Saudis Threaten Russia With Olympic Terrorist Attacks Unless It Abandons Syria Support

Details of secret talks between Putin, Saudi prince leaked; Intel head admits to controlling Chechen jihadists in Syria

Aug 27, 2013 Maybe Alex got one right for once??

Saudi intelligence has issued a tacit threat to have terrorist attacks carried out in Russia at the Winter Olympics in February 2014, should the state continue to support the Assad regime in Syria.

The threat was revealed in leaked transcripts of a closed-door meeting three weeks ago between Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1Ut-wyrpxY&feature=player_embedded

It appears that following initial vocal concerns expressed by Gulf state diplomats and senior leaders of the Syrian opposition, the leaked material was provided to the Russian media. More details then emerged in the Lebanese newspaper As-Safir, which is sympathetic to Hezbollah and thus extremely inhospitable toward Saudi Arabia.

The respected middle east news agency Al Monitor carries a translated version of the As-Safir report which suggests that during the talks, Bandar, who heads the primary Saudi intelligence agency, allegedly presented a cornucopia of offers and threats with regards to Syria.

In return for Russia’s cooperation, Bandar is alleged to have promised to safeguard Russia’s naval base in Syria should Assad be forced from power.

Perhaps the most interesting snippet in the report, has Bandar suggesting that should Russia elect not to reach an agreement over Syria, Chechen terrorist attacks may be carried out on the Russian hosted Winter Olympics next year in Sochi.

“I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics next year.” Bandar is alleged to have said. What makes the pledge threatening is that he is also quoted as saying “The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us.”

Bandar also allegedly stated that Chechen terrorists currently in Syria were a tool that could be used at will.

“The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us, and they will not move in the Syrian territory’s direction without coordinating with us.” Bandar is quoted as saying. “These groups do not scare us. We use them in the face of the Syrian regime but they will have no role or influence in Syria’s political future.” he added.

Bandar also allegedly said that he was speaking with the full backing of the US government.

The London Telegraph also reported on the leaked notes, noting the Saudi prince’s attempt to further sweeten Putin with a secret sweeping oil deal and a pledge to safeguard Russia’s gas contracts should he abandon support for the Assad government.

The deal appears to be in the form of an offer to form a Russian/OPEC alliance on oil production that would significantly affect global markets. While Syria is not a major oil producer, any military action taken against the country could have wider repercussions on oil markets.

Vladimir Putin is said to have responded “We know that you have supported the Chechen terrorist groups for a decade. And that support, which you have frankly talked about just now, is completely incompatible with the common objectives of fighting global terrorism that you mentioned. We are interested in developing friendly relations according to clear and strong principles.”

The Russian president is also said to have commented “Our stance on Assad will never change. We believe that the Syrian regime is the best speaker on behalf of the Syrian people, and not those liver eaters.” referring to the rebels.

Bandar is said to have responded that there would be “no escape from the military option” if Russia were to decline the Saudi terms for accord.

The leaked transcripts do dovetail with initial reports that sourced anonymous European and Arab diplomats.

It is possible that the leaked transcripts could be embellished by Russian intelligence, for propaganda purposes. However, the detail contained within them makes them appear authentic. Regardless, the report makes for compelling reading, particularly considering Saudi Arabia’s eagerness to take decisive action to overthrow and remove the Syrian government permanently.

Webster Tarpley has also recently detailed the fallout of the Saudi/Russian standoff:

Islamist militants seeking to form Islamist state in the North Caucasus are suspected, the same group led by Doku Umarov that apparently influenced the Boston marathon bombers.

At least 18 people were killed and 40 others wounded when an explosion tore through a train station in the southern Russian city of Volgograd on Sunday, in an attack blamed on a female suicide bomber, Russian media and officials said.

Regional interior ministry spokeswoman Svetlana Smolyaninova told the ITAR-TASS news agency that the blast occurred inside the train station at around 12:45 pm (0845 GMT).

The news agency said the explosion took place near the metal detectors stationed at the entrance to the city’s main train station.

Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee said in a statement shortly after that a female suicide bomber had carried out the attack.

The explosion is the deadliest such blast to take place in Russia outside the volatile North Caucasus region in nearly three years.

Security fears for Sochi

Coming just two months after another suicide bomber struck in the same Russian city, it will bolster fears of attacks by Islamist militants as Russia prepares to host the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Russia suicide attack: Suspected female bomber kills at least 13 at train station

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered all necessary security to be enforced after a suspected suicide bomber killed at least 13 Sunday. The Russian government has pledged to make the Sochi Games the "safest Olympics in history," deploying thousands of soldiers and police to protect athletes and spectators.

