enough,” he said. “If the worst happens there is substantial liability for the university.”

“Even short of that, if the university allows a hostile environment to form without taking effective action, it could be liable for a civil lawsuit or federal investigation” by the Department of Education, Marcus said.

In December, University of Michigan was accused of taking inadequate action after pro-Palestinian activists posted 1,500 anti-Israel “eviction” notices on the doors of pro-Israel students and Jews.

Senior pro-Israel leaders in Washington, D.C. have been closely monitoring the situation and say they are gearing up to take action.

“The University of Michigan has allowed known pro-Hamas activists to openly organize riots on their campus and create an environment in which pro-Israel students had their lives threatened,” said a source whom the Beacon called a “high-level official with a prominent pro-Israel organization.”

“Now, after months of watching outside groups coordinate hateful stunts, university administrators are allowing students to be bullied into taking an anti-Israel vote with a gun pointed to their heads,” added the source. “They’ll have to answer for this, certainly politically and probably legally.”

Jewish NYU students targeted by pro-Palestine activists

Jewish students living in an NYU dorm woke up Thursday to find threatening “eviction” notices left by pro-Palestinian activists, officials said.

The notices – stealthily delivered in the dead of night by members of NYU’s Students for Justice in Palestine – warned students at the Palladium Hall residence  that their suites were scheduled for demolition.

This “eviction” notice was posted in an NYU dorm Thursday.Photo: Gabriella Bass

“If you do not vacate the premise by midnight on 25 April, 2014 we reserve the right to destroy all remaining belongings. We cannot be held responsible for property or persons remaining inside the premises,” the notices read, according to a blog in The Times of Israel by NYU student Laura Adkins, vice president of the school’s pro-Israel advocacy group, TorchPAC.

The “warnings” conclude “THIS IS NOT A REAL EVICTION NOTICE” in all capital letters, and the pro-Palestinian students said they were just replicas of notices routinely left at the homes of Palestinians by the Israeli government.

“NYU encourages free speech and the free exchange of ideas, but our hope is that the discourse – including debate on controversial issues – will be conducted in a fashion that is mature and that is meant to elicit thoughtful discussion rather than simply provoke,” NYU spokesman John Beckman said.

“A flyer titled  `eviction notice’ anonymously slipped under doors at night is not an invitation to thoughtful, open discussion. It is disappointingly inconsistent with standards we expect to prevail in a scholarly community.  Our Residence Life and Housing Office will be communicating with the students in the dorm, looking into the matter, and following up appropriately.”

School officials said they didn’t understand why Palladium residence were targeted.

“It is unclear why the flyering took place in this particular dorm. We don’t believe there is perception of this dorm as having an a high percentage of Jewish students,” Beckman said.

“However, were it to be the case that the flyering was done there because it was perceived be a dorm with a higher proportion of Jewish students, that would be troubling, dismaying  and a matter of deep concern for our community.”

A similar hate prank was pulled earlier this year at Northeastern  University in Boston, where a campus group – Students for Justice in Palestine – left mock eviction notices.

The group was suspended from campus on March 7, but has since been reinstate and on probation until January, according to The Jewish Daily Forward newspaper reported on Thursday.

NYU students  at the residence hall targeted were left shaken by the incident.

“Being very straightforward, this made me feel targeted and unsafe in my own dorm room and I know others feel exactly the same as myself. I understand free speech rights but if this was targeted solely to Jewish students then this appears to be of a more threatening nature rather than informative,” a sophomore said.

The notices said that “27,000 Palestinian homes have been destroyed since 1967” leaving “160,000 Palestinians have been left homeless as a result of these policies” by the Israeli government.

“This is intended to draw attention to the reality that Palestinians confront on a regular basis,” the notice read.

Palladium Hall at 140 East 14th St. houses about 960 residents and has a high concentration of jewish residents, wrote Adkins.

The blogger said the “radical” group has been accused of glorifying Palestinian terrorists, was founded at UC Berkeley in 2001 and has financial ties to Hamas, which the US government recognizes as a terrorist group.

“Academic dialogue and the freedom to share ideas is one thing, but this move by NYU’s SJP shows nothing but cowardice and anti-Semitic fearmongering. By choosing to target Jewish students, or at the very least, a dorm brimming with Jewish students, instead of engaging with them, NYU’s SJP has made it clear that they do not seek dialogue or peace with Israel,” she wrote in The Times.

“We must stand up against hatred and intolerance and make sure NYU remains a safe space for all students, inside and outside of the classroom.”

The pro-Palestinian student group could not immediately be reached for comment.

20 years ago, even these very groups would have faced harsh disciplinary action by the universities. Now? It's as if they're free to do anything they want.

Support For Israel Waning Among Evangelicals

In a recent article by Sarah Bailey in The Washington Post , David Brog, executive director of Christians United for Israel (CUFI) is quoted expressing concern that evangelicals have shifted within the last decade, and are no longer considered automatic supporters of Israel.

“The days of taking evangelical support for Israel for granted are over…they cannot let the evangelical community go the way of the mainstream Protestant leadership, Brog urged.

Several mainline churches and international church bodies have passed resolutions on divesting money or boycotting products made in Israel because of its "occupation" of the Palestinian territories.

David Gushee, Christian ethicist at Mercer University, said he sees more tourist trips to the region wanting to include a Palestinian perspective. “The Palestinian side of the story is coming into view in the way it hasn’t come before,” he said. “As people are organizing their mental worlds theologically, whatever they’re reading, it doesn’t equal unequivocal support for Israel at any given point.”

Jews for Jesus director David Brickner holds a similar view: “I long to see the church have a balanced perspective on the Middle East, where you don’t have to throw out the concern for Palestinians to support Israel. I really believe there’s a large middle ground, but it’s hard to do when people are in their polar positions.”

Examples given in the Washington Post report, of the downward trend in support for Israel by evangelicals include the following:

Ø   In an October 2010 poll of evangelical leaders attending the global evangelical conference in Cape Town, South Africa, 48 percent of the evangelicals said Israel is a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy about the Second Coming of Jesus, while 42 percent said it is not.

Ø   34 percent of global evangelicals surveyed sympathized with Israel, compared with 30 percent of American evangelicals.

Ø  New films made by Christians, such as “With God on Our Side” and “Little Town of Bethlehem” are beginning to question support for Israel.

Ø  “Christ at the Checkpoint” began in 2010 as a biennial conference with the idea that Jesus was a Palestinian who could be suffering under Israeli occupation today as he once suffered under Roman occupation.

Despite such instances, findings from the Pew Research Center suggest that evangelical support for Israel has remained relatively stable in the past five years. When asked:  “In the dispute between Israel and the Palestinians, who do you sympathize with more?” evangelicals were far more likely to say Israel — 72 percent to 4 percent in 2013, about the same as in 2009.

This apparent paradox of views from evangelicals suggests that evangelical support of Israel is still quite strong but is being steadily eroded due to news reports and perceptions alleging Israel’s abuse of Palestinian rights.

According to the Washington Post report, this indication of unwavering support for Israel is thought to have originated from a specific, literalistic approach to Biblical prophecy, called dispensationalism. Dispensationalists believe the Israelites’ return to the Promised Land is a requirement for the Second Coming of Jesus. They therefore rejoiced when Israeli troops captured the Old City of Jerusalem from Arab forces in June 1967 and saw it as a sign that Jesus was coming.

Another Biblical reason for the widespread support for Israel by evangelicals is however not covered in many analyses: that God, in the Old Testament, chose Israel as His own covenant people, promising to bless those who bless them and curse those who curse them(Genesis 12:1-3).

And as explained in weblessisrael.org:  “In the Book of Numbers, where the Bible is telling us about the Nation of Israel that God delivers out of bondage in Egypt, it tells us:"He crouched. He lay down as a lion, and as a great lion. Who shall stir him up? Blessed is he who blesses you, and cursed is he who curses you" (Numbers 24:9). Although many will point out that this Scripture had its fulfillment in the Old Testament days, it doesn't seem to have any time-related limitation on it. It doesn't say, "I will bless those who bless you only until the Messiah comes. . .", or have any other conditions that would limit the result of actions toward Israel”.

