O'Reilly buys Obama propaganda on Syria

Bill O'Reilly objects to "bloviating," which I think means giving opinions not based on fact. So what should we make of his claim that "I believe there is overwhelming evidence that the Syrian tyrant Assad did gas civilians, including children." Where is the "overwhelming evidence?"

One day earlier, O'Reilly had claimed, "The evidence is strong that Assad violated the Geneva Convention by using poison gas to kill civilians."

So in the course of one day, the evidence had gone from "strong" to "overwhelming." On what basis did this occur? O'Reilly doesn't say.

I submit that O'Reilly is engaged in bloviating.

O'Reilly, who is about to begin celebrating his 18th year on the air as the host of the most popular Fox News program, is doing tremendous damage to the notion that he can be relied upon for "fair and balanced" coverage of the major issues of the day.

This is far more serious than an error O'Reilly made when he came under fire for falsely claiming that no Republicans were invited to the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s March on Washington. "The mistake? Entirely on me," O'Reilly said.

In the case of going to war, a far more serious matter than talking about invitations to a civil rights event, O'Reilly makes claims that parrot Obama's talking points, but he offers no evidence to substantiate them.

On this issue, O'Reilly should rename his "Talking Points Memo" the "Obama Talking Points Memo." He is one of the best allies that Obama has going for him as he attempts to persuade conservatives in the House to vote for war.

Let us recall that the Obama Administration, in its 4-page document that is the basis for war with Syria, claims to have "high confidence" that chemicals were used by the Assad regime. It says the evidence "indicates" chemicals were used.

O'Reilly goes further than that, calling it "overwhelming."

Beyond these unsubstantiated claims, there are suggestions of an intercepted communication which somehow proves that the Assad regime carried out the attack. But investigative journalist Kenneth Timmerman reports in The Daily Caller that "the original communication" shows "just the opposite" of what is being claimed – that the regime was surprised by the attack and acted to make sure its troops did not use the weapons. Not only has the Obama Administration "selectively used intelligence to justify military strikes on Syria," but the report pointing to the Assad regime as being the source of the chemical attack has been "doctored," said Timmerman.

Although The Daily Caller is a conservative publication and Timmerman is a conservative journalist, liberal Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, brought this report to the attention of Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel during the House hearing on the war resolution.

"There's been a report in the media that the administration has mischaracterized post-attack Syrian military communications and that these communications actually express surprise about the attack," Grayson said. "This is a very serious charge. Can you please release the original transcripts so that the American people can make their own judgment about that important issue?"

Hagel said the transcripts were "probably classified" and couldn't be released.

Asked about these transcripts, Grayson told the left-wing Democracy Now! radio and TV show: "...in fact, as far as I can tell, not a single member of Congress has actually seen the underlying document. What's been provided to us so far is a 4-page unclassified document and, if we bother to go down to the bowels of the congressional facility here, a 12-page classified document. But that classified document cites 300 underlying intelligence reports, none of which have been released to any member of Congress, despite the fact that we all have classified clearance..."

However, Bill O'Reilly insists that "we now have many conservative people willing to give Assad a pass because they don't trust President Obama."

But even members of Obama's liberal base have their doubts.

O'Reilly's comments are a classic case of bloviating that borders on deliberate misinformation. Conservatives are not willing to give Assad a pass; they are simply demanding to see the evidence before giving Obama the authority to go to war.

To use another example, the same 4-page document for war is quite specific on the number of people who died from the chemical attack – 1,429. "Over 1,400 people were gassed," Obama said at his Friday news conference. But where did this number come from?

Once again, my adversaries at the Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) group have stepped up to the plate, noting that the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an organization that monitors war casualties, said it has confirmed 502 deaths. Quoting from an Associated Press account, Peter Hart of FAIR reports that Rami Abdel-Rahman, the head of the organization, said he was not contacted by U.S. officials about his organization's efforts to collect information about the death toll and that the U.S. figure could be "propaganda."

It is clear in this case that FAIR represents the opinions of liberals who are not prepared to roll over for Obama and do what the White House dictates.

The media are also starting to wake up. McClatchy news service points out that death tolls released by Britain (more than 350) and France (281) were far lower than that offered by Obama.

On Saturday, in Washington, D.C., outside the White House, various Christian organizations protested Obama's proposed war on Syria in part because they don't think the evidence is conclusive. "While the loss of life due to the recent use of chemical weapons in Syria is mourned, there are conflicting reports as to whether rebel groups or the Assad regime used them," they point out.

