This article is actually a hit piece on the Bible's reliability. There is no proof to this tablet what so ever. It wasnt even a piece in the British Museum, some guy showed up out of the blue and gave it to Dr Irving Finkel. There is no line of custody for the tablet, just hey look at this, OH M, its 3700 years old.  Cheesy he just made that up. This whole story is BS

Was Noah's Ark round? Scholar says 3,700-year-old clay tablet reveals boat was a coracle made out of reeds and bitumen

Dr Irving Finkel has translated cuneiform text on an 3,700-old clay tablet

The ancient script details the Mesopotamian story of Noah's Ark hmmm, what happened to Gilgamesh??  Cheesy

The text also contains instructions on how to build an ark to escape a flood

But its describes the craft as being a round 220-ft diameter coracle

The design is very different to the popular imagining of a traditional ship

Noah's Ark is often depicted as a pointy-prowed traditional ship.

But new research suggests it was very different from popular imagining, and was actually a circular craft made out of reeds.

Dr Irving Finkel reveals his ground-breaking discovery into the ancient myth in his new book called In The Ark Before Noah: Decoding The Story Of The Flood.

As an expert in deciphering cuneiform script, Dr Finkel managed to piece together information on  the ark from a 3,700-year-old clay tablet.

His translation of the ancient text throws light on the Mesopotamian story, which became the account in Genesis in the Old Testament, of Noah and the ark that saved his menagerie from the flood waters which drowned every other living thing on earth.

No it didnt. And again, what happened to Gilgamesh? Which you "experts" claimed was the basis for the Ark Story? This story and Gilgamesh dont even line up.

The text describes god speaking to Atram-Hasis, a Sumerian king who is the Noah figure in earlier versions of the ark story.

He says: 'Wall, wall! Reed wall, reed wall! Atram-Hasis, pay heed to my advice, that you may live forever! Destroy your house, build a boat; despise possessions And save life! Draw out the boat that you will built with a circular design; Let its length and breadth be the same.'

The ancient Babylonian text describes the ark as a round 220-ft diameter coracle with walls 20-ft high.

According to the tablet, the ark had two levels and a roof on the top. The craft was divided into sections to divide the various animals into their own sections.

The 60 lines of text, which Dr Finkel describes as a 'detailed construction manual for building an ark', claims the craft was built using ropes and reeds before being smeared with bitumen to make it waterproof.

There are dozens of ancient tablets that have been found which describe the flood story but Finkel, Assistant Keeper of Ancient Mesopotamian script, languages and cultures Department at the British Museum, says this one is the first to describe the vessel's shape.

'In all the images ever made people assumed the ark was, in effect, an ocean-going boat, with a pointed stem and stern for riding the waves – so that is how they portrayed it,' said Finkel.

'But the ark didn't have to go anywhere, it just had to float, and the instructions are for a type of craft which they knew very well. It's still sometimes used in Iran and Iraq today, a type of round coracle which they would have known exactly how to use to transport animals across a river or floods.'

Channel 4 is now planning a documentary based on the reconstruction of the ark following the guidelines on the tablet which dates from about 1850 BC.
That kind of says it all right there. a documentary. And how did they come by that date? 1850? you cant test clay tablets. there is ZERO tests to determine the age of clay. And since the chain of custody is super weak on this.... where is the proof its not a fake?

The artefact was discovered in the Middle East by Leonard Simmons, who indulged his passion for history while serving in the RAF from 1945 to 1948. The relic was passed to his son Douglas, who took it to Dr Finkel to translate.
So there is really no true chain of custody as to where this came from? No proof as to its true origins. Just a clay tablet some says his dad had in his possession, thats it.  Roll Eyes come on man...

Yeah, definitely a hit piece. But then it's the daily mail.

All these claims of earlier mentions of a flood I believe just lends credibility to the bible. Think about it, for MANY years after the flood, as the population grew, knowledge of the flood would be common, and would spread with the people as they spread out and started different communities, most of which ended up not being Hebrews or Jews, but turned to other gods, and thus they developed their own stories to justify their existence and try to gain credibility. So it stands to reason they had to develop their own explanations for the flood, Noah and who he was, etc., seeing they departed from following the Hebrew God. On the contrary, I see those tablets, the Gilgamesh stone, and even the variations found in the false gospels of the Gnostics as part of the vast evidence that the flood in fact did happen, just as so many different cultures say it did. The details aren't that important initially, because the admitting by so many different cultures that a flood happened I think is enough.

Nonsense Cheesy just read the Bible Dr Irving Finkel

Genesis 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.
16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

PAGAN FLOOD MYTHS: CUBE ARKS, ROUND ARKS, AND COWERING GODS
(Friday Church News Notes, January 31, 2014, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) -

Ever since the discovery of the Babylonian Gilgamish Epic in the 19th century, skeptics have attempted to use ancient pagan flood accounts to discredit the Bible. Yet like every other attempt to disprove Scripture, this one is found to have feet of clay.

The first Gilgamish tablet was found in the 1850s by Henry Layard in the ruins of Nineveh and translated in 1872 by George Smith at the British Museum. It purports to be the account that Utnapishtim told Gilgamesh of how he survived the flood and gained eternal life. Several versions of the story have since been discovered. In contrast to the Bible's majestic account, the Gilgamesh Epic is a ridiculous pagan myth on its very face. Its pagan gods are weak, competitive, and deceptive. Just as ridiculous, the Gilgamesh ark is a cube 200 feet square, which would have been incredibly unstable even on a calm sea!