But why Israel? David Treybig for LifeHop and Truth explained: “God’s purpose in choosing Israel was for them to be a model nation to other nations and that through them “all the families of the earth” would be blessed (Genesis 12:3). He wanted Israel to be “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Exodus 19:6). Other nations would see that when the Israelites obeyed God, they were blessed (verse 5), and when they disobeyed God, they would be punished (Deuteronomy 28)”.

So there is clearly a sense in which evangelicals should support Israel – simply because God initiated that support and commands it – promising to bless those who bless Israel and curse those who curse them. His choice of Israel is on the basis of His love, promises to their forefathers and covenant relationship with Israel (Deuteronomy 7:6-8), not due to their number or righteousness. Therefore, those who choose not to support Israel based on Israel’s perceived weaknesses or misdeeds are overlooking this point and taking a different position than God commanded for those who wish to remain blessed.

God’s prerogative in His dealings with Israel, both collectively and individually should not be usurped by any man’s judgment or opinion, as any wicked actions taken by Israel and Israelis will be judged by God Himself. As written in Ezekiel 18:30:  Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

Just Wait Until You Hear What UCLA Student Government Candidates Are Being Asked to Sign

Candidates running to serve as officers in the undergraduate student government at UCLA are being asked to sign a pledge that they will not go on certain free or sponsored trip to Israel, a prerequisite that one pro-Israel group is calling “bigoted” and “absurd.” According to the UCLA newspaper the Daily Bruin, the majority of candidates have signed the pledge.

The Joint Statement on Undergraduate Students Association Council Ethics to which the candidates have signed was drafted by the pro-Palestinian groups Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace, and the Armenian Students’ Association, the Bruin reported on Tuesday.

The Muslim Students Association has also expressed support for the initiative.

The Students’ Association Ethics statement would require council members to refrain from going on trips paid for or partially-sponsored by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Anti-Defamation League and Hasbara Fellowships, all groups with a pro-Israel stance, the Bruin reported.

The ethics statement does not appear to prohibit the student government officers from traveling to Israel with Palestinian, church or mosque groups.

Cornell University law professor William Jacobson who runs the Legal Insurrection blog called the UCLA development a “move to disqualify a generation of pro-Israel students from campus government” and “another move to stack the deck in favor of BDS.” BDS refers to the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign which targets Israel.

“These trips and advocacy training are critical because some campuses have become openly hostile to pro-Israel students as a result of ‘direct action’ and other intimidation by relatively small but highly coordinated anti-Israel groups like Students for Justice in Palestine,” Jacobson wrote. “Professors actively participate in demonizing pro-Israel students.”

Roz Rothstein who heads the pro-Israel group StandWithUs said in a statement Friday, “BDS activists are trying to intimidate student leaders and prevent them from learning about Israel. This is bigoted — because only Israel is being targeted. It is absurd because student senators are not expected to vote on foreign policy issues.”

“It is also hypocritical because if applied fairly, candidates would also be forced to completely disassociate themselves from the BDS Movement. They would not be allowed to attend divestment training sessions, SJP [Students for Justice in Palestine] conferences, or pro-BDS events in general, because BDS promotes hatred and marginalizes so many students on campus,” Rothstein added.

Jonathan Tobin of Commentary Magazine wrote that the UCLA initiative was most likely prompted by the defeat in February of a student government motion to divest from Israel.

He wrote that “some students—especially Jews—have been to Israel on trips where they learn the other side of the story from the pro-Palestinian propaganda that is often shoved down their throats in classes or at college forums.” The trips empower the students to then convey the equal rights that they witnessed in Israel, rather than “accept the lies about Israel being an ‘apartheid’ state,” Tobin wrote.

“That’s a problem for the BDS (boycott, divest, sanction) crowd, but they’ve come up with an effective answer to it: start a campaign seeking to stigmatize those who take trips to Israel sponsored by Jewish organizations,” Tobin wrote.

“Shaming those who have been on trips to Israel or take the opportunity to learn more about the Middle East first hand is, above all, a direct attack on Jewish students,” Tobin added.

The UCLA undergraduate student government in February defeated a resolution proposed by Students for Justice in Palestine calling for UCLA and the University of California to divest from five Israeli companies whose products are allegedly used by the Israel Defense Forces.

Student candidate Avinoam Baral who did not sign the statement told the Bruin that he believes student council members should be free to associate with different organizations in order to educate themselves on a variety of issues. He told the university paper that he traveled to Israel on a Hasbara Fellowship – one of the groups targeted by the pledge – as an educational experience. He does not believe it to be a conflict of interest because he received no financial benefits in exchange for his vote on the divestment resolution.

NYU SJP Hosts Anti-Semitic Rally

The New York University chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, the same group that slid anti-Semitic "mock eviction notices" to two dorms earlier this year, held an anti-Semitic rally on Thursday afternoon. The group's "Nakba Day Die-In" featured leftist pro-terror chants such as "resistance is justified when a people are occupied" and "Zionist state, tear it down."

TruthRevolt captured video of the rally:

NYU's SJP also chanted "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" which calls for the end of Israel. SJP relies on half-truths and manipulations to indoctrinate college students into hating Israel and spreading Jew-hatred. Among the most outrageous claims made by SJP is that Israel ethnically cleanses Palestinians and attempts to maintain a state that is exclusively Jewish.

Students for Justice in Palestine chapters across the country are known for bullying and targeting Jewish students. According to Ilya Feoktistov of Americans for Peace and Tolerance, the group at Northeastern University interrupted a Holocaust awareness event:

NU SJP emerged as a belligerent presence at Northeastern when its members crashed a Holocaust Awareness Week event in 2011 by whipping out anti-Israel signs and yelling insults at the audience and speakers before storming out.

By 2012, NU SJP faculty advisor M. Shahid Alam was bragging to SJP members at one of the group’s meetings that anti-Israel activism on campus has made pro-Israel students afraid to speak out in support of the Jewish State. He can be seen suggesting to NU SJP members that they should be proud to be called anti-Semites and that they should wear this label as a badge of honor.

During the 2012 Israel Apartheid Week, members of Students for Justice in Palestine vandalized the campus with anti-Semitic messages, specifically targeting and defacing the statue of a Jewish donor and trustee of the university.

The SJP Chapter at Tufts promotes the idea of "equality through resistance" which implicitly condones terrorism, suicide bombing and rock-throwing at innocent Israeli civilians.

Presbyterian Pastors Regret Divestment from Companies Doing Business in Israel

Two Presbyterian pastors have voiced their opinions regretting the denomination’s recent decision to divest from companies that did business in Israel. Rev. Ed Hurley and Rev. Conrad Sharps, both of Birmingham, wrote a letter condemning the decision and offering a prayer of peace for Israel.

The Presbyterian Church’s General Assembly voted to divest from Hewlett Packard, Caterpillar and Motorola, but the pastors believe that the decision did not reflect the wishes of the majority of the denomination.

“In our opinion, the action of the General Assembly in promoting divestment from companies doing business with Israel is counterproductive. It lays the blame on the stalemate on one side only, Israel, without a fuller and more meaningful appreciation of the complexities involved and the responsibilities that all parties have in the ongoing nature of this conflict. The divestment removes our voice, the voice of our Church as an unbiased mediator and spiritual witness to the suffering on all sides of the conflict. And it causes great pain and a potential rupture with our Jewish friends locally, with whom we share so much. A far better approach, one already yielding positive results, has been the investment of Presbyterian Church USA dollars in peaceful Palestinian businesses,” the letter read in part.

The pastors concluded with a list of actions that Christians should take to support Israel and Palestine. According to Hurley and Sharps, Christians should pray for peace in the region and for the safety of its residents. Additionally, Christians should condemn violence and “promote good will.”

The letter can be read in its entirety at www.al.com.

Thousands take to NY streets to protest Israeli offensive in Gaza

Thousands of people took to the streets of New York City on Friday evening to protest Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip and demand an end to the violence that has reportedly killed nearly 850 Palestinians.

Police scrambled to corral the demonstrators, which officers estimated numbered between 2,000 and 3,000, as they flooded into the busy streets around Times Square.

Waving Palestinian flags and signs condemning Israel for the offensive, many called for an end to US aid to the country.