The coalition of groups behind Saturday's rally includes the Coptic Solidarity International, the World Maronite Union, and the Middle East Christian Committee, as well as several Middle East Christian organizations. They "unequivocally oppose a U.S. military intervention in Syria without a strategy to crumble the regime and defeat the Jihadists at the same time."

One purpose of Obama's proposed military intervention is to deter chemical attacks. Of course, it will take much more than missile strikes to actually locate and remove those chemical weapons. A British paper, The Daily Mail, reports that a secret Pentagon report says 75,000 troops are needed to secure them.

During the Senate hearings on going to war, Secretary of State John Kerry did not rule out troops in Syria for that purpose, although he said he was just "thinking out loud."

O'Reilly seems to be thinking out loud as well, without regard to the facts of the case. For some reason, perhaps to curry favor with the Obama White House and demonstrate his independence from conservatives, he has abandoned critical thinking about this war policy.

Although "The O'Reilly Factor" has been the highest-rated cable news show on television, his bloviating on the road to war in Syria can only further undermine his credibility. Those who want "fair and balanced" and accurate information should turn elsewhere.

Bill Ayers turns against Obama on Syria
9/8/13

NEW YORK – Leftist political activist and University of Chicago professor Bill Ayers has turned on Barack Obama, characterizing the president’s determination to launch a military attack on the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria as a “dumb war.”

In a series of posts on his Internet website over the past few days, Ayers has come out swinging, attacking the presidential candidate he backed in 2004 for trying to justify a U.S. strike on Syria.

In what appears to be satire aimed at mocking President Obama, Ayers posted Sunday, Sept. 8, a diatribe suggesting Assad has already authorized launch missile strikes against the United States.

Ayers wrote: “President Assad of Syria announced yesterday that he had authorized limited missile strikes against the United States of America. ‘The United States has consistently violated international law and civilized standards of behavior,’ he said. ‘It has gathered the greatest arsenal of weapons of mass destruction ever assembled, and it is in fact the only country that has ever used nuclear weapons. It has unleashed drone strikes against at least seven other nations, murdering thousands – it has even used drones to kill its own people. And the U.S. has routinely employed torture, a practice that has been condemned and outlawed for decades – it has even tortured its own citizens” [italics in original].

The giveaway that the piece is intended at biting humor is Ayers’ next paragraph, in which he mocks the language Obama has used to explain the planned military strike is limited in nature, language Secretary of State John Kerry seconded in his testimony before Congress last week.

Ayers wrote: “[Assad] explained that Syria had no territorial ambitions, that there would be no Syrian boots on the ground, and that his goals did not include regime change.”

In a post on Aug. 31, Ayers harkened back to speech Obama gave in Chicago opposing the Iraq war in 2002.

Ayers wrote: “‘I don’t oppose all wars,’ said State Senator Barack Obama from the speaker’s platform at an antiwar rally in downtown Chicago in October 2002. ‘What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war.’

“Dumb and rash,” Ayers continued, “that pretty much sums up the threatened U.S. bombing of Syria.”

Russia: Syria strikes would cause 'outburst of terror'

Russia on Monday warned military strikes on Syria risked causing an "outburst of terrorism" in the region at a time when the Damascus regime is still ready for talks to end the conflict.

"All the more, politicians share our estimation that a military solution will lead to an outburst of terrorism both in Syria and in neighbouring countries," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after talks with Syrian counterpart Walid al-Muallem.

Lavrov also warned strikes would create even more refugees and added Russia "cannot not be worried by the fate of Russians living in Syria whose health and life might be put at risk."

"The possibility for a political solution remains," Lavrov said, emphasising that his Syrian counterpart has assured him at the talks in Moscow that Damascus was still "ready for peace talks".

Russia and the United States agreed in May to organise a peace conference in Geneva bringing all the sides to the negotiating table but the idea is far from materialising amid tensions between Moscow and Washington.

"We are truly ready to take part in the Geneva conference without preconditions," said Muallem, who earlier thanked Russia for its support as Syria's top ally.

"We are also ready for dialogue with all political forces who favour reestablishing peace in our country," Muallem added.

But he warned that the position would change if military strikes took place.

Lavrov reaffirmed his belief that military strikes on Syria could wreck the chances of holding the peace conference.

"Most specialists believe that if the strikes happen the chances of holding the conference would be undermined," he said.