MOSCOW - At least 13 people were killed in a terror attack by a suspected female suicide bomber at a railway station in Russia Sunday, officials said - the second deadly attack in three days as the country prepares to host the Winter Olympics.

The National Anti-Terrorist Committee said the explosion, at the central railway station in the city of Volgograd, was an act of terror and that a criminal investigation has been launched.

The attack, which happened at about 1 p.m. local time (4 a.m. ET), heightens concern about terrorism ahead of February's Olympics in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

On Friday, a car bomb killed three people in the southern Russian city of Pyatigorsk, 170 miles east of Sochi. In October, another female suicide bomber was blamed for a bus explosion in Volgograd that killed five people.

The Committee said preliminary findings after Sunday's blast showed that the suspect was female, but federal security services were still investigation.

"Today at around 1300 an unconfirmed explosive device was detonated in front of the metal detector at the entrance to the train station in Volgograd,” the Committee said on its website. “The preliminary findings show that it was activated by a female suicide bomber."

Russian Investigative Committee Representative Vladimir Markin told state news agency Interfax that 13 were dead.

Other reports in Russian media said that as many as 18 were killed, and at least 50 injured.

NBC, prepared for the worst at Sochi

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, will be one of the biggest news stories of the coming months. There will of course be the games themselves, but in the minds of many of those attending and covering it at NBC, the uncertain security situation in the region holds a prominent spot.

“I think we all know as we head to Sochi that we are in for an interesting ride,” said NBC “Today” co-anchor Matt Lauer, speaking to press inside Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza Tuesday afternoon.

Lauer recalled the 1996 games, where the crash of TWA Flight 800 caused him and his crew to leave Atlanta to cover the breaking news, only to have the Olympic Park bombing strike when they returned to the games.

“There are a lot of groups that would like to take advantage of the Olympics to make a point, whether it is a positive point or a negative point, so we go there with our eyes wide open,” he added.

In a perverse way, the uncertainty surrounding the games makes for something amounting to “Must See TV,” as viewers may tune in to see if anything unexpected happens.

“Although obviously we have our fingers crossed that nothing happens, if anything the prospect of a terrorist event, the controversy of the anti-gay laws, those things in an odd way have increased awareness and interest in those games,” NBC’s chief Olympics anchor Bob Costas told reporters Tuesday.

For the Sochi games, security concerns are significantly higher than previous Olympics. While every Olympic Games are considered possible targets for violence, Sochi is a unique case.

For starters, one of the largest terrorist groups operating in Russia, the Caucasus Emirate, has promised to attack the games. While previous Olympics were widely believed to be targets, there hasn’t been a declaration of attack as there is with Sochi. Last month, two suicide bombers struck in Volgograd, Russia, killing 30 people. Those attacks heightened fears of possible attacks in Sochi, just over 600 miles away.

The last Olympics which saw any sort of major violent attack was the 1996 Atlanta games where a pipe bomb was detonated inside Olympic Park, killing two people. There was also the infamous massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympics, where the Black September group kidnapped and killed 11 Israeli athletes.

What happened in 1972 is still fresh in the minds of many of those covering Sochi.

“Sadly, at every Olympics since ’72, that has been on people’s minds as you are going in,” Jim Bell, the executive producer of NBC’s Olympics coverage, told Capital New York. “You’re thinking, ‘Well, ****, what if something really bad happens?’ because it still has that potential.”

To that end, NBC, which paid nearly $1 billion for the exclusive TV rights to the Sochi Olympics, has put together a game plan for coverage, in the event that it needs to use it.

NBC News senior V.P. Alex Wallace tells Capital that they already have foreign correspondent Jim Maceda in Sochi, covering the aftermath of the Volgograd bombings. In addition, chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel is in the region “to kind of become steeped in all the issues of the Caucasus,” Bell says. "These games are taking place in something close to a volatile region," he added.

NBC News will have “Today” and “NBC Nightly News” originating from Sochi, along with the weekend editions of both programs. Talent from those programs, along with top NBC News executives, will be in Russia during the games. Anchors Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Brian Williams and Lester Holt will anchor from the region, while new NBC News president Deborah Turness will be on-site as well.

Regardless of what happens, NBC expects the security situation to be addressed during its news and sports programming.