"We're trying to break the siege and end the killing in Palestine. We just want them to live like human beings," said Ramsey Jamal, 37, a Palestinian-American from Montgomery, New York.

On his shoulders sat his 8-year-old son, Moses, who carried a placard reading: "Israel I'm just a kid. Please don't kill me," alongside marks resembling a child's bloody handprints.

Israel began its offensive earlier this month, following a surge in rocket attacks launched from Hamas terrorists in Gaza.

The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip on Friday reportedly climbed to 844.

Thirty-seven Israeli soldiers and three civilians have also died.

On Friday, both sides agreed to a 12-hour humanitarian ceasefire set to begin on Saturday morning.

In New York City, the crowd marched through the bustling evening streets of Midtown Manhattan chanting "Free, free Palestine!" and "1,2,3,4, stop the killing, stop the war!"

It was unclear who organized the protest, which drew demonstrators to the city from miles away.

Stars Face Hollywood Backlash in War of Words Over Israel

When the latest battle in Gaza finally is over, as someday it will be, hard feelings could linger in the corner offices of Hollywood toward the stars who have voiced anti-Israel sentiments. But will the artists who criticize Israel military strikes -- particularly married Spaniards Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, who accused the country of "genocide" in a widely circulated July 25 letter -- suffer career backlash in a town whose power brokers tend to be strong supporters of Israel?

So far, Relativity Media CEO Ryan Kavanaugh is the only studio head willing to go public with his disgust. "As the grandson of Holocaust survivors, I know that anyone calling what's going on in Israel 'genocide' vs. self-defense is either ignorant and shouldn't be commenting or is truly anti-Semitic," Kavanaugh told THR on Aug. 2, saying the Spanish letter, signed by 100 film luminaries including Pedro Almodovar, "makes my blood boil." Kavanaugh says he received more than 500 calls, emails and texts of support in the 24 hours after his comments were published, including from high-ranking industry executives, suggesting the sentiment is widespread.

Indeed, though they decline to go on record, many top execs contacted by THR privately express similar feelings -- one says he's "furious at Javier and Penelope" -- and questioned whether they would want to work with the couple again. The stars' letter laid the blame for the conflict on Israel, which it said "keeps advancing on Palestinian territories instead of withdrawing to the 1967 borders." The actors' follow-up attempts to clarify their open letter and express support for the Jewish people were met with "a collective eye roll," according to one top exec. Some, like Kavanaugh, are taking the Israel statements personally. With the reports of Hamas' sophisticated tunnel network and its 3,000 missile attacks against Israeli citizens in 2014, many are convinced that the current crisis underscores a threat to the Jewish state itself. (Kelly Bush, a rep for Bardem, and Amanda Silverman, who reps Cruz, declined comment.)

Among Hollywood figures, the typically outspoken Howard Stern, Joan Rivers and Bill Maher have expressed support for Israel in the conflict, which has killed more than 1,800 people, mostly Palestinians. And Ray Donovan actor Jon Voight penned an open letter Aug. 2 demanding that Cruz, 40, and Bardem, 45, "hang your heads in shame." Wrote Voight: "I am asking all my peers who signed that poison letter against Israel to examine their motives. Can you take back the fire of anti-Semitism that is raging all over the world now?"

But for the most part, Hollywood's power brokers -- including those who have raised money for pro-Israel causes, such as Barbra Streisand, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg -- have avoided public comments on the conflict. Nor has there been criticism of other industry figures, including Jon Stewart, director Jonathan Demme and Mark Ruffalo, who have voiced nuanced concerns about Israel's military action in Gaza while supporting the nation in general. "I don't know why more prominent Hollywood people don't speak out about what's going on there," Stern said on his radio show July 28. "They're all afraid." Hollywood political donor Haim Saban, one of the industry's biggest Israel supporters, echoed those sentiments. "I don't understand this myself," Saban told the Jewish Journal on Aug. 1. "But starting today, I will be working the phones to enlist the vocal support of people who I know have an interest in supporting our staunchest ally in the region -- which also happens to be the only democracy in the region."

Despite his strongly worded letter, Voight says he doesn't think Cruz and Bardem -- who are currently in South Africa as Bardem shoots Sean Penn's The Last Face -- should suffer career fallout. "Don't try to create a blacklist," says Voight. "That doesn't help you." And one industry executive says he doesn't believe the Israel comments reach the "Mel Gibson threshold." When the actor was caught making virulent anti-Semitic remarks in 2010, he was marginalized and eventually dropped by agency WME (which reps Bardem, ironically) and faced widespread backlash.

In fact, many throughout Hollywood believe the careers of celebrities -- those such as Rihanna, who tweeted "#FreePalestine," or Piers Morgan, who tweeted "A WAR CRIME" in reaction to a news report of Palestinian children killed in an air strike -- are unlikely to be impacted solely by political views that many executives oppose. During her best supporting actress acceptance speech at the 1977 Oscars, Vanessa Redgrave called out "a small bunch of Zionist hoodlums whose behavior is an insult to the stature of Jews all over the world" and was booed. Nonetheless, Redgrave continued to work in major studio films.

One top producer who has worked with Cruz says he privately has vowed not to hire her again. Still, even Kavanaugh doesn't foresee the letter hurting either of their careers as long as the audience for their work doesn't turn. Or, as another producer points out: "I think the thing any executive or producer will try to calculate before working with Penelope Cruz or Javier Bardem in the near future is what their value is in the all-important international marketplace. And what territories they might have alienated people in by what they said. It might not be that many. But it's really all about business."

No - it's about 90% money and 10% talent in Hellywood - IOW, as long as their movies bring in alot of profits, they won't care what they do in their personal lives.

And besides - it's not like Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz even had "careers" there much to begin with.

Lawsuit over Rampant Anti-Semitism in NY School To Proceed
Lawsuit filed by Jewish families in New York claims blatant anti-Semitic harassment and staff indifference at high school.

A lawsuit filed by several Jewish families in New York against the Pine Bush Central School District in White Plains can proceed, a federal court ruled.

The lawsuit claims that the students’ rights were violated by “rampant anti-Semitic discrimination and harassment” and “deliberate indifference” by school officials, according to The New York Times. The families are seeking an unspecified amount in monetary damages.

In recent years, Jewish students attending schools in the Pine Bush district have complained of various anti-Semitic incidents, including anti-Semitic slurs and nicknames, drawings of swastikas, jokes about the Holocaust, physical violence, and fellow students forcing them to retrieve coins from the ground and/or dumpsters.

Jewish students also accused fellow students of making Nazi salutes, telling anti-Semitic jokes, and shouting out "white power" chants.

Judge Kenneth Karas of the U.S. District Court in White Plains, NY, on Tuesday denied the school district's motion to dismiss three of the five children named in the 2012 lawsuit, which also implicated school administrators as not doing enough to combat harassment.

Karas wrote in his opinion that a jury could reasonably find that the children had “suffered severe and discriminatory harassment, that the district had actual knowledge of the harassment, and that the district was deliberately indifferent to the harassment,” The New York Times reported.

The district’s superintendent, Joan Carbone, responded to the judge's decision to allow the trial to proceed in the following statement.

“We are obviously disappointed by this ruling but we will have the opportunity at trial to demonstrate that the District and individual administrators were not indifferent to allegations of anti-Semitism,” she wrote.

The school district maintains it took appropriate disciplinary actions against anti-Semitic activity occurring at the school - and that the phenomenon is not widespread in the district.

However, some school officials have admitted in court depositions that there is a serious problem.

Part of the reason for the lawsuit, the families say, is that essential changes be made to the culture of anti-Semitism in the district - that is, to eliminate it entirely.

Anti-Semitic horrors don‘t exist in Obama’s world

At Tuesday’s press briefing, White House mouthpiece Josh Earnest said something disgusting — I don’t know how else to describe it — about the massacre at the Hyper Casher kosher supermarket in Paris one month ago. “The individuals who were killed in that terrible, tragic incident,” Earnest droned, “were killed not because of who they were but because of where they randomly happened to be.”