Lavrov revealed that UN-Arab League Syria envoy Lakhdar Brahimi had told him on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Saint Petersburg last week that he shared this view.

Assad Tells Charlie Rose There is No Evidence He is Responsible for Gas Attack, in Rare TV Interview

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad reportedly said on Sunday there is no evidence showing he is directly responsible for last month’s chemical weapons attack on the  Damascus suburbs.

“He basically said here has been no evidence that I used chemical weapons against my own people,” Charlie Rose said a defiant Assad told him during an interview held on Sunday at the Presidential Palace.

The interview has yet to air (it will be broadcasted Monday night on PBS), but Rose previewed the highlights in a phone conversation with “Face the Nation” host Bob Schieffer on Sunday.

f in fact the administration has evidence then they should show that evidence and make their case,” Rose said Assad added.

“He suggested as he has before that perhaps the rebels had something to do with it,” Rose said.

As TheBlaze reported earlier today, President Barack Obama has failed to provide evidence to the public that shows Assad, or a member of his inner circle, ordered the gas attack that took place last month.

“While U.S. officials say Assad is responsible for the chemical weapons strike even if he did not directly order it, they have not been able to fully describe a chain of command for the August 21 attack in the Ghouta area east of the Syrian capital,” Reuters said in an article published Saturday.

The Obama administration, however, has maintained their position that the Assad regime undoubtedly used sarin gas against their own people.

In the interview, Assad also reportedly said he is “prepared” for a strike and warned of “retaliation” if the U.S. strikes Syria.

Some see biblical visions of doom in Syria trouble

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The deadly violence percolating half a world away in Syria and the warnings of a possible U.S. attack have some people not only looking ahead to what might happen in the coming days — but also looking backward into ancient, apocalyptic prophecies in the pages of the Old Testament.

In recent weeks, some dire prophecies have turned up on websites, in book stores, as the subject of Bible studies and in sermons by some Christians and others who see a link between the old passages and modern-day events in Egypt, Libya and Syria.

"Behold, Damascus is about to be removed from being a city, and will become a fallen ruin," reads Isaiah 17, a passage some Christians say they believe details a horrific event that leaves the city uninhabitable and leads to worldwide tribulation and the second coming of Christ.

Damascus is the Syrian capital and one of the world's oldest cities.

Another passage in Isaiah 19 deals with civil war in Egypt and the rise of a "fierce king."

Talk of those prophecies has intensified as President Barack Obama considers a U.S. military strike on Syria in response to what Washington says is evidence that the Syrian leadership used chemical weapons against its own people. In turn, Syria vows to retaliate against neighboring Israel if the U.S. strikes.

"The prophecies are not new to our group because we do (Bible) studies every Friday night. We have looked at that prophecy, but one of the things I try not to do is make a big assumption. That can be dangerous," said Pastor Gary Cristofaro of the First Assembly of God in Melbourne. "We try to find balance by immersing ourselves in prophecy rather than being affected by it."

"The situation in Syria as it relates to scripture could be something that we're witnessing, but we should be cautious. What prophecy really is about is the faithfulness of God's word.''

Prophecy has long played a role in the formation of American faith and, even, politics.

A number of congregations including the Seventh-day Adventists and the Jehovah's Witnesses can trace their roots to the "Great Disappointment" of 1844, a year when a preacher named William Miller moved thousands of Christians to give away their possessions with prophecies detailing what he thought would be the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Millions of Americans also listened as Herbert W. Armstrong, a warbled-voice minister belted out dire prophecies of famine, war and pestilence in the late 1930s – during the Dust Bowl drought and just before the onset of World War II. President Harry Truman, an avid student of the Bible and its prophecies regarding the return of Jews to the Holy Land, was the first world leader to recognize Israel in 1948, a moment some Christians believe began a new prophetic era for events in the Middle East.

Tom Lombardo, a San Franscico-based author and researcher of end time beliefs, believes that the Syrian prophecy is the latest example of some Christians turning to ancient biblical writings to make sense of a modern, complex world.

"Interpreting events doesn't lead to an understanding of what's going on. I believe it actually clouds the understanding," said Lombardo, whose novel American Underground touches on religious themes, political divisions and geopolitical conflict.

Lombardo said followers of prophecy tend to look at world events and search through biblical prophecies for what he calls clues on the timing of the events. "You have some prophecy teachers that argue that the tribulation has begun now. So every time something happens, it has to fit into the narrative," he said.