“I think that is a really big story, and I can’t see us not covering it while we are there, because it just feels like the story that everyone is talking about,” Wallace says. “Even if nothing happens, I think that in itself could be a story, ‘look what they did to keep anything from happening.’”

Costas says he expects to discuss the situation during his programs as well.

“At the beginning, we will discharge our responsibility in a straightforward way, because framing those issues is part of the backdrop, it is like describing the weather at a ballgame, or what the crowd is like, you have to frame the circumstances under which these events are about to take place,” Costas said. “Then you return to those issues if they impact the games.”

NBC also finds itself in the position of having to not just cover any potential news, but to help its 2,700 or so staff and guests if something happens as well.

“The security of our employees, our freelancers and our guests is our highest priority, and we take it very seriously,” said Mark Lazarus, the chairman of NBC Sports. “We have a full team of people there dedicated to making sure our guests and we are all safe.”

“This is Vladimir Putin’s Olympics and Russia’s moment to shine, they are confident that they are secure,” Wallace added. “I would not say we are taking any extra precautions, we take precautions wherever we go, based on the level of concern obviously, but I’m not worried about our staff.”

NBC is sending fewer staff to the Sochi games than it did for the last two games in London and Vancouver. Security may be one factor, but logistics is another. Vancouver and London are easy to get to, and locals there speak English. Sochi, isolated from major cities in southern Russia, is extremely difficult to get to, and few people there speak English. Translators, equipment and even cars have to be brought in from abroad for the games.

The complexity of the coverage is enormous, but the firepower is as well. If all goes to plan, it will be unleashed during coverage of the athletic events, but if something does go wrong, no one at the company will be caught off-guard.

Costas recalled the effort put in by ABC Sports anchor Jim McKay during the 1972 Munich Games. McKay’s coverage of that event became a defining moment in his career.

“When the tragedy happened in 1972, in Munich, and Jim distinguished himself in such an exemplary way, the world was so different,” Costas said. “There was no CNN, there was no ESPN, there was no social media, no internet, and in fact the full force of ABC News wasn’t even there. Jim McKay and a couple of colleagues were all the world had, and he rose to that occasion.

“If a circumstance remotely like that—and we pray that nothing like that happens—but if something like that should occur, I would be a part of that coverage, but I would not be the only one, as Jim was,” Costas added. “I would be able to rely on Brian Williams, I would be able to rely on Matt Lauer, I would be able to rely on Richard Engel, or David Remnick and Vladimir Pozner. We would have a full group of people there to cover the story. No one will ever find themselves in the position that Jim found himself in in 1972.”

THAT WAS FAST

Security alert in southern Russia as bodies found in bomb-rigged cars

Bizarre killings, for which no motive has yet been determined, heighten security concerns over Sochi Winter Olympics

Russian authorities said on Thursday that security forces had been put on combat alert in the southern Stavropol region after the discovery of six bodies with gunshot wounds in four different cars, three of which were rigged with explosives.

Only one of the bombs went off and no one was hurt. But the killings are further heightening security concerns ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, which also lies near the Caucasus region, where an Islamic insurgency is simmering.

Russia has already tightened security before next month's Games, on which President Vladimir Putin has staked a lot of political and personal prestige, and is on high alert after suicide bombers killed at least 34 people in separate attacks in the southern city of Volgograd last month.

The corpses were discovered on Wednesday in two separate districts outside the regional capital Stavropol, a gateway to the North Caucasus, where Russia faces an insurgency by Islamist militants who have threatened to try to prevent the Olympics going ahead.

Vladimir Markin, spokesman for Russia's main investigative agency, said in a statement issued on Thursday that Federal Security Service officers had joined the investigation. He said no motive had yet been determined.

Mr Putin said after the Volgograd attacks that he would annihilate all "terrorists" in Russia.

The Winter Olympics open in Sochi on Feb. 7. The Black Sea resort is on the western edge of the Caucasus mountains where the insurgents want to carve out an Islamic state.

The head of Russia's Olympic Committee has said no more can be done to safeguard the Games because every measure possible is already in place.

Russian forces went on combat alert in Sochi on Tuesday and about 37,000 personnel are now in place to provide security at the Games, Russian officials say.

Winter Olympics: Russia arrests five 'terror suspects'

Russian authorities say they have detained five members of a "banned international terrorist organisation" in the restive North Caucusus region. The arrests were made in the town of Nalchik, some 300km (185 miles) east of the Black Sea resort of Sochi, the host of next month's Winter Olympics.