Top U.K. University Blacklists Israeli Academic Institutions

Last week, in yet another familiarly tiresome portrayal of anti-Semitism parading itself as Palestinian “solidarity,” students and staff at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) voted to initiate a boycott against all Israeli academic institutions. The vote at one of the United Kingdom’s top universities was conducted over the course of a week, and after the announcement late Friday afternoon, partying broke out on the central London campus—along with a request for university authorities to cut their ties to Jerusalem’s Hebrew University.

Unsurprisingly, the vote was part of Israeli Apartheid Week, an event taking place from Feb. 23-28 on campuses all over the UK. According to its organizers, this effort will be reprised in the United States, Europe, Palestine, South Africa Ireland, Canada and South America in order to “raise awareness about Israel’s apartheid policies towards the Palestinians and to build support for the growing Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign.”

Voters included students, academics and any non-teaching staff, such as campus cleaning and security workers, who wished to participate. Results in all three groups were lopsided in favor of the boycott. Among students it was 1283 in favor, 425 against, for a 75 percent margin. Among the 300 academics who voted, the measure passed 60 percent to 40 percent. And the university’s 40 support staffers who voted overwhelmingly supported the measure by a margin of 91 percent. When all three groups are combined, 73 percent supported the measure, and 27 percent did not.

The figures are somewhat misleading because a substantial majority of SOAS students did not participate in the vote at all, including 74 percent of on-campus students, a number that rises to 86 percent if the students studying abroad are included. SOAS’s total student population is greater than 8,500 students and there are more than 330 members of the teaching staff.

The measure asked voters whether they think SOAS should join the BDS campaign, as well as implement guidelines created by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI). Those guidelines outline an “overriding rule” whereby, “all Israeli academic institutions, unless proven otherwise, are subject to boycott because of their decades-old, deep and conscious complicity in maintaining the Israeli occupation and denial of basic Palestinian rights, whether through their silence, actual involvement in justifying, whitewashing or otherwise deliberately diverting attention from Israel’s violations of international law and human rights, or indeed through their direct collaboration with state agencies in the planning and implementation of projects that contravene international law and Palestinian rights.”

The guide further describes a dozen different categories of events, activities, or situations in which one’s participation would constitute a “violation” of that boycott.  They include academic events, research and development activities, lobby groups receiving funding from Israel, addresses and other talks by Israeli officials or Israeli representatives of academic institutions, study abroad schemes in Israel, Israeli recognition events, Normalization Projects, etc.

Student Union members and faculty were joined by a host of groups that included the Justice For Cleaners, who are members of the SOAS cleaning staff, the LGBTQIA+ Society, the Kashmir Solidarity Movement and the Tamil Society.

The Open Democracy website insists the vote is emblematic of the academic freedom necessary to penetrate the “smokescreen behind which settler-colonialism is fed both discourse and weaponry.” Israeli universities, “inseparable from the Israeli state,” are taken to task for their “knowledge-production apparatuses that are necessary for the violent development of its colonial army and accompanying imperial expansion of the state.” Hebrew University is singled out for its participation in last summer’s war during which “the Israeli colonial machine murdered over 2,000 Palestinians in Gaza.”

Last October, the Student Union voted to “escalate their support,” of such an agenda, precipitating the non-binding “referendum” that ensued. The Union’s position on the referendum was clarified in January when it insisted “the Union was the instigator of the campaign through that initial UGM (University General Meeting) motion that both reaffirmed support to BDS whist [sic] also calling for the referendum.” There was token resistance against it, but that resistance amounted to between 5 and 10 students. One of them, 21-year-old Moselle Paz, president of the university’s Jewish Society, told Haaretz she expected to lose the vote, but insisted their presence was import an nonetheless. “If we hadn’t made a stand, this whole thing would have gone through without the other side being represented,” she explained.

Paz characterized the vote as “divisive” and “discriminatory,” further warning it would lead to a deterioration of relations between Israeli and Jewish students and other campus groups. She said they will voice their concerns to SOAS Director Paul Webley. “He has a duty of care to foster good relations between different religious and ethnic groups—this referendum does the opposite,” she insisted.

Paz also insisted Apartheid Week engendered a feeling of isolation among Jewish students. “We are too scared to go anywhere so we walk in a group to the station,” she revealed. “People come up to me and say I heard you hate Palestinians.”

Far more telling assessments were offered by other students who told Haaretz the wise course of action was not to speak out for Israel or against BDS, lest they be shunned by their peers. “People would stop talking to me,” said one post-graduate student who wished to remain anonymous. Economics student Avrahum Sanger, 21, said pro-Israeli students did not want to set up a stall in a common room at the university because “it’s too hostile.”

The SOAS Student Union had a different take, with a post-vote press release maintaining the referendum “was conducted in an open, fair and transparent environment” and that “both the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ campaigners were given equal platforms to hold panel discussions and debates.”

SOAS’s Head of Communications Katie Price called the vote more of an opinion poll because there is no mechanism currently in place at the university for a formal referendum. She labeled the union’s stance “problematic,” and noted SOAS has “constantly brought this up as an issue to the union.” But she admitted the university can only respond to formal complaints of bullying and/or intimidation. Paz and Sanger have complained to the union, but they haven’t met with school officials. They plan to do so next week.

Prior to the vote, the Student Union insisted it does all it can to maintain neutrality. However a statement posted on their website in January “clarifies” their genuine position. “In the last days we have received some constructive criticism from members of the SOAS community that have rightly believed that the Union has a bias when it comes to the referendum,” it states. “This is correct. Any claim of ‘neutrality’ would now be not only against union policy, but dishonest and false, since the Union was the instigator of the campaign through that initial UGM (Union General Meeting) motion that both reaffirmed support to BDS whist (sic) also calling for the referendum.”

According to 63-year-old student Richard Galber, even SOAS’s Israel Society was pro-boycott. He claims he was thrown out of a meeting for speaking out against the effort to impose sanctions on Israel. “I have never felt so un-belonging as at that meeting,” he said. “It was a very unpleasant sensation. I assumed an Israel Society would be welcoming to Israelis.”
UK is at a “tipping point” in a nation where 1 in 4 believe “Jews chase money more than other British people,

The relentlessness of these ongoing anti-Israel campaigns is having its intended effect. Britain experienced a record number of anti-Semitic incidents in 2014, double the number that occurred in 2013, according to the Community Security Trust, which provides security advice to Britain’s Jews. And while they blamed the majority of those incidents on last summer’s fighting in Gaza, they note incidents had been on the rise regardless.

The Annual Antisemitism Barometer, a report published in January by the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism (CAA), paints an even starker picture, insisting the UK is at a “tipping point” in a nation where 1 in 4 believe “Jews chase money more than other British people,” 1 in 5 believe “Jews’ loyalty to Israel makes them less loyal to Britain than other British people,” 1 in 6 believe “Jews believe they are better than other people” and “Jews have too much power in the media,” and 13 percent believe “Jews talk about the Holocaust too much in order to get sympathy.”

“The results of our survey are a shocking wake-up call straight after the atrocities in Paris,” said CAA chairman Gideon Falter.

No, they are not. They are results being reinforced on college campuses, where rank anti-Semitism, as one SOAS official put it, is part of the “atmosphere of open inquiry, mutual tolerance and intellectual freedom.” Such vapid nonsense is nothing more than an endorsement of the bankrupt notion that all ideas, no matter how despicable, are equally valid. Ideas that would abet the elimination of Israel first—with the rest of Western society following behind in short order.

Lena Dunham blasted for 'tasteless' 'Dog or Jewish Boyfriend?' article

Lena Dunham came under fire on Friday for an article published in the New Yorker that Jewish groups are calling “tasteless” and “offensive.”

The piece, a quiz titled “Dog or Jewish Boyfriend?” asks readers to guess which of the two Dunham is referring to in each of 35 descriptive statements.

“He doesn’t tip,” Dunham writes. “And he never brings his wallet anywhere.”

The Anti-Defamation League, the world’s preeminent Jewish advocacy group, said that while humor is subjective, Dunham’s article missed the mark.

“The piece is particularly troubling because it evokes memories of the ‘No Jews or Dogs Allowed’ signs from our own early history in this country, and also because, in a much more sinister way, many in the Muslim world today hatefully refer to Jews as ‘dogs,'” ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman said in a statement.