Christian bookstores such as Family Christian Ministries in West Melbourne report that book sales of prophecy-themed works by charismatic minister Perry Stone, Pastor John Hagee and novelists such as Joel Rosenberg have increased in recent weeks since tension in Syria and Egypt escalated.

"We sold a lot of Perry Stone books, and he's really good with the end times. A lot of our customers say their churches are doing something on prophecy," said Kaylee Snodgrass, assistant manager at Family Christian Ministries.

Some, though, like Pastor Ralph Nygard of Eau Gallie First Baptist Church in Melbourne, urge caution about any speculation and say the prophecies of the bible must be seen in their historical context.

"All I've been teaching recently has been the Book of Revelation and sharing information about the time in which it was written," Nygard said.

"What you have to decide is whether the prophet Isaiah was dealing with the ancient nation of Israel or foretelling the future. You can have a dualistic approach and see the way it was written and the time," and what it may mean for the future, he said.

John Kerry gives Syria week to surrender chemical weapons or face attack
US secretary of state has said that President Bashar al-Assad has one week to hand over his entire stock of chemical weapons to avoid a military attack, but said he had no expectation that the Syrian leader would comply.

Assad says his friends will hit US and allies if struck
Bashar Assad on Sunday warned America and its allies to expect multiple forms of retaliation, including a chemical attack, if the US goes ahead with a military strike on Syria, in remarks published Monday by CBS News. Assad, speaking to Charlie Rose in a Damascus interview, said Syria was “not the only player in the region” and, if an attack occurs, the US and allies in return “should expect everything. Not necessarily from the government.”

http://news.yahoo.com/flow-refugees-italy-grows-syria-strikes-loom-054925653.html
Flow of refugees to Italy grows as Syria strikes loom
9/9/13

As the threat of US-led strikes on Syria looms large, Italy is preparing for the dramatic rise in refugee landings on its shores to increase even further.

Thousands of Syrians have arrived so far this year in a markedly different type of influx to landings seen since the start of the Arab Spring revolts in 2011.

Scores or even hundreds more arrive almost daily, in what officials say has created an "emergency" in Sicily.

They are usually better off and better connected than the thousands of Eritreans and Somalians who also come and their final destination is Sweden, not Italy.

"They have money and are well-dressed, carrying tablets," said Carla Trommino, a local lawyer in Syracuse in Sicily where most of the Syrians have arrived.

"They try to avoid identification by the authorities because they want to go to Sweden and not end up in the system of Italian refugee centres," she said.

Their Mediterranean journeys also begin in Egypt or Turkey, much farther afield than Libya or Tunisia where many recent asylum-seekers had started from.

"We often see relatives waiting with cars on the dock," said Trommino, who is also a local representative for the immigrant rights group ASGI.

"They stay one or two days and then escape," she added.

Sweden this month became the first European Union country to announce it will give asylum and permanent resident status to all Syrian refugees who apply.

Around 1,300 Syrians landed in Syracuse in August alone, compared to 646 landing in July, officials said.

"There has been a real intensification. We have had to call in reinforcements," Antonio Spampinato, the local border guard commander for Syracuse, told AFP.

Entire families, unaccompanied children and pregnant women have been among those landing, fleeing the two-year civil war in hope of a better life in Europe.

"I do expect the Syrian crisis can lead to the worsening of the refugee problem," Italy's Prime Minister Enrico Letta said earlier this month.

Interior Minister Angelino Alfano last week visited Syracuse and declared the refugee influx had become an "emergency" in Sicily -- a part of Italy that has already been badly hit by a painful recession.

He said Italy was tripling bed spaces in refugee centres to 16,000 in expectation of more arrivals and would push for a change in European asylum rules to facilitate family reunions -- which would make it easier for Syrians to leave Italy for northern Europe.

"This region is unprepared. There aren't enough bed spaces and the refugee centres that are being used right now are informal ones," Trommino said.

There have often been emotional scenes in Syracuse in recent weeks, with relatives embracing in the port after receiving word ahead of time about the arrivals.

One Syrian woman gave birth during an eight-day voyage on a boat carrying 354 other refugees, while another died as she crossed with her husband and two children.

The woman was a nurse in Damascus and her husband gave his permission for the donor use of her liver and kidneys, which saved three Italian patients.

Several Syrians arriving have had to be hospitalised with dehydration in the hot summer sun, sometimes airlifted by helicopter directly from their boats.