More recently, Irving Finkel of the British Museum has translated another ancient pagan flood account, and this one describes a circular ark as large as a football field made of a wood frame walled in with ROPE. Now that would be a stable ship for an ocean voyage through the worst weather this world has ever seen! Finkel observes that there were circular boats known as coracles that were used on rivers, which is true, but a river craft is not an ocean-going craft, to say the least. By contrast, the ark described in Genesis was 450 feet long by 75 feet wide by 30 feet high, similar to the proportion of modern sea-going vessels such as oil tankers and cargo containers.

Finkel's tablet is of unknown origin or "provenance." He got it from "a man whose father acquired it in the Middle East after World War II" ("British Museum: Prototype of Noah's Ark Was Round," The Times of Israel, Jan. 24, 2014). Thus no one knows where it came from, who wrote it, or when it was written. Finkel's claim that it is 4,000 years old is a mere guess. Yet this tablet and its silly story, with no solid history older than World War II, is used in an attempt to overthrow the Old Testament which was attested by Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as divinely inspired. Don't be deceived by willfully blind skeptics. The British Museum has been proven wrong many times (e.g., the Piltdown Man hoax), but the Bible has never been proven wrong. "Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts" (2 Pet. 3:3).

As I've said before, I think those non-biblical accounts of a flood lend credibility to the biblical truth of the flood. Of course they spin the story to suit their own beliefs and gods because they didn't believe in the Hebrew God, but that wouldn't make the fact the flood happened any less true.

Pagan Flood Myths: Cube Arks, Round Arks, and Cowering Gods
FROM EMAIL

Ever since the discovery of the Babylonian Gilgamish Epic in the 19th century, skeptics have attempted to use ancient pagan flood accounts to discredit the Bible. Yet like every other attempt to disprove Scripture, this one is found to have feet of clay.

The first Gilgamish tablet was found in the 1850s by Henry Layard in the ruins of Nineveh and translated in 1872 by George Smith at the British Museum. It purports to be the account that Utnapishtim told Gilgamesh of how he survived the flood and gained immortality. Several versions of the story have since been discovered.

In contrast to the Bible’s majestic account, the Gilgamesh Epic is a ridiculous pagan myth on its very face.

The Gilgamesh ark is A CUBE 200 feet square, which would have been incredibly unstable even on a calm sea!

More recently, Irving Finkel of the British Museum translated another ancient Mesopotamian flood account (“British Museum: Prototype of Noah’s Ark Was Round,” The Times of Israel, Jan. 24, 2014). This tablet describes A CIRCULAR ARK as large as a football field made of a wood frame walled in with ROPE and open to the elements. Now, that would be a great ship for an ocean voyage through the worst weather this world has ever seen!

Finkel observes that there were circular boats known as coracles that were used on rivers. This is true, but a river craft is not an ocean-going craft!

By contrast, the ark described in Genesis was 450 feet long by 75 feet wide by 30 feet high, similar to the proportion of modern sea-going vessels such as oil tankers and cargo containers.

(Finkel’s tablet is of unknown origin or “provenance.” He got it from “a man whose father acquired it in the Middle East after World War II.” Thus no one knows where it came from, who wrote it, or when it was written. Yet this tablet and its silly story, with no solid history older than the mid-20th century, is a major international news item in the most recent attempt to overthrow the Old Testament. This sin-cursed world will accept the testimony of a silly Babylonian fable over that of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who attested that the Bible is divinely inspired.)

Don’t be deceived by willfully blind skeptics. The British Museum has a peerless collection of artifacts, and I have spent many days exploring its treasures on multiple trips to England, but its interpretation of those artifacts can be misguided and prejudiced. The Museum has been proven wrong many times (e.g., the Piltdown Man hoax), but the Bible has never been proven wrong.

“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts” (2 Pet. 3:3).

The God revealed in the Bible is nothing like the foolish gods of pagan mythology. The gods of the Gilgamesh myth are spiteful, immoral, selfish, petty, competitive, fickle, impatient, weak, cowardly, and deceitful. The chief god Ea instructs Utnapishtim to lie to his fellow men by giving them the impression that the gods are going to bless them instead of destroy them. When the storm comes, the gods are so frightened that they flee to heaven and cower like dogs, crouching outside the door of the god Anu, and the goddess Ishtar shrieks like a woman in childbirth. After the flood, the god Enlil is furious because some of the men escaped destruction.

By contrast, the Creator God of Scripture is almighty, all-wise, holy, just, compassionate, merciful, longsuffering. He is the same yesterday and today. He speaks only truth. His promises are irrevocable. He is man’s lawgiver and judge, and as Creator He has every right to be man’s judge. But He is also the Saviour. He Himself purchased salvation for sinners by His own suffering on the cross, and He wants all men to be saved.

The Gilgamesh Epic is mainly about Gilgamesh’s search for immortality. He sought for it by every means, but it eluded him.

The Bible is also about man’s search for immortality, and it, too, says that man cannot find immortality through his own efforts. Happily, the story doesn’t end there. The Bible tell us that salvation was purchased by God for man and is offered to man as a gift of His grace. Jesus Christ rose from the dead to prove that this is no pagan myth.

“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy” (Psalm 103:Cool.

“For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time” (1 Timothy 2:3-6).

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Man’s unbelief does not change the truth of the Bible. Even if the entire world disbelieved, it would change nothing. In fact, the widespread unbelief in our day is evidence that the Bible is true. Jesus Christ warned that His return will be preceded by the same type of conditions that existed before Noah’s Flood.

“And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all” (Luke 17:26-27).