“While we understand that humor is its own special brand of expression and always try to give leeway to comedians, we wish that she had chosen another, less insensitive way to publicly reflect on her boyfriend’s virtues and vices,” Foxman added, saying the article “plays with offensive stereotypes” about Jews.

“We are surprised that the New Yorker chose to print it,” he said.

Dunham and the New Yorker were inundated with tweets condemning the article — which appears in the magazine’s Mar. 30 issue — and most of the criticism came from self-proclaimed Dunham fans or longtime New Yorker readers.

“I am so disappointed in both of you,” one Twitter user wrote. As a huge Lena fan and a Jewish woman I am appalled.”

Seriously, @NewYorker? Readers deserve better writers than .@lenadunham.

Lena Dunham Compares Jews to Dogs

Self-proclaimed sexual abuser of her sister Lena Dunham has now turned her rapier wit to the quaint anti-Semitic custom generally reserved for Nazis and radical Muslims of comparing Jews with dogs. Writing in The New Yorker, Dunham penned a piece comparing her dog to her Jewish boyfriend, asking, “Do the following statements refer to (a) my dog or (b) my Jewish boyfriend?”

She then lists a series of descriptions ranging from the silly to the blatantly anti-Jewish. “He’s crazy for cream cheese,” she writes (presumably about her boyfriend). “If it were up to him, every room in our place would be carpeted,” she jokes (presumably about her dog).

Then she gets to the anti-Semitic. “[H]e comes from a culture in which mothers focus every ounce of their attention on their offspring and don’t acknowledge their own need for independence as women. They are sucked by their children, who ultimately leave them as soon as they find suitable mates,” she writes, presumably about her boyfriend (who may be a dog). “As a result of this dynamic, he expects to be waited on hand and foot by the women in his life, and anything less than that makes him whiny and distant.”

Jews are cheap, too, Dunham writes. “He doesn’t tip,” says Dunham. Jews are also Woody Allen-style hypochondriacs: “He has a sensitive stomach and has to take two Dramamine before entering any moving vehicle…Every week it’s some new health issue: urine crystals, sprained foot, beef allergy.” Jews are also hairy! “In fact, he has hair all over his body, like most males who share his background.” And Jews are desperate for hot shikses:

One spring afternoon, we walked to Dumbo to check out a new artisanal-Popsicle stand, when we ran into my friend Jill. Jill is actually more of an acquaintance—I don’t know her well, but I really like her; she curates high-end terrariums and she’s a clog designer on the side. She’s really slim and well dressed, in an all-American, J. Crew-model sort of way. He was immediately all over her, panting and making a fool of himself. It was humiliating. Because here’s the thing: I am not a Jill. I will never be a Jill. And if that’s what he is looking for—some anorexic hipster with a glossy braid and freaking Swedish clog boots she sewed by hand—he should never have set his sights on me in the first place.

The anti-Semitic voice of a generation strikes again.

Anti-Semitic incidents rise in Florida, across nation

Last summer, South Florida saw a spate of anti-Semitic incidents involving synagogues and cars spray-painted with swastikas, “Hamas” and hateful symbols, as well as protestors holding offensive signs at anti-Israel rallies.

The region was not alone. Operation Protective Edge — a military operation Israel launched in the Gaza Strip during the summer of 2014 — fueled anti-Semitic activities across the country.

On Monday, the Anti-Defamation League released its annual Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents showing a slight increase in 2014 over the previous year in Florida and a huge jump nationwide.

Middle East tensions may have exacerbated anti-Semitism, said Hava L. Holzhauer, Anti-Defamation League’s Florida regional director.

“Those who harbor anti-Semitic attitudes use the conflict between Israel and Gaza as an excuse to express their hatred,” she said.

Seventy incidents of anti-Semitism were reported in Florida in 2014, a slight increase from 68 in ADL’s 2013 audit. Of the 70 incidents in 2014, 50 were classified as harassment, threats and events, five fewer than the previous year; 19 were classified as vandalism, up six from the previous year; one incident was classified as assault. There were no assaults in 2013.

The majority of Florida’s incidents — as has happened in previous years — occurred in the southern part of the state, with 21 incidents in Miami-Dade County, 19 in Palm Beach County and 11 in Broward. In 2013, 11 incidents were reported in Miami-Dade and 11 in Broward.

The ADL audit, which has been done every year since 1979, showed that there were 912 anti-Semitic incidents in the United States in 2014, an increase from 751 incidents in 2013. Florida continues to be in the top four states reporting incidents of anti-Semitism, with New York, California, and New Jersey reporting more incidents than Florida.

“It’s disheartening,” Holzhauer said. “We have been on a trend of decrease. This is a big increase nationwide. It says we have a lot of work to do in education. It’s the only tool that combats hate effectively.”

Among this year’s incidents:

▪  The two front pillars of Torah V'Emunah, an Orthodox synagogue at 1000 NE 174th St. in North Miami Beach, were spray-painted with swastikas and the word “Hamas” in July. At the time, Rabbi Yerucham Benzinger said he felt the synagogue had been “violated.”

"It is something very painful to realize," he said.

Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime, but no one has been charged.

▪ Also in July, several cars were vandalized in Miami Beach. A couple walking at about 6:30 a.m. spotted cream cheese smeared on a car spelling the words "Hamas" and "Jew," and another car also was egged in the same 4200 block of Meridian Avenue in Miami Beach. At the time, a police report indicated that the incident was being investigated as a hate crime. The daughter of the cars' owners said the family was shocked by the incident.

▪  The same month, during a protest against Operation Protective Edge in Gaza, outside the Consulate General of Israel to Florida and Puerto Rico’s office at 100 Biscayne Blvd. a demonstrator was spotted holding a sign that said “Long Live Gaza,” “Long Live Hamas” and “[expletive] Jews.”

▪ In September, a banner outside of Miami Beach’s oldest Conservative temple, Temple Emanu-el, was vandalized with swastikas. “The message is clear. It’s a message of hate and intolerance,” said Temple Emanu-el Rabbi Marc Philippe at the time. “And whenever you have intolerance, you have problems.”

▪ In October, a Miami Beach Jewish family was on vacation and returned to find their apartment vandalized with swastikas and Stars of David following a robbery.

▪  In October, the website of Temple Kol Ami Emanu- El in Plantation was hacked by a group calling itself “Team System Dz.” The group redirected visitors to a page with messages expressing support for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Does Jon Stewart’s Replacement, Trevor Noah, Have a Jewish Problem?

Yesterday, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency appeared to be the first media outlet to notice a disturbing tweet from Comedy Central’s new hire Trevor Noah, who is pegged to replace Jon Stewart as host of the Daily Show:

Anti-Semitism in US Spikes After Nearly a Decade of Decline

Anti-Semitic incidents in the U.S. spiked 21 percent last year, according to the Anti-Defamation League, unsettling many American Jews who had thought that hatred of Jews and Judaism was on the decline, at least here at home.

The ADL has released a spring report that, for nearly the past 10 years, showed fewer incidents targeting American Jews. That downward trend contrasted sharply to the rising tide of anti-Semitism in Europe — recently witnessed in the January killings of four Jews at a kosher supermarket in Paris.

"The United States still continues to be unique in history" as a safe place for Jews, said Abraham Foxman, the ADL's national director.

But this new ADL report casts a shadow on the idea that the U.S., which is home to about 40 percent of the world's Jews, stands in stark contrast to European anti-Semitism and far higher levels of antipathy against Jews in the Middle East, as reflected in studies of anti-Semitic attitudes worldwide.

"It's still different here than anywhere else, but don't take anything for granted, and be concerned," Foxman said.

The ADL counted 912 incidents in 2014, up from 751 the previous year.

The report includes assaults, vandalism and harassment targeting Jews, Jewish property and institutions that were reported to ADL's 27 regional offices and to law enforcement. It shows 36 assaults, up from 31 in 2013; 363 incidents of vandalism in 2014, compared with 315 in 2013; and 513 incidents of threats and harassment in 2014, contrasted with 405 in 2013.

Though the report does not consider anti-Zionist or anti-Israel expressions (unless they cross the line into anti-Semitism), ADL researchers nonetheless correlate the rise in anti-Semitism to last summer's 50-day war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. During the war, for example, a vandal in Malibu, Calif., painted "Jews=Killers" and "Jews are Killing Innocent Children" near the entrance to a Jewish summer camp last July. Another vandal spray-painted "Free Palestine" and "God Bless Gaza" in red on a synagogue in Lowell, Mass.