There have also been tensions: for example, when two Syrian men were unjustly accused by others on the boat of being crew members just because they had tried to defend their children's water rations in the crossing.

Under Italian law, crew members are arrested and deported since aiding illegal immigration is a crime.

Syrians say they pay around $3,000-$4,000 (2,275-3,000 euros) for adults and $1,500 for children for the trip.

Spampinato said people smugglers had come up with a "lucrative" system to maximise their intake by taking large numbers of asylum-seekers across on "mother ships" -- large fishing boats or cargo vessels.

Before reaching Italian national waters, they are then transferred to smaller vessels to be taken to shore.

"We identify the mother ships but we cannot intervene because they are in international waters," he said.

Similar smuggler routes from the eastern Mediterranean are used for the import of far more sinister cargo.

On Friday, a police patrol off Sicily arrested nine Egyptian and Syrian crew members, plucking them from the sea after they set fire to their own ship, an 85-metre (279-foot) cargo vessel laden with drugs.

FWIW, doesn't surprise me if ALL of these world leaders are conspiring together(as pretty much the Vatican runs the kings of the earth) - could see a scenario where America strikes Syria, then a false flag operation happens in this country, and Syria would be to blame for it.

And yes, if Assad is Public Enemy #1, what in the world is he doing giving interviews to USA media sources? Roll Eyes

I see us hitting them, and then God allowing us to be hit back hard. I feel that we are on a precipice here, and about to fall, and fall hard. There has to be a reason why NUKE survival has been being pushed for a while now. I see an East Coast city disappear here soon.

And don't forget about that "Blackjack" cartoon the London Telegraph put out 4 years ago(and PPF and other "truther" forums started buzzing about that year).

Russia proposes putting Syria chemical arms under global control

Russia said on Monday it would urge Syria to put its chemical weapons arsenal under international control if this would avert military strikes.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who called a news conference to announce the proposal, said he had already conveyed the idea to Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem at talks in Moscow and that Russia expected "a quick and, I hope, a positive answer."

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said earlier on Monday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could avoid a U.S. strike by surrendering all his chemical weapons within a week, but immediately made clear he was not making a serious offer.

Again, she gives reasons similar to others that "oppose" it...

In a statement on Monday, the freshman lawmaker is pressing for a diplomatic or alternative approach to the crisis. Heitkamp said the United States should not act unilaterally and needs other nations to prevent the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Heitkamp and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who also opposes the use of U.S. military force, have been working on an alternative that would give Syrian President Bashar Assad 45 days to sign onto an international ban on chemical weapons.

Talk about these people telegraphing their punches...

Biden On Romney In 2012: “Ready To Go To War” With Syria

He offered no specifics. Assad “will go.”

9/5/13

During the presidential election last year Vice President Joe Biden attacked Mitt Romney for being “ready to go to war” in Syria. He offered no specifics.

“He said it was a mistake to set an end date for our warriors in Afghanistan and bring them home. He implies by the speech that he’s ready to go to war in Syria and Iran,” Biden said Sept. 2, 2012 speaking in York, Pennsylvania.

“He wants to move from cooperation to confrontation with Putin’s Russia. And these guys say the president’s out of touch? Out of touch? Swiss bank account, untold millions in the Cayman Islands. Who’s out of touch, man?”

Biden more clearly defined his own Syria position in his vice presidential debate with Rep. Paul Ryan. He was asked why the need to intervene in Syria was not the same as in Libya where it was justified to prevent further massacres. (At that the time the death toll in Syria was 30,000. It has now passed 100,000 deaths.)

“Different country. It’s a different country,” Biden said. “It is five times as large geographically, it has one-fifth the population, that is Libya, one-fifth the population, five times as large geographically. It’s in a part of the world where they’re not going to see whatever would come from that war. It seep into a regional war.”

“You’re in a country that is heavily populated in the midst of the most dangerous area in the world. And, in fact, if in fact it blows up and the wrong people gain control, it’s going to have impact on the entire region causing potentially regional wars,” Biden added.

Biden said the Obama Administration was working with allies in the region to identify people to takeover in the “when” Assad fell.

“We are working hand and glove with the Turks, with the Jordanians, with the Saudis, and with all the people in the region attempting to identify the people who deserve the help so that when Assad goes — and he — there will be a legitimate government that follows on, not an Al Qaida-sponsored government that follows on.”

Ryan and Biden said they agreed upon the Obama Administration’s “red line” against chemical weapons.