Those were among the 139 anti-Semitic incidents reported in July 2014, more than double the 51 reported incidents for the same month a year earlier.

The ADL also called 2014 a particularly violent year that included the fatal shootings at a Jewish community center in Overland Park, Kan.

Separately from ADL, Moment magazine editor Nadine Epstein launched a campaign this week to combat anti-Semitism by encouraging more Jews to invite non-Jews to their Passover seders, or ritual meals, where the story of the ancient Israelites' escape from slavery in Egypt is retold.

The idea sparked some controversy among some traditional Jews because a strict interpretation of Jewish law actually forbids non-Jews at seders, which will be held on Friday and Saturday this year (April 3 and 4). The prohibition, which is rarely observed or even known by many Jews, stems from a rabbinic opinion that Jews should not cook for those who do not observe the laws of the holiday.

"If every family does this, some six million non-Jews will experience a Seder this year, and at the very least taste traditional Passover foods and learn of their significance — not to mention gain an invaluable window into Jewish life and values, and a better understanding of the connection Jews feel to the land of Israel," she wrote in the New York Post.

Common Core teaches kids to 'divide Jerusalem'

A Boston University professor has defended to WND his creation of a Common Core-compliant lesson plan that uses role-playing workshops to teach students to sympathize with Hamas, create a Palestinian state and divide the city of Jerusalem.

Professor Carl Hobert’s “Whose Jerusalem?” project has been lauded by those at the pinnacle of the education establishment as an important work that will, in the words of Boston University School of Education Dean Hardin Coleman, “help students acquire the skills they need” in conflict resolution “to be successful in the 21st century.”

But the role-playing exercises have also come under fire recently from pro-Israel groups. One group, Boston-based Americans for Peace and Tolerance headed by Charles Jacobs, released a 27-minute documentary film last month that derides Hobert’s project as an “attempt to indoctrinate” rather than educate.

The role-playing games where students pretend to represent Arab, Israeli or American interests have been used in hundreds of high schools across America, Hobert told WND. Last year, the program was added to the Common Core-approved list of curricula and received Race to the Top funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The workshop is presented in many schools as part of a “global education” initiative, which is a strong focus of Common Core-compliant curricula.

Creating activists in the classroom?

The “global citizen” approach to teaching social studies has been adopted not only in public schools but many private and religious schools as well. Hobert is seen in APT’s documentary, for example, describing the merits of his course work at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, a college-prep school in California.

Hobert admits on camera in the documentary that his mission in designing “Whose Jerusalem?” goes beyond educating students. He hopes to turn them into activists.

Hobert believes in “educational, civil disobedience, where students are learning about the Middle East, and they’re putting pressure on our government to create a Palestinian state,” he told Qatar-owned Al Jazeera TV in March 2012.

Of particular interest to Hobert is an attempt to reach Jewish students and turn them against the state of Israel, according to the APT documentary.

“When a student goes, ‘I am devoutly Jewish and I’ve got family members in Israel, I would like to be a member of Likud Party,’ guess what we make that student? A member of Hamas,” Hobert said.

But Hobert told WND in a phone interview Wednesday that this is only part of the story.

He said he would be just as adamant in putting an Arab student in the position of having to role-play on the Israeli side of the issue. He said Jacobs made his documentary based on old information and the charges of brainwashing are unfair, even deceitful.

Hobert said he has had a 30-year passion for teaching conflict-resolution to students and that passion came together several years ago in the “Whose Jerusalem?” role-playing workshop. To receive federal funding, he said he made it more broad-based and suitable for classes in world history II, Middle Eastern studies, contemporary world history, “and what most people would call global issues in grades 9 through 12.”

The six role players are Likud, Labor, Fatah, Hamas, the Arab league, which represents the countries around Israel, and the quartet made up of the U.S., U.N., Russia and European Union.

“Those are the six role plays and in each you get four pages of confidential instructions. As you try to divide Jerusalem, each of those groups would be one table with 10 students around it,” Hobert said. “It’s neat. Students are looking at many issues around the world, and they’re not brainwashed. They’re taught to look at many possibilities as opposed to black and white.”

He said the program was inspired by the concepts of “experiential education” advocated by the likes of John Dewey, Montessori, and the Model United Nations program that has been taught in schools for decades.

“It is not to indoctrinate; it is to have students engage in conflict resolution so they learn negotiating skills,” he said. “So Charles Jacobs’ claims, when he’s using old material, and saying it’s to indoctrinate, are a lie.”

Decide for yourself. Watch the documentary critical of “Whose Jerusalem?” by Americans for Peace and Tolerance:

Critics such as Jacobs and APT say the program “whitewashes terrorism, promotes an anti-Israel and anti-American political agenda, and encourages young people to sympathize with Hamas,” reported the College Fix.

Hamas is on the U.S. State Department’s list of designated foreign terrorist organizations. The Islamic terrorist group has in its charter a call for the elimination of the state of Israel, meaning it wants a “one-state” solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

“Whose Jerusalem?” fails “to meet the basic rules of evidence and logic and attempt[s ] to indoctrinate students, especially Jewish students, against the state of Israel,” according to the APT documentary.

Schools going global with support of U.N.

By incorporating globalist principles into the curriculum, students are taught to be good “citizens of the world” as opposed to good citizens of America, whose sovereign status is seen as subservient to that of the United Nations and other global institutions, said Alex Newman, co-author of a new book, “Crimes of the Educators: How Utopians are Using Government Schools to Destroy America’s Children.”

“It is really amazing how open and transparent the U.N. and especially UNESCO, led by an actual communist, has become in its ‘global citizen’ indoctrination programs,” Newman said, referring to Irina Bokova, a Bulgarian communist and current UNESCO chief.

These attempts to globalize the classrooms and turn students against the idea of being Americans first have been hiding in plain view for a long time, Newman said, yet he’s seen very little push-back from states or local school boards. That’s probably because the curricula comes with federal funding, and states are always looking for ways to augment their budgets with federal dollars.

“All over their websites, they brag about transforming children’s attitudes, views, beliefs and behavior using so-called education,” Newman said. “They’ve been doing this openly for decades, as we show, using primary-source documents, in ‘Crimes of the Educators.’”

Obama’s secretary of education, Arne Duncan, even boasts that, “with UNESCO as his ‘global partner,’ they are using government schools to indoctrinate students, even calling education a ‘weapon’ to ‘change the world,’” Newman said. “This should be very disturbing to anyone who values liberty, Judeo-Christian values, biblical religion, national sovereignty, and the principles America was founded upon. It needs to be exposed and shut down.”

Hobert is an academic leader in the push toward “global citizenship.” He created his nonprofit, “Axis of Hope,” in 2002 to, as he says, “teach youth in their formative years of life what I call preventative diplomacy; how to work together as a team to prevent conflict. Are they going to prevent conflict, or are they going to get out there and try to make a lot of money, and exacerbate conflict?”

Boston University has supported Hobert’s Axis of Hope vision but recommended he change the name to the Global Literacy Institute. Teachers from around the world will be able to come and learn from Hobert how to teach their students to resolve problems on a global, national and local level, he said.

No Chomsky involvement, Hobert says

APT says Hobert has admitted to receiving guidance for “Whose Jerusalem?” from anti-Israel professors Noam Chomsky of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Denis Sullivan of Northeastern University.

Hobert told WND he was inspired to learn foreign languages from Chomsky but has not been influenced by his views on Israel.

“As I look out the window, Noam’s office is right across the river (at MIT). Charles Jacobs again warps his words to try to get people on his side. I’ve known Noam for years. He’s the rock star of linguistics; he taught me about universal grammar and how the brain works. Can you imagine seeing this research and how it applies to a child’s formative years? And in addition to linguistics, I thought, why can’t we teach kids to be more fluent in not only languages but cultures and conflict resolution while still in their formative years? So that’s a lie,” Hobert said. “Another lie. It’s really tragic.”

As for his connections with Sullivan at Northeastern, Hobert said:

“I wanted to talk to somebody who had a pro-Palestinian outlook so he could help me with his expertise on different groups: one Fatah, and number two, Hamas. We all look at Hamas as a terrorist organization but Hamas also has a political wing. Israel pushed us to call Hamas a terrorist organization. There are many in the world who know it has sprouted to create a political wing as well.”

WND asked Hobert if he believes that Hamas’ “political wing” is entirely separate from its military wing or would do anything that would undercut its military plans for the region.

“Yes, I do see the two as separate. Can you see their military wing building schools, offering food distribution, and social welfare programs?” he said. “It’s the same with Hezbollah (in Lebanon). To teach students, or to offer to students, those different possibilities, are they a terror organization or do they also offer social programs, as opposed to offering one aspect and shoving it down their throats, with, ‘I’m telling you what’s right’? This is what we’re doing.”

Role-playing students

At one point in the APT documentary, titled “Axis of Bias,” the camera flips to a female student making a presentation while playing the role of a member of the Arab League. “We want justice for Palestine and punishment for Israel for what they have done,” the student says.

“This is exactly what happens with Model U.N. and also in law schools,” Hobert told WND. “You are forced to role-play different sides. You have to be able to know what is going on in the minds of others.”

Hobert is an author of several books on education and a prolific speaker. Some of his topics include “Weaving Global Responsibility Into the Fabric of Your School,” and “Educating Global Citizens,” according to the B.U. website.

On his LinkedIn page, he describes his expertise as follows:

“Focus on ‘Educating Global Citizens’ seminar and creation of ‘Intellectual Outward Bound’ conflict resolution simulation case-studies.”

Hobert likened his approach to that of his favorite NFL quarterback Tom Brady and his coach, Bill Belichick, of the New England Patriots.

“He’s gotten a lot of unwanted attention lately from ‘deflategate,’ but Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, they study opposing quarterbacks and they can get into the minds of every single player every week like nobody else,” Hobert said. “Can you imagine students learning that way to try to get in the middle of the eye of the hurricane of conflict resolution? It works like a charm, and it’s unfortunate that zealots like Charles Jacobs are so infuriated.”

Hobert said he believes Jacobs’ criticisms boil down to three things.

“He’s upset that, A) I got Race-to-the-Top funding to redo the whole case study that still includes Fatah and Hamas, B) that it’s Common Core-based, and C) that I open-sourced it so it’s free now for every school to use.”

Academic group votes to censure University of Illinois

A leading academic group voted Saturday to censure the University of Illinois' flagship campus over its decision not to hire a professor following his anti-Israel Twitter messages, a vote the university's chancellor said will have repercussions and is being taken seriously.

In a voice vote, the membership of the American Association of University Professors affirmed the censure at the group's annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

The decision came in reaction to the university rescinding Steven Salaita's job offer following his posts on Twitter concerning Israel and the West Bank.

The vote hinged on the principle of academic freedom, said Anita Levy, an association staff member involved with the group's investigation of the matter. A report by the group described Salaita's tweets as expressions of "outrage in strong language over the war in Gaza."

Rejecting the professor's appointment "violated Professor Salaita's academic freedom and cast a pall of uncertainty over the degree to which academic freedom is understood and respected" at the school, Levy said, reading from a statement after Saturday's vote.

The academic association currently has 56 institutions on its censure list.

University spokeswoman Robin Kaler said the school has an "unyielding commitment to the principles of academic freedom."

And, in an email sent to faculty on Saturday, University Chancellor Phyllis Wise said the decision was "disappointing, but not unexpected."

"We take this decision by the AAUP seriously," Wise said in the email. "We understand that it will have repercussions on the scholarly activities of many in our community, and we intend to address both the censure and the underlying concerns through our established processes of shared governance."

An AAUP censure is a relatively rare condemnation that can damage a university's reputation in the academic world. Some faculty members at the University of Illinois have said they believe it might lead job hunters working at other schools to choose not to work at the Urbana-Champaign campus, though other faculty members have discounted that idea.

The university rescinded Salaita's job offer after some donors complained his tweets were anti-Semitic. He has since sued the school. The censure vote came one day after a judge ordered the university to turn over thousands of pages of documents sought by Salaita.

On Saturday, his attorneys issued a statement calling the censure "a serious blemish on the university's record."

In October 2013, Salaita was offered a professor's job in the university's Native American Studies Department, starting in August 2014. He accepted and quit his job at Virginia Tech University.

But in the summer of 2014, Salaita, whose father is from Jordan, wrote a long series of Twitter messages complaining about Israeli military action in Gaza. Some of those messages included profanity and a few were considered anti-Semitic by university donors who wrote to Wise.

"Zionists: transforming 'anti-Semitism' from something horrible into something honorable since 1948," he wrote in one message.

In August, just before school was set to begin again and after Salaita had received his class assignments, Wise told Salaita he wouldn't get the job after all. She later said the university was concerned about the "abusive nature" of his messages.

His lawsuit claims he had already been hired. The university counters that the board of trustees had not yet approved his hire, a step required for all tenured faculty members.

Israel-Hating Professor Hired to Teach Class on Israel at U of Missouri
U.S. Higher Education Goes Down the Rabbit Hole

Would you let David Duke teach a class on African-American history? How about Anita Bryant starting an LGBTQ studies program?  Beyond incomprehensible – the makings of a Saturday Night Live skit. But this is no laughing matter. This insanity is a reality and your children are being indoctrinated.

George Smith despises Israel. The University of Missouri (Mizzou) biology professor has called the creation of the Jewish State “a shameful chapter in Jewish history.” Smith finds humor in Hamas rocket attacks against Israeli citizens. When Sderot (Israel) resident Noam Bedein came to Mizzou to discuss the nearly 13,000 rockets Hamas has fired, killing and injuring the people of Sderot, Smith showed up and distributed fliers that mocked the attacks – justifying terrorism because the average Palestinian has to “go through a checkpoint every time he has to take a sh*t.”

But in their infinite wisdom, university officials at Mizzou felt that Smith’s decades-long history of denouncing the Jewish State and its right to exist did not disqualify him from being a fair and objective lecturer on Israel’s history. They also saw no need for him to have any formal education or expertise in Middle East studies. Smith, a scientist, was approved to teach … wait for it … “Perspectives on Zionism.”
University of Missouri biology professor George Smith has called the creation of the Jewish State “a shameful chapter in Jewish history.”

University of Missouri biology professor George Smith has called the creation of Israel “a shameful chapter in Jewish history.” (Mizzou faculty page)

Your eyes are not deceiving you. A class about Zionism, the belief that the Jewish people have a G-d-given right, affirmed by international law, to a country of their own and that that country belongs in the biblical Land of Israel, will be taught by a completely unqualified faculty member who calls the establishment of Israel the “Palestinian Holocaust.”

However, leave it to the students to see through a college’s progressive agenda and academic malfeasance to right a wrong.

As reported by JNS.org, “Perspectives on Zionism,” which was scheduled to be taught by self-proclaimed “post-Zionist and Nakba [catastrophe] Jew-in-law” George Smith, was nixed due to no enrollment, according to a June 10 announcement.

With Israel under siege on college campuses, often in the form of blatant anti-Semitism, don’t tell me no students were interested in this course. Students associated with pro-Israel organizations such as Christians United for Israel, StandWithUs and Students Supporting Israel sprang into action and educated their peers on the absurdly offensive nature of this course.

Where the Mizzou administrators failed, the students prevailed.

In keeping with the new tradition in academia of excusing anti-Semitism and the delegitimizing of Israel under the banner of “progressive thinking,” the University of California, Riverside was comfortable with blatant anti-Semites teaching a course on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Student Tina Matar, who heads the UCR chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, an organization dedicated to the elimination of Israel, was teaching the course. The course’s faculty sponsor was English professor David Lloyd, founder of the U.S. Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.

This class was so blatantly one-sided that the non-partisan Verity Educate, a non-profit group that analyzes the accuracy and objectivity of classroom curricula, determined that the course’s “written material, particularly Dr. Steven Salaita’s ‘Israel’s Dead Soul,’ raises extremely serious questions about whether the course itself contributes to anti-Semitism.”

The offensive nature of this course was part and parcel of the epidemic of anti-Semitism that has engulfed the 10-school UC education system in recent years, from Holocaust imagery appearing on campuses, to a Jewish student’s religious identity becoming an issue disqualifying her from serving on student government.

To say UCR timing in conjunction with their asinine judgment was abhorrent may be an understatement.

But it’s not just anti-Semitism and disdain for Israel being promoted by academia. Apparently beheading Christians, throwing gays off buildings and turning women into sex slaves is also hunky-dory.

As my colleague and professor emeritus Abraham H. Miller wrote last week in the Washington Times:

If you want to understand why academicians are often society’s court jesters, then the program titled, “ISIS – An Historical Perspective,” presented at the University of California, Santa Barbara last month, would have gone a long way toward providing an explanation.

Up to bat in defense of Islamic extremism and to absolve the Islamic State of the brutality that daily lacerates the sensitivities of civilized human beings were assistant professor of history Sherene Seikaly and her colleague, professor Adam Sabra.

Billed as seeking to “contextualize” ISIS‘ formation and actions, the two professors engaged in nonsense that should have incited the audience to question how they ever were awarded degrees.

Seikaly and Sabra are in good company when it comes to excusing terrorism and blaming America. Earlier this month Drexel University in Philadelphia gave an honorary degree to Noam Chomsky. The MIT linguistics professor (emeritus) has embraced, literally, the Iranian terror group Hezbollah and has called the principles of Hamas as “preferable to the policies of America and Israel.” Hamas charter calls for the annihilation of the Jewish State and Jewish people.

“That’s the reason they’re called lessons,” the Gryphon remarked: “because they lessen from day to day.” – Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

By the way, your kid’s tuition payment is due next month.

'Stabbing Jews for Peace' Posters Skewer Pro-Palestinian Campus Group
"Why is SJP lying?"

The University of Chicago was the scene this week of a "poster debate" about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with the mysterious appearance of posters skewering a pro-Palestinian student group, according to DNAinfo.com.

Zach Taylor, student leader for the radical nationwide campus group Students for Justice in Palestine, said he believes the anonymous posters accusing the group of lying and supporting the current stabbing intifada in Israel were a response to a poster campaign that his group started last week that was critical of the treatment of Palestinians by Israeli security forces, DNAinfo reports. One of their fliers, for example, accused security forces of murdering an innocent 13-year-old.

Soon thereafter, anonymous posters began appearing, hitting back at the SJP posters. "Why is SJP lying?" they read.

Then on Monday, a poster appeared brilliantly satirizing the SJP logo and acronym, substituting the words “Stabbing Jews for Peace" - an obvious reference to the recent spate of stabbings of Israelis by Arab terrorists.

The posters were found by students posted in three university buildings on Monday. “That’s really disturbing,” said a recent grad of the university working on campus. “If that’s a poster on this campus, that’s terrifying.” Terrifying? That someone is actually beginning to push back at the anti-Semitic propaganda SJP spreads on campuses nationwide?

The posters have since been taken down.

The Subtle Propaganda Battle Over Maps Of Israel

Recently released maps that purport to demonstrate a progressive theft of Palestinian land by Israel since the late 1940’s, have caused an uproar in news circles.

The highly controversial graphics were aired on cable news network MSNBC, which later labeled them “factually wrong” in an apologetic retraction.

Perhaps the most obvious discrepancy was reflected in the first of the four maps which showed Palestine, a state that has never formally existed.

Based on the maps, MSNBC anchors Kate Snow and Martin Fletcher concluded that the areas where the Palestinians have been living have “grown significantly smaller” since 1946 and further described the progression displayed as ‘shocking”.

The Washington Free Beacon reported that the images promoted by the network have long been criticized by scholars and anti-Semitism watchdog groups as mere anti-Israel propaganda.

Other experts have also reportedly described the maps as factually inaccurate and highly misleading.

One such reported analysis is that of Breitbart’s Pamela Geller, which in part stated: “The fallaciousness of the map MSNBC used is demonstrated by one simple fact: the flag of Palestine before 1948 featured the Star of David. This is further proof … of the falsity of the vicious historical revisionism by the Muslim world to erase the Jewish State and create a mythical Islamic narrative surrounding five thousand years of Jewish history”.

Another attempt to set the historical record straight was also made by Shany Mor, former director for foreign policy of the Israeli National Security Council. Mor stated that “…none of pre-1948 Palestine was under the political authority of Arabs or Jews.

It was ruled by the British Mandatory government, established by the League of Nations for the express purpose of creating a ‘Jewish National Home.’ It was also—contrary to the claims of innumerable pro-Palestinian activists—the first time a discrete political entity called ‘Palestine’ existed in modern history. And this entity was established in order to fulfill a goal that was essentially Zionist in nature.”

Mor observes that another misleading aspect of the maps is that all non-Jewish owned land is labeled Palestinian. This view, Mor states “…was quite simply not the case”. Additionally, the maps should also show small patches of private Arab land alongside the privately owned Jewish lands, which they do not.

However, the MSNBC broadcast was welcomed and presumed accurate by anti-Israeli activists and journalists, who hailed the network for its analysis. This support is evidently derived from the larger context of the Middle East crisis, and endeavors to further highlight supposed encroachments on Arab land through historical Jewish aggressions.

One might think that the recent MSNBC map distortion was an isolated ‘once in a blue moon’ type oversight.

Yet, there seems to be an increasing number of similar cases in which otherwise reputable map publishers tend to overlook the geographical existence of Israel.

In some past events reported over the past few years:

1. Israel was named Palestine in a map given to Paris schools in an incident reported in September 2015. The omission was blamed on a production error;

2. At the San Diego State University, California in 2013, investigations found that the omission of Israel in a map was deliberate, “in order to reflect the views of Arabic speakers in the Middle East”;

3. Late 2014, UK publishers Harper Collins apologized for the omission of Israel from their Collins Middle East Atlas. It would reportedly have been “unacceptable” to include Israel in atlases intended for the Middle East, so Israel was deleted to satisfy “local preferences.”

4. Giant publisher for children’s books, Scholastic., Inc, omitted Israel from their map publications in 2013. At the time the incident was reported, they remained non-committal as to whether they would correct the omission.

5. In March an Air France in-flight map omitted Israel. This anomaly, described by the airline as a “map scale and display problem” was discovered by a passenger who then blew the whistle. Similarly, in 2009, British Midland International Airlines apologized for omitting Israel from their in-flight maps, also attributed to a technical error.

It would be hard to find such examples of other nations being omitted or factually distorted on such a regular basis. Why is this?

These cases suggest a subtle ongoing propaganda war which some Bible scholars believe will eventually culminate in an international clamor for the total annihilation of Israel and her official removal from the world map:

They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee (Psalm 83:4, 5).

WALMART: SATAN IS FINE, BUT NOT ISRAELI SOLDIER COSTUME
Halloween fighter 'very problematic, and offensive to many people

Walmart has decided Jewish kids can be zombies or devils for Halloween, but not Israeli Defense Forces soldiers.

The company sided late Wednesday with anti-Israel activists who complained IDF costumes were unacceptable.

“The costumes are very problematic, and offensive to many people. The Israeli forces are responsible for the continued death and occupation of the Palestinian people. Such a symbol of fear, violence and a long history of dispossession should not be used for entertainment purposes,” Samer Khalaf, the committee president for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, said in a statement Wednesday.

The costume originally sold for $27.44 before being pulled from Walmart’s online store. Critics also took issue with an “Arab Sheik” option with a hook-nose.

The Israel Project, a pro-Israel organization based in Washington, D.C., immediately began a social media campaign to counter Walmart’s decision, the Washington Free Beacon reported Thursday.

In “Stop the Islamization of America: A Practical Guide to the Resistance,” renowned activist Pamela Geller provides the answer, offering proven, practical guidance on how freedom lovers can stop jihadist initiatives in local communities.

“Israeli soldiers are heroes. They fight every day to protect innocents from terror. But Walmart removed an Israeli army costume from their website. Why? They surrendered to a vicious hate campaign – a campaign to demonize Israel. If you support Israel, you must take action now,” the Israel Project wrote on its Facebook page Thursday.

Walmart did not respond to the Free Beacon’s request for comment.
